FADE IN
EXT. DEER LAKE - NIGHT
"Stuck In A Hard Place" by Blue Foundation begins to play on
the SOUNDTRACK.
The scene opens with a panoramic view of the town, Deer
Lake, empty. Typical West Virginia town.
Buildings of red and orange brick are lit by the glow of
periodic street lamps. Dark, ominous clouds RUMBLE.
OCTOBER 31, 1996
An above view of a police vehicle, drives slowly down a
vacant street.
911 EMERGENCY RESPONDER (V.O.)
911, whats your emergency?
YOUNG GIRL (V.O.)
Hello? I heard screams. A young
girl screamed. It came from the
old church on Welland Drive.
(gasp)
There it is again. Please send
help. I dont know what to
do. Please!
INT. OLD CHURCH - SAME
SOUNDTRACK continues.
A cloaked man is faced away. The mesmerizing ambiance of
surrounding candles light a blood soaked altar.
A gruesome display of three young bodies lie motionless in a
partial circle.
Two children, a boy (5) and a girl (5), sit, tied on the
front pew. Gags prevent everything but a GASP from escaping
their lips. Tears roll down their flushed cheeks.
ON the mans withered hand as he runs them over various
weapons of choice. His hand grips firmly around a small
scythe.

The faceless man turns and approaches the children with


haste. The young girl pleads to the boy with her eyes, as
the man grabs the scuff of her neck, and throws her on top
of the bodies that drape the altar. The young boy sits
frozen in fear.
The gag, from around the girls mouth, is loosened, as she
SCREAMS out. The man is quick to shove the gag back in. He
leans in to hush the girl and his face is exposed.
FATHER ISAIAH HOLLOW
The blackness of his soul is reflected in the deep amber of
his eyes. The candles reflections flicker off his yellow
teeth as his lips purse. Wrinkles line the upper brow of
his forehead.
He runs his hand tenderly down the girls cheek as his other
hand tightens its grip around the scythe.
ON the young boy, ZACHARY "ZACK" JAMES, as his chest HEAVES,
and tears trickle from his puffy eyes.
ON the churchs stained glass windows and surrounding walls
as Father Hollows shadow appears. He holds down the girl
and swings the scythe. Blood splatters across the shadow.
EXT. OLD CHURCH - SAME
SOUNDTRACK fades.
Three police vehicles pull up, their cherries lighting up
the parameter of the churchs courtyard. Boards partially
cover the stained glass windows of the dilapidated church.
A thicker man, wearing a Sheriffs badge, emerges from the
middle vehicle. He scratches at the salt and pepper colored
scruff he passes off as facial hair. He reaches in his car,
pulls out a sandy brown hat and places it on his head.
SHERIFF STANLEY YAK presents himself as cool and confident.
He chews continuously on tobacco for several seconds before
spitting hard at the feet of DEPUTY COOKE.
Deputy Cookes boyish looks scream "fresh out of the
academy". His brunette curls escape the confides of his
hat. His cleaned-shaved skin exposing his chisel jawline.
Deputy Cooke hands the Sheriff a megaphone. Several
officers, guns drawn, kneel behind the opened doors of their
vehicles.

SHERIFF
(bellows)
Father Hollow. We know youre in
there. Come on out with your hands
up, and this wont get ugly.
INT. OLD CHURCH - SAME
Father Hollow kneels over the deceased girl. He lifts his
blood soaked hands into the light and closes his eyes. He
SNIFFS his hands before smearing the blood over his smiling
face.
SHERIFF (O.S.)
Father. I wont ask again. Come
on out or well take this church by
force.
Father Hollow snaps his head towards the window. His eyes
pierce the direction of the disturbance.
EXT. OLD CHURCH - SAME
Deputy Cooke watches the church for a beat, impatiently,
before turning to the Sheriff.
DEPUTY COOKE
So sir, what now?
SHERIFF
Storm the place. Take down Hollow
by any means necessary. But be
careful, he may have one or more of
the children in there.
OFFICER #1
Sir. Theres movement.
Hollows coming out.

