Installation Guide

Broad Band Accelerator (BBA)

Multi-Slot Enclosure
Document No. 520R69668E
Revision No A01
October 2015

About
This Installation Guide describes the installation of the Broadband Amplifier (BBA) Multi-Slot
Enclosure (MSE) in the network in an Indoor or Outdoor environment.
The Actelis BBA Multi-Slot Enclosure is a flexible and durable enclosure supporting up to 24 DSL
subscriber lines. It includes an integrated shelf with plug-and-play docking slots for up to 12 BBA
line cards and a dedicated slot for an optional management card*. For smaller amount of
subscriber lines Actelis offers also a smaller, single-slot (2 ports) and two-slot (4 ports),
enclosures.
The BBA Multi-slot enclosure accommodates any of Actelis BBA line cards, extending the delivery
of any VDSL2, ADSL2+, ADSL2 and ADSL services.
Actelis BBA significantly enhances VDSL2, ADSL2+, ADSL2 and ADSL performance (data rate and
service reach) by using advanced signal filtration and amplification. The unit is easily deployed
over legacy copper pairs and can be Line Powered from a POTS switch, consuming only miniscule
power.
The BBA unit is installed between the DSLAM unit and the CPE unit.
The BBA series is compatible with any standards-compliant VDSL2, ADSL2+, ADSL2 and ADSL
DSLAM unit and CPE equipment. No special configuration or adjustments are required for either
the DSLAM or the CPE units.
Remote Management is supported through Remote Management card* capable of remote
management as well as remote feeding of all the cards within the enclosure.
Remote express powering is supported through Express power line card* capable of feeding all
BBA cards within the enclosure.

Miniscule power of <100mW per port consumed from POTS line.

BBA units and Management card are locally powered*

o Less than 7.5W required from -48V nominal (-24V to 60V).

BBA units and management card are remotely power fed*

o Less than 12W required from remote power source.

1.4

Clearance and Ventilation Requirements

No requirements for clearance and ventilation.

1.5

Copper Pair Qualifications

Basic information:
The BBA Multi-slot enclosure connects to the local copper-loop network, typically between the
exchange and the CPEs or between remote cabinets and the CPEs. The system supports the
interconnection of any number of copper pairs up to 24.
Testing and verifying the copper pairs:
Cable pairs must meet standard xDSL test requirements
The Actelis system has been engineered to tolerate less than optimal line conditions, so testing
and verification prior to system installation may not always be necessary. However, you can test
and verify the copper pairs to ensure their quality and integrity prior to systems installation, this
will ensure optimal performance of the Actelis system and DSL service delivery.
* Future option

Page 13

Caution: xDSL equipment will not operate properly if there are load coils or bridge taps
on the copper pairs. All load coils and bridge taps must be removed prior to system initialization.
Planning aid: use the planning aid tool for estimating the performance with BBA in the loop, for
additional information contact techsupport@actelis.com.

Pre-installation Requirements

1.1 Inspecting Shipment and Unpacking

On receipt of the equipment check the packing list to assure complete and accurate shipment of
all listed items. If the shipment is short or irregular, contact Actelis. If the equipment must be
stored for a prolonged period, do so in the equipments original container. If equipment ever
needs to be returned, please use the original packaging if available.
After opening the shipping package, ensure that you have received the ordered Enclosure and the
ordered BBA units and that there is no sign of damage on them. If the equipment has been
damaged in transit, immediately report the extent of damage to the transportation company and
to Actelis.
Each Multi Slot enclosure arrives with the following accessories: two mounting screws, grease for
corrosion prevention on grounding lug and dehumidifier.

Grounding BBA Enclosure

!

Caution: BBA Multi-slot enclosure shall be grounded.

Use the two hole lug at the bottom of the enclosure for units grounding.
1.

Remove 1/2 inch of insulation from one end of the 10-AWG ground wire.

2.

Use provided #12-24 or M6 screw to attach the exposed 10-AWG wire end to the equipment
rack ground.

3.

Route the 10-AWG wire to cable-tie strip on the chassis rear panel. Use a cable tie (or waxed
string) to secure wire to slot on cable-tie strip, see Figure 6 below.

4.

To connect the remaining end of the 10-AWG wire to the Enclosure do the following:

Cut the remaining portion of the wire to the required length and remove 1/2 inch of
insulation from the end of the wire. Bare conductors shall be coated with an
appropriate antioxidant compound before crimp connections are made (cables
supplied by Actelis are tin plated and no additional treatment is required).

Use slot-head screwdriver to loosen terminal lug screw as shown in the following
figure.

Insert the end of the wire into terminal lug, as shown in the following figure.

Tighten terminal lug screw.

Caution: Make sure there are no exposed wires when the procedure is completed.

4.2 Copper Pairs Cable Wiring

4.2.1 Cable Insertion
The BBA Multi-slot Enclosure uses two big glands to seal the enclosure with incoming wiring
cables. Third, smaller, optional gland (different enclosure part number) is for local powering input
and/or for local management option.
The unit does not include copper pairs cable (if required, contact Actelis Customer support for
assistance in specifying the cable), verify that the cable is a minimum of CAT-3 and has the
appropriate safety and environmental specifications. External cable diameter must be between 14
mm to 25 mm (0.551 inch to 0.984 inch) to guaranty enclosures sealing to IP68.
Wiring Procedure:
Release the gland cap as seen in Figure 8; handle the cylindrical gasket with care.
Insert the CO wiring cable (Exchange side) into the left gland and the CPE wiring cable into
the right gland.
The cable shall be inserted into the gland cap and into enclosures Gland as seen in Figure 9.
Tighten the gasket and the cap of the gland to the glands body.

2. Pivot the bar upwards to allow card insertion.
3. The enclosure supports 12 BBA card slots numbered 1 to 12* left to right. Hold the cards in
their handle and insert the required amount of BBA card into their slots, make sure cards
are inserted with components facing left side.
4. The enclosure supports remote management card. Hold the card in his handle and insert it
into MGMT slot, make sure card is inserted with components facing left side.
5. Verify that the cards are fully inserted till the end of the cage.
6. Return the card lock bar into its position and secure it with the two captive screws on lock
bar sides.
7. If primary protection cards are required, continue with Section Primary Protection cards
Installation in section 5.3.
8. Pivot the shelf back to its original position and lock it using the two captive screws on card
cage sides.

Note: BBA auto estimation process may be monitored via BBA Flash unit (refer to BBA Flash
Manual). Auto estimation process monitoring of the BBA if required during installation, should be
perform after completion of BBA power up and unit pivot closing

BBA Power Up

Note: The BBA communicates with the DSLAM and CPE. No action is required after installation.
BBA starts its training process after installation completion if the DSL link is provisioned, i.e.
DSLAM (installed at CO or Cabinet) and CPE units are provisioned and wired to the BBA unit.
Allow 3 to 5 minutes for the BBA to complete the training process prior to testing or checking
performance. The DSLAM and CPE equipment will synchronize several times during the BBA
training process. This is normal and should be ignored until the training period has expired.
BBA card doesnt have on board LED indication, to monitor locally the process of BBAs auto
estimation use BBA Flash unit (refer to BBA Flash Manual) LEDs and BBA View PC application.

Note: before leaving installation site verify that BBA link is up and performs as required.
Use BBA Flash unit and BBA View PC GUI application to modify BBA settings if required (for
example setting of spectral regulations).
