SUMMARY

PAKISTAN ZINDABAD
On 7th August, 1947, Quaid Azam, the originator and first Governor
General of the new state landed at Mauripur airport, Karachi. There a large crowd
assembled to welcome him. As he appeared, all the people roared with one voice
Pakistan Zindabad!
Quaid AZam passed through these cries without giving any sign of his
feelings. Perhaps he was lost in thoughts of those people killed while trying to reach
their new homeland.
Though tired, the Quaid-e-Azam was contented that he had almost
fulfilled his work. Indian Muslims were once defeated group, owing to his potent
leadership, they became free people and were converted into fifth largest nation of
the world with 70 million population. After independence, Quaid-e- Azam declared
that all the people would enjoy complete religious freedom and social equality.
In March 1940, the Muslim league took decision of partition of India
into two states and this decision was called Pakistan Resolution by Indian
newspapers. The word Pakistan was coined by a Cambridge student Chaudhry
Rehmat Ali in 1933, which means land of Paks or spiritually pure. The letters of
word Pakistan had been derived from initials of various Muslim states of India and
Asia.That is Punjab, Afghania (NWFF),Kashmir,Iran,Sindh,Tukharistan,Afghanistan
and Baluchistan. When Quaid was unable to travel and deliver speeches to
meetings, he spent most of his time at desk writing for workers. He started a
newspaper Dawn, which was welcomed by Muslims for it was the first Muslim
newspaper.
The Quaid-e-Azam and Gandhi came close to each other to reach an
agreement.Quaid wanted to divide India into two states whereas Gandhi said that it
would mean ruin for India. So talks failed to bring about an agreement. After
second world war, when further discussions bore no fruit. Britian decided to leave
India by June 1948.Lord Mountbatten was sent as the last viceroy to India in
March,1947 for the ultimate partition of India. Mountbatten declared that
provinces must decide at once whether they wished to join Pakistan or India
because British would leave by August 15,1947. Sindh, Baluchistan,NWFP,Punjab,
Sylhet and East Bengal were included in Pakistan. And so Pakistan and India came
into being as two separate states.
Pakistans first year was terrible. Half million Indian Muslims were
either killed or taken prisoners. Six and a half million Muslims had to leave their
homes and came to Pakistan as refugees from Indian atrocities, and five and half
Hindus left for India. The Quaid-e-Azam was shocked at the killings and
destruction. Despite this he extended his hand of friendship towards India saying
that one who is an enemy of today may very well become a friend tomorrow.

SUMMARY

BIRKENHEAD DRILL
Birkenhead was a military ship. It was carrying soldiers and their
families from England to South Africa in February, 1851. Most of these soldiers
were inexperienced. The ship carried 630 persons on it. Among these hundred and
seventy were women and children.
There was a hidden and undiscovered rock underwater. The rock, which
was yet undiscovered and was not on the sea map. It was like a wild creature of
ocean latent under water and waiting for its prey. The unfortunate ship was near to
complete its uneventful voyage, when suddenly it struck with the hidden rock at 2
Oclock in the early morning at a distance of 64 Kilometers from Cape Town, on 25 th
February, 1851.Ten minutes later the ship struck with the rock again and split into
two parts. This sudden jerk awakened unlucky passengers from the peaceful
sleep .Very few of the people knew about the happening but they could guess that it
was something terrible. Everybody came out of their cabins to make their way to
deck .When the ship broke into two parts, the front part sank soon into waters but
the other rear part remained afloat. So, all the passengers managed to reach the
rear part.
Only three life-boats were undamaged with the capacity of sixty
passengers each. Thus, one hundred and eighty passengers could be saved out of
six hundred and thirty passengers. The wrecked ship could not float longer. Any
passenger, who could not find a room in any one of life boats, would have to face
certain terrible death. This situation would have caused panic. Men, women and
children might have crushed under the feet. The boats might have been overloaded
and sunk in the wild effort of everyone to reach at one of the life-boat and none out

