Kenya extends Dadaab closure

The government of Kenya has extended

the deadline for the closure of Dadaab
refugee camp by six months.
Making the announcement on Wednesday Interior cabinet secretary Joseph
Nkaissery said the decision was informed by the current delicate security
situation in Somalia. He also noted that
the United Nations High Commission for
Refugees (UNHCR) requested for time
to repatriate refugees to Somalia.
In an unprecedented move in May this
year, the government announced the decision to repatriate all Somali refugees

residing in the country and subsequent closure of worlds largest refugee complex by
the end of November 2016. But following
the latest pronouncement Dadaab refugee
camp will-if the government adheres to the
timeline- will be shut down at the end of May
2017.
Today I wish to announce that the government of Kenya has accepted the request to
extend the deadline for the completion of repatriation of Somali refugees and eventual
closure of the Dadaab refugee complex by
six months said Nkaissery in a statement.
Nkaissery however noted that the ongoing

voluntary repatriation process at the camp

will go on as planned.
The minister said the government in partnership with UNHCR and the government of
Somalia has rolled out an elaborate repatriation program starting from next month adding that Kenya will carry out the repatriation
process of refugees in a humane, safe and
dignified manner.

Be the drivers of tolerance, Muslims told

Muslims should be at the forefront in cultivating tolerance and promoting better relations with people from other faith backgrounds.
These sentiments were made by Sheikh
Jamaldin Athman, the head of Markaz Nur
Madrasa in Mombasa who emphasized
that relations with non-Muslims should be

The messengers of Allah

People need a divine message to show
them Allahs laws and guide them to the
right path. Indeed, a divine message is
the spirit, light and the very life of the
world, without which the world would
certainly be lifeless and man would be
plunged into the darkness of ignorance
and misguidance?
It is for this reason that Almighty Allah
calls His message a spirit, for there is no
life without a spirit, as the Quran says,
We have thus revealed a Spirit to you
by Our command. You knew neither the
Scripture nor the faith, but We made it a
light, guiding with it whomever We will of
Our servants. You are indeed guiding to
the straight path. (Soorat Ash-Shooraa,
42:52)
Even though the intellect can generally
distinguish between right and wrong, it
cannot possibly comprehend the details
of such a distinction, nor carry out acts of
worship in the right manner without the
dictates of revelation and the divine message.
Therefore, success and happiness can
only be attained by following the guidance of Allahs messengers. Similarly,
no accurate line of demarcation can be
drawn between right and wrong without
following in their footsteps. Thus, whoever rejects the divine message will definitely lead a miserable and wretched life
depending on the extent of their rejection
of it.
It is one of the pillars of faith
Belief in Allahs messengers is one of the
six pillars of eemaan (faith), as the Quran
states, The Messenger believes in that
which has been revealed to him from his
Lord and so do the believers. Each one
believes in Allah and His angels and His
books and His messengers. (Soorat AlBaqarah, 2:285)
This verse makes it abundantly clear
that we must believe in all of Allahs
messengers without making a distinction between any of them. We must not,
therefore, believe in some of them and
reject some others, as did the Jews and
the Christians.
Defining eemaan (faith), the Prophet
peace be upon him also said in this connection, It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers and
the Last Day, and to believe in the divine
decree, both good and bad. (Saheeh
Muslim: 8)
The Meaning of Belief in the Messengers
This means firm belief that Allah I sent
a messenger to every nation and community, calling its members to worship
Allah alone without any partners, that
all Allahs messengers were truthful,
virtuous, trustworthy and rightly-guided
servants who strove hard to guide their
people to the right path and conveyed