I think

The two men turn to face the church doors as they slowly
open. Hollow emerges, scythe pressed firmly against Zacks
throat.
A few of the officers turn their heads toward the Sheriff,
for direction, as Deputy Cooke unsnaps his gun from its
holster.
SHERIFF
Father Hollow. We have the place
surrounded. Why dont you let the
boy go, and come peacefully. No
need for violence.

FATHER HOLLOW
Thats too bad Sheriff. The deeds
been done. Just this one left.
Father Hollow licks the girls blood from his lips, before
smiling menacingly at Deputy Cooke.
Deputy Cooke steps forward, gun aimed. The Sheriff places a
calm hand on Deputy Cookes chest pushing him back.
SHERIFF
(calmly)
Father. Youre going to give
yourself up.
The Father kneels down beside the boys ear.
FATHER HOLLOW
(whisper)
Walk. Slowly.
The Father lowers the scythe to his side, as Zack begins to
step slowly towards them.
Thats it.

SHERIFF
Nice and easy.

Father Hollow locks eyes with Deputy Cooke and smiles


widely. He swings the scythe high in the air, and slashes
towards Zack.
BANG. BANG. BANG.
Father Hollow drops the scythe to his side. He lowers his
head to reveal three bullet wounds, blood seeping, from his
chest. The Sheriffs gun smokes in the wind.
The officers attentions shift to Zack, who is now running
towards them. Officer #1 squats down and wraps a blanket
around Zack as he barrels into his arms. Cooke is the first
to lift up his head.
DEPUTY COOKE
Sheriff, Hes gone!
SHERIFF
He couldnt of gone far.

After

The officers storm off straight towards the church. Deputy


Cooke turns to his right, and vanishes into the woods.

5.
EXT. DEER LAKE FOREST - SAME
Father Hollow GALLOPS through the trees before coming to a
halt at the edge of a cliff.
He looks down into the black abyss of the lake, that is more
than forty feet below. He swings around to stare deep into
the barrel of Deputy Cookes gun.
FATHER HOLLOW
You know they screamed like pigs as
I gutted them empty. And for it I
shall get whats coming to me.
DEPUTY COOKE
Well, we agree on one thing.
INT. POLICE PATROL VEHICLE - SAME
Zack sits in the backseat, his eyes red and cheeks damp. The
boy FLINCHES at the sound of a single GUNSHOT echoing into
the night. Zack stares forward stoned-face for a beat.
FADE TO BLACK

INT. ZACKS APARTMENT - NIGHT


15 YEARS LATER
An empty bedroom. The walls stained with water damage that
streak the height of them. Aged wood floors are littered
with cutout newspaper clippings.
The bathroom door, to the left, is slightly ajar. The light
inside flickers.
INT. ZACKS BATHROOM - SAME
An exposed light bulb flickers once more as its chain
dangles below.
A man stands faced away. ZACK JAMES, 20, stares at his
partial reflection in the broken cabinet mirror. The light
bulb flickers again, as the tap leaks. TAP. TAP. TAP.
"Something to Remind You" by Staind begins to play on the
SOUNDTRACK.

Zack continues to stare at himself for a beat before turning
on the leaky faucet, and splashing a handful of water over
his face.
ON the sinks counter several pill bottles sit.

He turns the faucet off and grabs a towel and dries himself
completely.
Turning off the light, Zack EXITS.
INT. ZACKS APARTMENT - SAME
SOUNDTRACK continues.
Zack walks out from the dark bathroom walking past various
Deer Lake newspaper clippings that clutter the walls.
MONTAGE
-- CHILD ABDUCTED FROM BEDROOM
-- THE BOOGEYMAN STRIKES AGAIN
-- FIVE CHILDREN MISSING, TOWN PANICS
-- FATHER ISAIAH HOLLOW CALLED IN FOR QUESTIONING
-- (A photo of 5 year old Zack being embraced by his
parents) THE BOOGEYMAN IS DEAD! ONE SURVIVOR. OFFICERS BEGIN
SWEEP OF THE LAKE
Zack kneels under the bed, and reaches for a green knapsack
that he throws onto the bed.
He walks casually over to the desk and places a hand on the
chair and DRAGS it to the end of his bed.
Zack opens the knapsack and removes a thick rope which he
ties into a noose, and throws the rope above him. The rope
drops part way as he ties the other end to the bed post.
Zack steps onto the chair, and slides the rope over his head
and tightens it around his neck.