of six hundred and thirty people would have been saved. But unlike other
happenings, there was no panic and confusion in the ship owing to soldiers who
managed complete discipline and heroism among the troops.
Women and children first was the order of the day. The commander of
the troops called them to assemble at one place and then captain and soldiers
stood in lines with their ranks as if they were on a regular drill, waiting their fate. A
commander set an example with the sacrifice of his life by pushing a piece of wood
to two drowning young soldiers to hold on. But the commander realized that the
wreckage could not bear the weight of the three persons so he let go his hold and
went into the water forever. Due to complete discipline, one hundred and ninety
four people were saved but four hundred and thirty six men drowned in the deep
water.
Birkenhead Drill Women and children first. It is the order followed on the ships
that are in danger. And we should stand till facing certain death so that the weak
ones may have a chance to live. This has been known as Birkenhead Drill since
then.

SUMMARY

THE MIRACLE OF RADIO

Wireless is the greatest of discoveries of the age. It has revolutionized
the methods of communications. The names of there persons, Maxwell of english,
Hertz of Germany and Marconi of Italy, stands out from among those who have
made it possible.
James clerk Maxwell, who was born in 1831, put forward the theory
that light and electricity are parts of the same thing. The theory was based on
mathematics calculations. It was later observed that light waves and electric waves
moved it the same speed which comes to about 186,000 miles per second, Wireless
waves are yet to discovered to as tha connecting like between electric waves and
light waver.
Hein rich hertz, a German , made laboratory, test with short frequency
electric waves to prove that Maxwell,s theory was correct. These waver were named
Hertzian waves after him and they established the possibility of wireless
communication, in 1894 lodge showed that it was practicable.
Guillermo maroconi, the son of an Italian father and an Irish mother,
saw his teacher making this demonstration, and was observed with the idea. He
experimented with Morse Telegraph key and a telephone received the signal from
one to the other without any wire. The standing aerial doubled the strength of the
wireless waver in 1896 the Marconi went to England and presented his invention to
the British Government in 1897 the Marconi wireless Telegraph company was
founded there. The postal department, they navy and the press gradually became
interested in this invention.
In 1907 Marconi successfully transmitted wireless signal over long
distances and showed that the earths curve did not interfere with these waves.
After that ship began to use these fore distress signals.
In 1912 Marconi managed to direct wireless in a strength line. This
invention opened up new vistas. After that it was made possible to send and receive
wireless waves carrying speech sound rather than sound signal. This led to the
invasion of radio, or the broadcasting system for entertainment and instruction.
Another scientist baird invented the method of sending pictures by
radio that was the bringing of television which was invented before the second

made air traffic safe by making in possible to locate aircraft. Radar works on the
Principle that flying aero plans high frequency waves can be detected. This
Detection helps to avoid collisions.
One of the latest developments is the radio telescope. The invention
isBased on the discovery that stars emit wireless waves. The radio telescope had
made the exploration of universe possible.

SUMMARY

The wolves of cernogratz

One of the last days of December, the baroness, the new owner of the
cernograz castle was engaged in a friendly conversation with her, guests. She was
telling them about a strange legend attached to the castle. She said that whenever
someone died in the castle all the wild beasts and wolves would appear from no
where and start howling all night long but the quickly brushed this legend aside by
saying that, it is only a gimmick to enhance the value of castle. She also said that
she did not believe in the legend as she had proof that nothing of the sort ever
happened. When her old mother _in_ law died in the castle nothing of the sort
happened and no wolves appeared. According to her it was utter rubbish and that
there was no truth in the legend. That the people had merely invented a story so as
to

give

cheap

publicity

to

the

place.

On bearing the account, Amalie von cernogratz and old governess employed in the
house

remarked.