Allahs message to them in full, without

concealing, omitting or adding anything
to it. The Quran says, Therefore, the
messengers obligation is no more than
to convey the message clearly. (Soorat
An-Nahl, 16:35)
What Does Belief in the Messengers
Include?
To believe that their message was truly
from Allah and that Allah had sent them
with the same message, namely, to worship Allah alone and to avoid false gods,
as the Quran states, We sent a messenger among every people saying:
Worship Allah and keep clear of all false
gods. (Soorat An-Nahl, 16:36)
Laws may vary as to the dos and donts
of the message with which prophets
were sent to their people, depending on
what laws suited their people best, as
the Quran states, For each [community
to which a Messenger was sent with a
Book] have We appointed a law and a
practice. (Surat Al-Maaidah, 5:48)
To believe in all the Prophets and Messengers. We believe in those Prophets
whom Allah has named, such as Nuh
(Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus) and Muhammad, may
Allahs peace and blessings be upon all
of them. As for those whom He has not
named, we believe in all of them in general. Those who disbelieve the message
of one single prophet is considered to
have disbelieved in all of them.
To believe the authentic reports and accounts of the prophets and their miracles mentioned in the Quran and in the
Prophets traditions, such as the story
of Allahs parting the Red Sea for Musa
Alayhi sallam .
To act according to the dictates of the
law revealed to our Prophet Muhammad
peace be upon him, who was the seal of
the prophets and the best of all of them.
Some Characteristics of the Messengers
They are human, and the only difference
between us and them is that Allah had
chosen them to receive His revelation
and convey His divine message, as the
Quran says, We have only ever sent
before you men to whom We revealed
the message. (Surat Al-Anbiyyaa, 21:7)
Therefore, they have no divine attributes
whatsoever. They are human beings who
attained perfect physical appearance
and enjoyed impeccable moral traits.
They are also the most honourable of
people in lineage and enjoyed sound
judgement and clear, persuasive speech,
which entitled them to assume the responsibility of conveying the divine message and bear the burden of prophethood.
Almighty Allah I has only chosen messengers from among people so that they
can set a good example for them, and so

that people can follow in their footsteps, which

they can possibly do.
Allah has chosen them from among people so
they can convey the divine message to people,
as the Quran states, Say: I am only a human
being like you who has received revelation.
Your god is One God. So let him who hopes to
meet his Lord act rightly and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord. (Surat Al-Kahf,
18:110) It is clear, therefore, that prophethood
cannot be attained as a result of spiritual purity, intelligence or mental logic, for the task of
prophethood can only be determined by divine
will, and Allah I knows best whom to appoint
as His messengers, as the Quran states, Allah knows best upon whom to bestow His message. (Surat Al-Anaam, 6:124)
They are infallible in the sense that they do not
make mistakes when conveying Allahs message to the people and executing what Allah
has revealed to them.
Truthfulness: They are truthful in their words
and deeds, as the Quran states, This is what
the Most promised, and the messengers told
the truth. (Surat Yaa Seen, 36:52)
Patience and Perseverance: They called to Allahs religion, bringing good news and giving
warning, and were subjected to various forms
of harm and hardships, but they patiently bore
all that for the sake of making the word of Allah
reign supreme, as the Quran states, So be
steadfast as the Messengers with firm resolve
were also steadfast. (Soorat Al-Ahqaaf, 46:35)
The Messengers Signs and Miracles
Allah I supported His messengers with a number of signs and miracles to prove their truthfulness and prophethood. A miracle, or mujizah,
is an extraordinary event in the physical world
that surpasses all known human or natural
powers. It is performed by prophets, by Allahs
command, for its credential value, to accredit
them as Allahs true messengers
Examples of miracles include:
Prophet Musa turning the road into a snake
Prophet Jesus informing his people of what
they ate and stored in their houses
The splitting of the moon for Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.

33 and single: Faith and finding love

Im 33-years-old and still single. Well, the still is the lamentation some Muslims in the community add when they describe my
status.
The Muslim culture, not unlike most others, abides by a set of
expectations when it comes to women, marriage and motherhood.
A womans identity is strongly braided with her walking down the
aisle and becoming a mother. Because many women believe that,
by a certain age, their life should follow this path, their decisions
are dictated by this expectation. I confess, I too have been guilty
of this thinking.
In the Muslim community, it is not uncommon for people to ask
girls who have just completed high school with questions like,
So when will we be getting a wedding invitation? Once I turned
30-years-old, the question changed from When are you going to
marry? to Why arent you married yet? As if I have some grand
scheme to avoid marriage at all cost.
The intrusive questions are not limited to women. Ive even been
bluntly asked by suitors, Sajdah, youre in your 30s and never
been married. How come? The implication of this question really
offends me; they might as well be saying, So tell me whats wrong
with you?
I answer by saying there is no perfect age at which to marry, I am
clear on what I am looking for, and I am not willing to settle. I just
have yet to find my mate. My self-assured reply has worked well
for me so far. Still, I am human and sometimes my confidence
cracks. Ever so often, the anxious little voice inside my head pipes
up, Are you sure youre not doing something wrong? You should
be married by now. This nagging internal monologue was at its
strongest right after I finished graduate school. I was 29-years-old
at the time and just knew that now that I had completed my education, marriage would follow at its heels. When it didnt, I felt my
self-assuredness crumble into self-doubt.
Islam values marriage tremendously. It is an act of worship and
highly encouraged. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
said getting married completes half our religion. In other words, a
loving Muslim marriage requires both individuals to show compassion, generosity,
forgiveness,
etc. and when

