security during the electoral process

The Force Commander of the African Union Mission in Somalia

(AMISOM) Lt. General Osman Noor Soubagleh says the African Union
troops and Somali National Security Forces are committed to
securing the ongoing electoral process.
Lt. Gen Soubagleh was speaking on Saturday in Adado, the interim
administrative capital of Galmudug state, during a security
assessment mission to the capital.
There are Amisom troops deployed here to provide security as the
indirect electoral process continues. We have therefore come to
assess how the troops are doing, the Force Commander said.
There was an incident the other day; we also want to find out what
happened, Lt. Gen Soubagleh added, in reference to an incident
where shooting occurred outside of the electoral center in Adado
earlier in the week.
We have found out that the troops are working well with the
security officials such as NISA and the Somali police. They are also
working well with the FIEIT and SIEIT teams.
The troops were deployed in Adado, an area outside the AMISOMs
mandate in October 2016, to bolster the capacity of the Somali
security forces and enable elections to happen in the state.
There are only 18 seats left to be decided. It is important that the
rest of the process continues in a secure environment, Lt. Gen.
Soubagleh noted.
We have a good understanding between AMISOM and the regional
forces here. We are satisfied with what we have seen.
Galmudug state is one of the regions participating in the 2016
electoral process. Other states are Jubbaland, South West, Puntland
and HirShabelle. At the end of the electoral process, Galmudug will
have filled 36 seats allocated to the state, in the federal
parliaments lower chamber of the house.
End.