The story is not as you have told it. Is not any one dies in the castle, that the
howling is heard. It is only heard, when a member of the cernogratz family, dies in
his family cast that the wolves appear in their thousands and start howling
The governess strongly protested and insisted the the legend was quite true
she know the family legend very well, as she was the last of the great cernogratz
family. The old governess repeated the actual legend in a note of defiance almost in
contempt She made it quite clear that no howling was heard if a stranger died in
the castle. But if a Cernogratz died in his family castle note only did the wolves
would how in chorus but also a large tree would crash in the park as the soul of the
dying one left its body. Naturally the company showed its disbelief they thought
that the old lady is pareadng to be in important parson she know that she will be
soon past work and the wants to appeal to our sympathies. That the old Amalie is
making a tales clam to be a cernogratz when the old governess left the room the
baroness and her guests were convinced that she is in ordinary woman and had
some how learnt the cernogratz legend from the peasants living in the vicinity.
Later on some mysterious happenings proved every word of the old governess. It so
happened that the old governess fell all and confined herself to her small, cheerless
room. Just than the company heard the how ling of wolves. Moved by some impulse

the Baroness went to the Governess room. To her horror, she fourd all the windows
open despite the biting cold while the old lady was lying on the cocuhterribly sick.
The Baroness rushed forward to shut the windows but the Governess forbade her
in a very stern manner she asked the Baroness to leave and left the window be
open as she wanted to her the Death Music of hear family. The Baroness
announced to her guests that the old governess was dying. While the guests were
talking. The heard a loud noise of a tree splitting and then crashing down, with a
loud thud. At that moment, the governess breathed her last.
The news of Amalie-von-Cernogratzs death and her affiliations to the cernogratz
family was confirmed in the newspaper the following day. Amalie the valued fried of
the baron and baroness gruebel had passed away in her old family castle.

SUMMARY
THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
English is not the language that has always been spoken in the British
isles nor is it the only language that is spoken there it is originally a foreign
language brought to these by foreign invaders.
These invaders were two Germanic tribes the Angles and the Saxons. They lived in
northern Germany and spoke different dialects of the same language. From these
dialects descended they from of the English language that is known as Anglo Saxon or old English. It remained the language of English from A.D 450 to A.D
1150 Later on two further invasions completely changed and modified the old
English and turned it in the course of there hundred year in to a compound
language which we call middle English middle English had been a mixture of
different regional dialects up to the fifteenth century.
However the written English of literature, journalism publish affairs
and commence his for centuries been almost uniform. An Englishmans speech can
tell us where he was born and brought up, but of he is well educated his writing
will not betray him.
What we call Standard English comes down from a dialect of Middle English
usually known as the late London dialect, that is, the English spoken in London in
the second half of the fourteen century; this was called the late London dialect
because this period approaches the end of the Middle English period by the middle
of the fifteen centaury. English had developed so far towards the language we know
today that could be classified as modern English.
The English spoken in and around London become the standard model for the
whole country. The court and the kings government need the London dialect. Since

London was the largest city and port in Britain, its language became very popular
in the sphere of commerce and trade. It first language was just spoken, but later on
two writers Chaucer and govern, developed it and made it popular as a written
language.
As there were no further foreign invasions, the language further developed under its
own impetus. There were no further changes in the language, so Middle English
merged into the early modern English Shakespeares age and into the language we
spoke now.
Anglo - Saxon is now dead language, but a good deal of its vocabulary has survived
in one from or another to the presented day. Many of the communist words in
modern English are Anglo - Saxon origin. Nearly all the strong verbs, most of the
prepositions and conjunctions are also remained under French influence for a long
time. French is basically a Latin language. Hence the majority of English words are
of Latin origin.
A language is always moving and developing. But these changes are slow in moving
and developing but these changes are slow in advanced time because the invention
of prating and the spread of education have fixed its traditional usages. The only
changes are a large increase in vocabulary. It has borrowed various words from
other language. For example the word admiral is derived from the compound Arabic
words Amirul-Har meaning chief of the sea similarly many other English words
have bee borrowed from other languages.