ZACK (V.O.)
They say, when you die, your life
flashes before your eyes.
SOUNDTRACK pauses. He jumps, kicking the chair out from
underneath him, sending it SLAMMING to the floor. Zack GAGS
and GASPS for air as his feet kick heavily. A beat.
ON his feet that dangle and twitch slightly.
CUT TO BLACK
FROM BLACK
INT. HOSPITAL - HALLWAY - LATER
SOUNDTRACK continues.
The sound of sirens met with the urgency of VOICES.
A team of doctors burst through a set of double doors,
pushing a gurney down the hall. The doctors call out random
stats in a FUZZ of noise.
Zack lies with an oxygen mask over his mouth, as he flutters
in and out of consciousness. The silhouettes of the medical
team block out the passing ceiling lights.
INT. HOSPITAL - EMERGENCY ROOM - SAME
The doctors grab the body board from under Zacks sluggish
body and lifts him onto the bed.
They roll him to one side and remove the board. Nurses
attach several heart monitors to Zacks chest in record
breaking time.
The heart monitor BEEPS once, and then flat-lines.
A masked physician appears with a defibrillator cart. The
doctor in charge lifts the paddles from the machine, as a
nurse smears a thick glop of gel onto the panels.
DOCTOR #1
Charge to two hundred.
(a beat)
Clear.
He buries the paddles deep into Zacks chest.
jumps in CONVULSIONS. They wait. Nothing.

DOCTOR #1
Charge again.
(a beat)
Clear.
The doctor pushes Zacks chest causing his body to jolt.
This time the flat line becomes a consistent stream of
BLIPS. HOLD on Zacks closed eyes for a beat.
FADE TO
EXT. ST. FRANCIS PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTION - MORNING
A rusty red/brown bricked building sits back within a wooded
surrounding.
ON a rod iron gate that opens as a yellow taxicab drives
down the long dirt driveway to the large building. Bars
cover each of the windows much like a prison.
Two large men, in white uniforms, stand, waiting at the
front doors.
INT. TAXI CAB - SAME
ON the rearview mirror. Zack sits in the backseat staring
out at the enormous building. The Taxi Drivers eyes glance
from the road to Zack.
TAXI DRIVER
Kinda nervous huh? Penny for your
thoughts?
ZACK
Is it that obvious?
TAXI DRIVER
Not really. I just have a gift for
reading people rather well.
EXT. ST. FRANCIS PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTION - SAME
The taxicab comes to a complete stop in front of the two
men, as a young red-headed woman stares down from behind the
bars of the top window.
The back passenger side door swings open, as Zack steps out
slowly.

He shuts the door and walks to the back of the taxicab where
the driver shuts the trunk door and points down to Zacks
suitcase, that lies on the ground.
ZACK
How much do I owe you?
TAXI DRIVER
Its already been taken care
of. Good luck to you son.
ZACK
Thanks.
Zack picks up the suitcase and walks towards the two men who
escort him inside. Zack makes eye contact with the young
red-headed woman, then ENTERS the building.
INT. MAIN HALL - SAME
The red-headed woman sits on the window ledge staring down
into the yard.
REBECCA "BECK" GRATIN (20) has green eyes that seem distant,
and curious. Her jeans are torn, for style not wear. Her
hairs pulled back into a tight ponytail that falls down
over her white t-shirt.
She shifts slightly at the sound of the main door, and
footsteps on the stairs, which ECHO throughout the room.
PANNING left past the Nurses station lies a secured hallway
with two chain-linked doors.
The Nurse at the desk buzzes Zack and the Orderlies
in. When they have made it through, one of the men stops
Zack and points to the Nurse.
NURSE #1
Zachary James?
(Zack nods)
Please empty your pockets and hand
your suitcase over to Keith.
The Orderly who had pointed to the Nurse lifts out his hands
and Zack hands him his suitcase.
KEITH HALL has biceps as round as pythons, and by the look
of him his bite is just as deadly.
Zack empties out his pockets into a metal bowl that sits on
the counter.

