edTPA Lesson Plan Template-Autumn Mathis

Central Focus:

Subject: Second Grade-Reading: Main Idea and

Key Details

The purpose of this lesson is for students to identify the

main idea and key details of a piece of nonfiction
literature, including the focus of the important
paragraphs. The students will use the graphic organizer
to display the main idea and key details. This lesson will
serve as further practice for identifying the main idea
and key details within passages. The main idea and the
key details provide readers with the topic of the
passages.

Essential Standard/Common Core Objective:

Students will also need to know how to identify the main idea and the key details of a passage prior to this
lesson. Additionally, students should know and understand the 5 Ws (Who, What, When, Where, Why) and
how to use those questions to identify the main idea and key details of a passage.

Activity
1. Focus and Review

Description
Boys and girls, this week you all have been working on finding the
main idea and key details of different passages. Who can remind us
what main idea means? The teacher will call on a student to answer
the question. The teacher will respond to the student accordingly.
Now, who can remind us what key details mean? The teacher will
call on a student to answer the question. The teacher will respond to
the student accordingly. The teacher will remind students that they

have a task to complete while they are reading the passage. Who can
tell me what we are supposed to do when we come across a key detail
in the passage as were reading? The teacher will call on a student to
answer the question. The student should say, We write a D next to
the key detail. The teacher will respond to the student accordingly.
You all have been working really hard the past few days to find the
main idea and key details of what you have been reading. Today, we
are going to read together about teeth, and we are going to identify the
main idea and three key details of the passage. Then, you are going to
read Statue of Liberty and identify the main idea and key details of
that passage.
Today, we are going to identify the main idea and key details within a
passage about teeth. Then, you are going to identify the main idea and
key details within a passage called Statue of Liberty. At the end of
the lesson, you will have had more practice in finding the main idea
and key details of a piece of non-fiction literature.
The teacher will give every student a copy of the Smile! Show Off
Those Pearly Whites passage. The teacher will also give every
student the corresponding mouth graphic organizer worksheet.
Students will remain at their desks during this part of the lesson. The
teacher will read the passage out loud as the students follow along. As
the students are following along, they should put a D by the key
details within the passage. The teacher will model this first for the
students to know how to properly label the key detail. The teacher will
indicate which details to label with the D during this practice portion
of the lesson so that every key detail is the same between the teacher
and the students. After the passage has been read and the details have
been labeled, the teacher will go over the 5 Ws (Who, What, When,
Where, Why) about the passage. As the students answer these
questions, it should get their minds thinking about the main idea of the
passage. Once the 5 Ws have been answered, the teacher will draw a
graphic organizer on the white board. At this time, the teacher will
also call on groups to come to the rug with their pencils, passages and
mouth graphic organizer worksheets. The biggest box will be labeled
with Main Idea. The teacher will draw three boxes underneath the
Main Idea box, and those will be labeled with Key Details. The
teacher will then identify the main idea of Smile! Show Off Those
Pearly Whites and write the main idea in the corresponding box using
a complete sentence. (The main idea of this passage is that animals
have different teeth that are helpful for different jobs.) The students
should write down what the teacher writes on their mouth graphic
organizer worksheet. After that, the teacher will write a key detail of
the passage in the first smaller box. (A beaver has strong teeth for
gnawing wood.) Again, the students should write down what the
teacher writes on their mouth graphic organizer worksheet.
Lets fill out these other key details boxes together. The teacher
may call on students to give two more details to complete the
worksheet since the details were labeled and decided by the teacher
during the read-aloud. The teacher will write the details in the boxes

using complete sentences. Students should complete their worksheets

with everything that is written on the board. The teacher will ask the
students if they have any questions. The teacher will remind students
that when they are reading Statue of Liberty, they need to label the
key details with D as they are reading. The teacher will also remind
students to write in complete sentences when they are completing
their worksheets on their own. Once students have finished writing
down everything from the board onto their mouth graphic organizer
worksheets, the teacher will give them a copy of the Statue of
Liberty passage and a copy of the Main Idea and Key Details graphic
organizer worksheet. As students receive the worksheets, they will be
dismissed from the rug to go to their seats to complete the assignment.
Students will work independently to complete the Main Idea and Key
Details graphic organizer worksheet. The teacher will walk around
the classroom to make sure students are staying on task and to make
sure students are able to identify the main idea and key details of
Statue of Liberty. If the teacher discovers that five or more students
are struggling with finding the main idea and key details, a small
group will be formed. The small group will provide the students with
further practice with identifying the main idea and key details. The
teacher will then be able to discover what aspect of the lesson the
students are struggling with and provide further teaching. While the
small group is taking place, the other students will continue to
complete the activity.
The assessment for this lesson will be the Main Idea and Key Details
graphic organizer worksheet that the students completed during the
lesson activity. The students must identify and write the main idea
and three key details from the passage using complete sentences to
meet the lessons objective.
As the students complete the Main Idea and Key Details graphic
organizer worksheet, the teacher will make sure they have written
their names and their class numbers on the worksheet. After students
have been checked by the teacher, they will put their worksheets away
in their reading folders. Students may then begin working on the
stories they have been writing during writing workshop. The teacher
will encourage students to think about key details and the main idea as
they are writing their stories for writing workshop.
Approximately 90% of the students achieved mastery as outlined in
the objective. The other 10% required a substantial amount of
scaffolding to meet the criteria. Students exhibited strengths with
identifying three of the most important or key details of the passage,
which lead them to classifying the main idea. Students who did not
achieve mastery and who required assistance, struggled with finding
the key details. Those students frequently picked random sentences
from the passage and labeled those as key details. This also lead to
those students misidentifying the main idea.
Student/Small Group
Modifications/Accommodations

Students who are below grade level may receive

further scaffolding and assistance from the teacher
while reading the Statue of Liberty passage and
while completing the graphic organizer worksheet.
Students who are above grade level may extend the
activity by writing more than three key details that
support the main idea of the passage.

If five or more students are struggling with finding

the main idea and key details from the passage, a
small group will be formed. The small group will
provide the students with further guided practice
with identifying the main idea and key details. The
teacher will then be able to determine what aspect of
the lesson the students are struggling with and
provide further teaching.