of modern science. He brought about a great revolution in science and changed old
beliefs because he acted upon these three important features. He worked on such
instruments as telescope and prism and then applied his mathematical theories to
scientific research.
If two scientists, different from each other in all other things working in
the same physical phenomena, they reach the same conclusions about them. Their
instruments will give them the same readings and the universal law of mathematics
will bind the calculation of both of them.
Man has achieved a remarkable success in solving scientific problems.
But it is pity that he has failed to solve so many political and social problems.
Science is doing much to diminish the social evil of poverty and disease. It has
enormously added to the comforts of man, but it has its own limitation. Its methods
apply only to those things with values such as happiness, goodness, beauty,
coverage, justice and pus ship.
Young people must be educated in modern science. Without the
education they will find this word in comprehensible. They can not be good citizens
of the word or of their own country unless they are aware of the values which under
he human belief, motives and conduct. In this period of history, religion is of
tremendous importance to the good member of a good society.

Summary
The Hostile Witness

Norman Charlton is a robber and a murderer. He lives as a servant in

White Hart Hotel. This hotel is in Kirby, a small Yorkshire town about
32 kilometers south of Darlington. He robbed the weekly wages of two
people at New Castle, who were going to their factory carrying
thousands of pounds. While committing the robbery, he faces protest
from the two persons. In reply he shoots them. One of them, named
John Edward Robson, gets killed while the other becomes seriously
wounded. Charlton escapes in a stolen sports car from the place of
robbery. After reaching a safe place, he leaves the car and asks for a
lift at about a hundred yards from that point. Fortunately, he gets a lift
from Mr. Earnest King who was on his way to White Hart Hotel. When
they reach the hotel, Charlton transfers the stolen bag from Mr. Kings
car into the hotel and places it behind the reception desk. He also
puts Kings luggage in a room and gets dressed in his white jacket. He
leaves the weapon of murder under the mattress. Mr. King sits in the
lounge and orders for cold drink. While enjoying cold drink, Mr. Abott
and two other guests, Mr. Cartor and Johnson enter the room. They
exchange greetings and then Mr. King gets informed about the
robbery and the murder. Mr. Cartor also tells about the checking of his
car by the police. While they were talking about the robbery, three
persons, Detective-Sergeant Manning and Police Constable Stevens
and Edwards, enter the hotel. They told the people about the security
and said that their duty was to check all the hotels in the North of

England. Detective-Sergeant Manning asks for the keys of the rooms

so that he could check the luggage of the guests. Everyone gives
them the keys except Mr. King, who thinks that this action was
unrespectable. But after some discussion he also gives the keys. the
detective then go up to check the rooms. When they return, one of
them holds a pistol in his hand, which had been fired recently. He tells
that this pistol was laid under the mattress in Mr. Kings room. He
suspects Mr. King for the murder. Charlton takes advantages of this
situation and gives the description of the murderer medium height
and build, fresh complexion, dark hair, moustache, horn-rimmed
glasses, Grey suit and Grey hat. This description exactly suited the
dressing of Mr. King, which made him more mistrustful and every
body stares at him. Charlton also gives the bag of money having
massive locks from behind the reception desk and says that this bag
was carried by Mr. King. Suddenly, Manning turns at Charlton and
orders the constable to arrest him. He suspected him of the spirit gum
and fake moustaches that were left on his upper lip. The lift which he
had taken from Mr. King made him more suspicious. He also asks him
of horn-rimmed glasses and receives the answer in positive. Manning
then arrests him and tells the people how Charlton had committed the
crime. He hid the pistol under the mattress in Mr. Kings room while he
as keeping the luggage and threw away his fake moustache soon after
killing the person. He had then taken lift from Mr. King at a bus stop
near Great North Road and gotten away safely from the police. This
entire work carried out by the police really impressed Mr. King and the
killer was caught.