NURSE #1
Thanks. Now if youll follow Wes,
he will show you to your room.
INT. COMMON AREA - SAME
Zack nods then follows WES JOHNSON through the main hall.
Wes walks with military discipline, which Zack duly
notes. However his interactions with the patients is
friendly and courteous.
Zack passes by the window Beck is perched on and stares
straight into her eyes for a beat. She turns her head back
to the window, uninterested.
INT. ZACKS INSTITUTION BEDROOM - SAME
The door swings open to Wes and Zack, whos eyes scan the
rather small and plain room.
WES
I know what youre thinking. Its
not exactly the Ritz, however it
does come with a desk. Regrettably
youre on suicide watch for the
next 24 hours, til you see the
Doc, so the desk is bolted to the
wall, theres no chairs or closets.
Zack steps inside and looks around. The room is a
depressing medical white. It contains a desk, a nightstand,
a single bed and a barred window. Zack turns to face Wes.
WES
Dinners at five, lights out at
eight. If you want to wait here
for your suitcase you can, Keith
shouldnt be too much
longer. Otherwise feel free to
have a look round the common area.
Zack nods, and Wes turns and leaves. Zack sits on the bed,
and stares up at the extremely bright light bulb.
ZACK (V.O.)
Not exactly the bright lights I was
hoping for.

11.
INT. COMMON AREA - NOON
The large room is currently occupied by twenty
residents. In the far left corner is a living area
consisting of two sofas and a caged-in television that hangs
from the wall.
Behind the living area are two large pool tables. A tall
brunette man, TYLER ORE, 21, is playing against an
Italian-looking Orderly, NEIL CONTI, 38.
Tyler sinks the last black ball into the corner pocket. He
places the pool cue on the table and lifts an opened hand
towards Neil.
TYLER
Pay up.
Neil looks over his shoulder to an on-looking Keith, who
just shrugs.
NEIL
Double or nothing.
TYLER
(shakes head)
You orderlies never learn.
Tyler picks the cue back up and begins to chalk it.
Zack ENTERS from the DORM HALL. He stops and his eyes
wander to the window where Beck had been sitting, but is no
longer there.
He continues to walk through the COMMON AREA looking around.
In the living area sits a lone patient. SHANE COLLINS, 19,
has brunette hair slicked firmly to his head. His brown
eyes glued to the soundless television that hangs from the
wall.
Zack makes his way towards Shane, passing by the pool game
that has started to get ugly.
TYLER
Shit.
(beat)
Come on, man.

This is bullshit!

NEIL
Whats wrong Ore?
cocky now are we?

Not sounding so

Neil smiles as he sinks in another ball.

Zack walks past Shane and plants himself onto the opposite
sofa. He smiles at Shane who glances at him, then back to
the television.
ZACK
Wouldnt happen to have the remote,
to turn up the volume, would you?
SHANE
Were not allowed to have the
volume on. Too much noise makes
the patients...
ZACK
Crazy?
SHANE
(smiles)
A little bit.
TYLER (O.S.)
Are you fucking kidding me?
hustled me, man.

Tyler slams the pool cue off the wall, breaking it in


two. Neil gives a cocky nod, as he turns to smile at
Keith.
Tyler storms off towards the DORM HALL and the Orderlies
begin to laugh. Tyler turns and runs at Neil, knocking him
to the ground and landing a punch to his jaw.
Keith, from his belt, pulls out a wooden
Tyler in the ribs. Tyler falls off Neil
wiping blood from his bottom lip. Keith
Tyler, from behind, and pulls him to his

baton and HITS


and Neil sits up
grabs a GASPING

NEIL
Not the smartes move Ore.
(snorts back)
I believe some alone time in "the
box" should straighten you out.
Tyler fights the grip of Keith who drags him out of the
room. Neil reaches in his pocket, removing a set of keys,
and twirling them around his finger. He wipes his lip once
more as he EXITS.
ON Shane and Zack as they turn back around from the
scene. Zack stares off into the television.