and wife manage this, they have succeeded in completing half

their religion.
The weight of cultural expectations, my own desire for a husband
and children, and the understanding that marriage is an act of worship all coalesced to create a sense of urgency to find my ideal
mate. It is no wonder that waiting to marry the right person has
tested my faith enormously.
I had many moments when I broke down crying in disappointment
because a potential match didnt work out. There have been other
times when I met someone who I knew in my soul wasnt right for
me, but the thought of letting it go sent me into a panic, so I would
put myself through mental gymnastics in an attempt to convince
myself why I should settle for this person. I tried to quiet a part of
my consciousness that told me to go in the other direction. Thankfully I never succumbed to my anxiety. The thought of settling for
something always originates from a place of fear. And fear is the
very thing that opposes faith.
As I continue on my search for my life partner, the more I discover
the value of remaining patient and trusting that God will bless me
with what I am looking for. I have to relinquish the ego, the arrogance that insists that my plan for myself is better than Gods
path for me. I have to trust that He can make anything possible
because His power and His blessings are limitless. If I were to
settle in marriage, it would not only be because I did not believe
in my own worth, but also because I didnt believe in Gods power
and responsiveness.
I have to let go of cultural beliefs that women are old and washed
up and somehow undesirable if not married by a certain age. I
know my identity as a woman is not defined by marital status and
Ive become convinced that my life at this moment is no way any
less fulfilling or meaningful because Im not married. That time will
come.
As my faith teaches me, I can only trust that this wait is not a
punishment of some sort, but simply my test. I have to continue to
pray to God to send me whats best and guide me in my decisions.
God will not forsake me. I know that my life is evolving just as it
should be, just as God planned it.

On the 8th November 2016, many Americans went to the polling stations to select
the next President of the United States of
America.
The 2016 election year saw a difficult
choice between two candidates: one a
populist businessman demagogue whose
rhetoric and seemingly bigoted policies
have alarmingly resonated with a large portion of (white) European Americans; the
other, an experienced politician with questionable past practices while in political office who will no doubt continue the policies
of the current administration.
As with every election time, the election
campaign generated an implied myth that
the Presidency election was going to result
in a complete and radical change in the direction of the United States.
As news of Trumps election victory came in
on the morning of the 9th November 2016,
there was much wailing and gnashing of
teeth, with many people globally falling to despondency, fear over what comes
next, and dread. Almost equally, there was
jubilation and celebration amongst the
right-wing supporters of Trump, and many
others who voted for him across America,
believing that a new era was coming.
However, like all successful myths, most
of the American people have been misdirected to focus on the specifics of the candidates, while forgetting or not fully realising the true reason for the election and the
important role it plays in the design of the
U.S. system of government.
Change is no Change
First off, both sides seem to forget that the
President of The United States (POTUS)
does not possess absolute power and authority in the U.S. and cannot, of their own

An alternative look at Trump

power, create radical changes.
This has been deliberate in the design of
the United States government. The U.S.
has separate executive (Whitehouse), judiciary (Courts) and legislative (the lower
and upper houses) branches, so that no
one branch can act completely unilaterally.
For example, the POTUS cannot declare
war on another country without the approval of Congress (the US governments lower
house). Likewise, POTUS cannot simply
make up new laws without support from
Congress and the Senate.
Much concern has been drummed up
around Donald Trump. What is being circulated is that, if elected, he would implement
severe policies that would discriminate
against African Americans, Latino Americans and American Muslims. There were
also fears that Trump would implement foreign policies that will result in many Muslim
deaths around the world.
However, the question that few ask is, how
is that different to what has been happening under 8 years of President Obama?
Has a mixed ethnicity European/African
president in office for 8 years prevented
recurring and systematic ethnic discrimination against African Americans in the
U.S.? Despite his pleas after every mass
shooting, was he able to repeal the constitutional right of Americans to buy and own
firearms? Have Latino Americans been
treated better under Obama than under his
predecessor George Bush? Has the government ceased spying on its own people?
No. In fact, in many cases, these problems
have increased.
Why is that? Well the clue is in the name
of the branch of government occupied by
POTUS: The Executive. As the name im-

