CHRIST THE KING
Thirty-Fourth & Last Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners,
Today we celebrate the Feast of Jesus Christ, as our King. It is the last
Sunday of the Churchs year and what a magnificent way to celebrate!
In our first reading, we see the young man David anointed as King of
Israel. His kingship prefigures the universal kingship of Christ. St Paul in
his letter to the Colossians puts it another way. Jesus is not only the image of the unseen
God, but also the Lord of all creation All things were created through him and for him.
Hence our task to care for all of Gods creation because Christ is at the very heart of all that
God has created.
In the Gospel, we see Jesus reigns from the cross. The crown of thorns he is wearing
is a symbol of suffering yet it is a crown of glory! This is a contradiction by any human
standards. But we know that the cross of death is also the tree of victory.
Today there are wars; betrayals, suffering of all kinds. Jesus knew this and his death
is a sign to us that have overcome the power of sin and death we now continue that
struggle with Jesus at our side in every circumstance of our journey; through good and
bad, Jesus is there with us every step of the way. We need to ponder on this wonderful
mystery of Gods love for us and all his creatures.
ADVENT: We look forward to a new beginning, a new chapter as we begin the
season of Advent next Sunday. We close the chapter of this Liturgical Year and the close of
the Year of Mercy; we pray that we are open to new blessings, challenges and
opportunities to continue the building of Gods Kingdom here on earth.
At our PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL meeting Wednesday last, among the many
topics discussed were: Courtyard a scheme to reach out to young people between 1625 years old. On 2nd December at 7.30pm an Open Meeting is arranged to learn more
about this scheme.
GOLDEN-RUBY ANNIVERSARY: 2017 marks the 90th Anniversary of the founding
of St John Vianney Parish in 1927. The Golden-Ruby Anniversary can be a time of blessing
and exciting activities and we need to celebrate in a fitting manner to thank God for 90
years of blessings. To plan how best we can celebrate there is an Open Meeting on
Monday 5th December to do some appropriate planning.
HEALTH & SAFETY FOR ALL: Last Sunday an incident occurred. On reviewing the
CCTV of this incident it was noted that a number of children were playing in the car park.
This has highlighted the risks especially concerning children.
SURGERY HOURS: As a Parish Staff, we try to be available to parishioners as much
as possible. We thought by setting aside specific times it may be helpful to you. We will
see how this experiment works out! (See inside)
Thats all for now, God bless. Fr Joe