ZACK
That guy always this rowdy?
SHANE
Tyler? Yeah. Hes got some issues.
ZACK
Dont we all. Somehow I fight the
urge not to make a complete ass out
of myself.
SHANE
He is an ass, a big one, but he
cant help it.
(beat)
Im Shane by the way.
Shane extends a hand towards Zack. Zack turns his head
towards Shane and glances down at his hand for a beat before
reaching out his.
ZACK
Zack.
(beat)
So whats "the box"?
SHANE
Its where they throw Tyler, to
cool him off. Sort of like
solitary confinement. Neil knows
he hates it, so sometimes hell
throw him in there for no reason.
ZACK
The guy that got punched?
SHANE
Thats the one. Let me give you a
little advice. Stay away from Neil
at all costs. Life here will be a
lot easier.
Zack looks over his shoulder at the DORM HALL entrance.
INT. THE BOX - SAME
The door swings open as Tyler is thrown to the ground.
immediately stands up and goes toe to toe with Keith.

The box is a 6 by 6 room, no windows, only a vent in the


top left corner and pale walls.

Neil pushes Keith to the side as he ENTERS.

TYLER
Okay Neil. I hear you loud and
clear. Lets not do anything rash.
NEIL
(to Keith)
Rash? Did you hear that? Ore
doesnt want us to do anything
rash.
(to Tyler)
Maybe you shouldve thought bout
that before sucker punchin me.
TYLER
Look I apologize, I cant help it
not that Im making any excuses.
Neil nods and turns to Keith before swinging his fist and
landing a punch deep into Tylers gut.
Tyler buckles briefly before standing back up.
TYLER
I really hope youre not the muscle
Neil, cause honestly you throw
like a little bitch.
This time Keith nails Tyler behind the knees with his
baton. Tyler falls to the ground, and begins to LAUGH
through his pain.
TYLER
Is that the best you pussies got.
NEIL
Fine.
Neil lands a kick to Tylers ribs.
NEIL
(to Keith)
Lets teach this punk a
lesson. Nothing visible.

INT. DORM HALL - SAME


GRUNTS and THUDS echo as we pull back down the empty
corridor.
INT. CAFETERIA - EVENING
The rather large mess hall is filled with
residents. Orderlies and Nurses walk through the rows of
tables handing out medications, and attending to patients.
ON Zack as he ENTERS the CAFETERIA and walks towards a pile
of empty trays.
He picks one up and slides it along the counter towards a
heavy set woman in a hairnet. Her ivory skin wrinkles with
a look of disgust. Sweat drips profusely from her creased
brow. This woman hates her job.
Zack plants himself in front of her letting his eyes wander
over the food selection. The woman scoops a ladle of what
appears to be chili, or goulash, so Zack hopes.
ZACK
Uh, no thanks.
The woman splashes the mystery stew into a bowl on Zacks
tray. He looks down at the bowl, then back to the woman.
ZACK
(sarcastically)
Mmmm, smells delicious.
The woman grunts as Zack continues to move down the counter,
placing a carton of 2% milk and a bowl of cherry Jell-o on
his tray.
ON Zack as he turns to face the crowded CAFETERIA. He scans
the room for an empty table. Shane, who sits solo at a
table, waves vigorously at Zack.
BECK (O.S.)
Looks like youve made a friend
already.
Zack swings around to face Beck and a beautiful, blond girl,
who smiles then continues to browse the food selection.
VALERIE DUNNS, 21, hazel eyes explore the food as she taps
her fingers on her empty tray. Valerie is big on the
mealtime production, she looks but never touches.