plies, the role of that branch is to execute

the laws and functions of the U.S. government, not to make new laws or changes, or
even judge people according to the law. In
fact, the POTUS has little ability to change
the policies of Police departments, Homeland security or the NSA. Under President
Obama, Muslims have been thrown off aeroplanes before travel for, well, being visibly
Muslim while flying. Muslim visitors have
been turned away from America either before getting on the plane, or (more cruelly)
after arriving in the U.S. after a long flight
from overseas.
It is common for Muslims to report having
been randomly selected for screening
every time they boarded a flight through the
U.S. Obama has used more drone strikes
and caused more civilians deaths by them
than George Bush. Furthermore, the Muslim world is in greater turmoil now than ever
it was during Bushs time.
Some people cite concerns over the restrictions on Mexicans coming to the U.S., despite the fact that the USA already enacts
one of the strictest immigration policies
amongst any Western country, and there is
already a diligently patrolled border fence
on the U.S. southern border with Mexico.
The only new proposition Trump put forward was to make it bigger and concrete
(which he may abandon as a policy once
he sees the price tag). Political analyst
Arun Kundnani has already pointed out that
everything we fear from Trump is already
happening and on the increase.
Whether Donald Trump won or Hillary Clinton won this election, the reality would have
always been the same: a resounding victory for the continuation of the same system.

Egypt's Mohamed Morsi has death sentence overturned

Egypt's Court of Cassation has overturned
a death sentence against the country's deposed president Mohamed Morsi and ordered a retrial, according to reports.
The country's first democratically elected
president, Morsi was overthrown by a military coup in July 2013 after having served
just one year of a four-year term.
The organisation to which he belonged,
the Muslim Brotherhood, has since been
outlawed. A government crackdown on the
movement, as well as other groups, has resulted in tens of thousands of arrests and
mass trials.
Morsi was tried in an Egyptian court on
several charges, including one of escaping prison during the 2011 uprising against
then-president Hosni Mubarak.
He was also accused of sharing state secrets with foreign powers, including Qatar.
His defence argued that he was merely engaging all foreign entities within the limits
that any head of state would.
Morsi was given several sentences, including life, a 20-year prison term and the
death penalty. He appealed against those

sentences, but has already had the 20year term confirmed by an Appellate Court.
Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have argued that the trials carried
out by the government of Abdel Fattah elSisi, who led the coup against Morsi, have
been political in nature and violated the
rights of thousands of Egyptians.
Mass trials have sentenced hundreds of
Egyptians to death. Rights groups have
also called attention to the prison abuse in
Egypt's detention system.
Morsi himself has in the past abstained
from eating prison food, out of fear for his

NEP counties to lose billions as govt moves to use projected 2009 census figures
Northern counties are set to lose billions of shillings from their budgetary
allocations as the national government
intends to use the projected figures
from the 2009 population census in
allocating funds to the counties rather
than the actual figures that were disputed by the government.
The disputed census results were
for then 8 districts now four counties.
These were Lagdera, Mandera East,
Mandera Central, Mandera West, Wajir East, Turkana North, Turkana South
and Turkana Central districts.
In May this year the Court of Appeal
ruled that the disputed figures would
still stand as the actual figures but at
the same time directed government
agencies such as the Ministry of Planning and Kenya Bureau of Statistics to
use the projected figures rather than
actual census figures of 2009 in respect to the four counties.
The court also directed that the projected figures be published and gazetted.Mandera senator Billow Kerrow
wondered why the same court would
contradict itself by upholding the actual

census figures and at the same time issuing

orders to government agencies to use the projected figures.
He said the Commission of Revenue Allocation has begun the process of using the estimated figures to allocate revenue to the counties in the coming financial year 2017/2018
saying the move would be a big blow to the
three counties.
Billow noted that the three counties of Mandera, Wajir and Garissa are set to lose over
3.5 billion shillings annually. The government now intends to use this ruling to revise
the funds allocated to the three counties for
2017/18 financial year whose budget process
has been brought forward to commence next
week, because of next years elections, he
said.
In February 2012, the then Minister for Planning Wycliffe Oparanya tabled a revised post
census figures in Parliament showing that the
figures in the 8 sub counties were inflated in
the 2009 population count.
The 2009 census figures read that the 8 subcounties had a total population of 2.35 million
but Oparanyas figures placed the figures at
1.3 million people. The state argued that the

eight sub counties had registered abnormal

population growth and hence cancelled the
results.
In May 2016 the three counties together
with the county of Turkana moved to the Supreme Court to challenge the ruling by the
Court of Appeal.
The National Muslim Leaders Forum (NAMLEF), Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims
(SUPKEM) Garissa branch, Consortium
for the Empowerment and Development of
Marginalized Communities (CEDMAC) and
Kenya Muslim Charitable Trust were some
of the organizations that were enjoined in
the appeal.
But six months later, the counties are yet to
make good their intention to challenge the
ruling and Senator Billow has made a passionate appeal to the leaders of the region
to move quickly and lodge the appeal at the
Supreme Court. I urge all of you to apply
pressure on your county bosses to handle
this matter to save these funds! We must
act now, he said.
Delay in the repealing the ruling has been
attributed to the failure by the counties to
meet the legal fees for the lawyers.

