1. This document is an article written by Mark Thomson, a sollicitor on the site of the famous
British newspaper website The guardian . it deals with the role of the popular press in a
case which hit the headlines in Great Britain : the murder of Joanna Yeates and the false
accusations against Chris Jefferies.
2. The victim is Joanna Yeates, a white professional. She was killed over (= during) Christmas.
The first suspect was her landlord Mr Chris Jefferies, a former English teacher. The other
protagonists are the journalists.
3. Mr J was described as being weird , lewd , strange , creepy , angry , odd ,
disturbing , eccentric , a loner and unusual . He was accused of being attracted
by crime and death and also of spying on people. The media made J pass for a lunatic, a
psychopath. As a consequence, the readers were led to think he was the culprit, the
murderer.
4. Mr J did not kill Joanna. Indeed we can read he was released without charge
5. The Sun, the Daily Mirror and the Daily Mail are mentioned in the article. All of them are
tabloids that concentrate on scandals, shocking murders and sensational stories. On the
contrary the article is written by a journalist from The Guardian which is a quality paper, a
serious-minded paper.
6. The author writes that the apparently eccentric suspect led to wholly unbalanced media
reporting. There has been large scale media intrusion into Mr Jefferies'private life and
sustained defamatory attacks on his reputation .And he adds that it is difficult to see how
their attitude and defamatory writings can be justified.
M T is very severe about these papers, he feels that they can't be excused for doing this kind
of reporting and he finds their attitude intolerable. He denounces the behaviour of these
papers. The desire to catch the readers' attention is no excuse for this kind of reporting.
7. It is true that when there's a murder, people are shocked and want to know the culprit. The
press is therefore under pressure to keep the public informed. But this doesn't allow the
journalists to intrude into people's private lives, to ruin their reputation or to find scapegoats.