Be steadfast in Islam, Muslim inmates advised

Muslim inmates have been urged to remain steadfast in Islam and safeguard
their Islamic faith while inside the incarceration precincts for spiritual nourishment, identity and better life.
This call was made by Jamia Mosque
Imam Sheikh Muhammad Swalihu
who challenged the inmates to strictly adhere and follow the teachings of
Islam while within the prison walls to
enhance on their spirituality and serve
as good role models to other prisoners.
Speaking during the official opening
of the Kamiti Medium Security Prison
mosque last week, Sheikh Swalihu
emphasized on the need for Muslim inmates to remain true to their faith and
uphold the correct teachings emanating from the Qur'an and the traditions
of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon
him to enhance their spiritual affairs
and development.
The Sheikh who was the chief guest at
the event told the prisoners not to despair but look at the brighter side of the
life in prison, positively change their
behavours and engage in constructive
activities to empower themselves for
the good of the society.
He encouraged the inmates to take advantage of the existing education and
training opportunities within the correctional facilities to acquire knowledge
and skills that would better their future
lives after prison.
Sheikh Swalihu commended the governments efforts for appointing full
time Maalims to provide and cater for
the spiritual needs and welfare of Muslim inmates and members of staff in all
the prisons countrywide and for provid-

ing permits to volunteer spiritual caregivers,

saying this has contributed to the reformation
of inmates.
In his remarks the officer in charge of Kamiti
Maximum Prison Henry Kisingu said the government recognizes the importance of spirituality in the reformation of inmates and pledged
more support towards such programmes that
have a positive impact on prisoners The effort and support from the Muslim community
has had a positive impact on the prisoners
and we will work together to ensure that the
spiritual nourishment of prisoners meets it objectives,'' he said.On his part the deputy of-

ficer in charge of Kamiti Medium Security

Prison Shadrack Kinoti urged the prisoner
to utilize the mosque well and uphold the
teachings of Islam and knowledge to better
themselves and others.
The Vice chairman of the Prison Rehabilitation Programme Muhammad Shariff commended Haji Issa a donor who funded the
construction of the mosque at the facility
and called on Muslim inmates to utilize the
newly constructed mosque to improve on
their education and enhance on their spirituality.

A journey across the country from Mombasa to Busia and

Lunga lunga to Kakuma will give you an impression of how
Muslims live in this country. At least in each major town one
can see a main mosque which is an epitome of Islam being
professed in those areas.
It also shows that Islam is one of the major religions in this
country after Christianity. However the issue is when time for
prayers comes and you want to visit the toilets and wudhu
area before the prayers commence. Our observation has
shown that our prayer halls, toilets and wudhu facilities are
not properly maintained.
Generally these are observations that we have noted and
Ummah Foundation has decided that it is time to turn this into
a full-fledged campaign where we encourage all well wishers
and donors to channel their funds in putting into good shape
the already existing mosques that are dilapidating. Some of
the mosques have become historical monuments that time
has eaten into its survival and are at verge of collapse.
The wudhu and toilet facilities that were long built have also
been destroyed with age and they dont have water or are
severely leaking. Some have been declared a no go zone as
they pose a health risk to the users. As much as construction
of a new mosque is very imperative but we should take into
account that repairing an existing mosque to its full potential
and utilization is equally important.
Ummah Foundation with its limited funds has invited applications for rehabilitation and renovation of these mosques
from the sorry state. Last year, we got a request from Soweto
Mosque committee that needed their mosque, classrooms
and toilets to be renovated. Ummah Foundation took the onus
of refurbishing the project and today the place is in a better
situation.
This year Ummah Foundation has refurbished six mosques
around Nairobi and constructed toilets and Wundhu facilities
affiliated to the mosques. This work can also be seen vividly
in Dandora-Maili Saba, GSU barracks mosque, Athi River;
where we renovated the main mosque, constructed two dormitories, four classrooms and a dining hall for the orphanage.
We also renovated the Githurai Mosque that was in bad
shape. Similarly we call upon like minded donors and well
wishers to put this into their working operations as we all embark on this important task of giving our prayer places a new
picture. We know a lot will be required to accomplish this mission but the little one can give towards this will make a big
impact in attaining the change.