ZACK
What can I say? Im a people
person.
He gives a sarcastic grin then proceeds to Shanes
table. Valerie turns to watch Zack walk away and then to
Beck.
VALERIE
Whos the new guy? Hes kinda cute.
(beat)
Now thats an ass you could bounce
a quarter off of.
BECK
(matter of fact)
Zachary James.
VALERIE
Oh, youve already met?
BECK
You could say that.
The woman, in the hairnet, places a large amount of the stew
in a bowl and tosses it on Valeries tray. Valerie leaps
back as the stew splashes a bit on impact.
VALERIE
(yells)
Excuse me Sasquatch, did I say I
wanted this shit?
The woman smiles as she gives Valerie the middle
finger. Valerie grabs the tray. Her and Beck turn and
begin to walk away.
VALERIE
I swear that woman is out to give
me two asses, like her.
(turns her head)
Bitch.
ZACKS P.O.V. - Valerie and Beck walk along the furthest
aisle. Valerie holds a tray of food shell never eat,
whereas Beck never grabbed a single item. Valerie tosses
her tray into the garbage can and the two EXIT through the
door at the back of the CAFETERIA.
SHANE (O.S.)
Valerie Dunn, and Rebecca... Beck
Gratin. St. Franciss finest.
Zack turns to give Shane a weird look.

SHANE
What? Im crazy, not dead.
Zack CHUCKLES as he eats a spoonful of stew, and immediately
spits it into a napkin.
ZACK
Ugh! This shits nasty.
eat this crap?

SHANE
I dont.
Zack looks down at Shanes neatly kept tray. A spoon and
fork sit parallel on the right side of a bowl of salad. A
napkin sits parallel to that on the left.
Shane wipes the surrounding table space vigorously with a
wet nap.
SHANE
(eyes never leaving table)
Did you know that you can find more
germs on a cafeteria table than a
toilet seat?
ZACK
You a germaphobe or something?
Shane looks up, then back down to what he is doing.
No.

SHANE
O.C.D.

Looking somewhat embarrassed, Shane goes back to scrubbing


the table. Zack gives a sympathetic look before sticking
another spoonful of stew in his mouth. This time he
swallows. He GRUNTS, and makes a disgusted face.
INT. THE BOX - SAME
Tyler slouches in the corner of the room, his arms wrapped
around his chest.
Light pierces the dark as the door opens slowly.
stands in front of the light, Keith.
KEITH
You alright Ore.

TYLER
That depends, you got my stuff, or
did I take a beating for nothing?
KEITH
Depends, you got my cash?
Tyler lifts up his shirt and reveals a wad of bills that are
tucked into his pants. He pulls it out and hands it to
Keith.
Keith runs his fingers through the bills.
KEITH
And its all here?
TYLER
What do you think?
Keith places the money into the breast pocket of his white
shirt and removes a couple of little plastic baggies with a
white powdered substance in them.
Tyler slides up the wall. He pauses for a beat, before
reaching for the packages.
Keith holds the baggies firmly as Tyler pulls.
KEITH
You know you dont have to get your
ass kicked every time for us to do
this exchange.
TYLER
Its okay. I enjoy punching that
dickhead, any chance I get.
Keith smiles as he releases the baggies and Tyler walks
slowly from the room.
INT. ZACKS INSTITUTION BEDROOM - NIGHT
"Infinite Arms" by Band of Horses begins to play on the
SOUNDTRACK.
Zack lays on his bed, one arm behind his head, his other
hand holds a little gold cross, from around his neck.
KEITH (O.S.)
Lights out.

The lights in the room, as well as in the hall, go


out. Zack continues to stare intensely at the cross for a
beat before a light RASP at the door draws his attention
away.
Before he can utter a sound the door opens slightly and Beck
slides through, shutting the door behind her. Zack slides
up the mountain of pillows.
Beck walks over to the right side of Zacks bed.
his legs over the edge of the bed.

ZACK
(whispers)
What are you doing?
Without a word, Beck slowly lifts her shirt over her
head. Her hair falls softly down as she drops her shirt to
the floor. She takes a step forward, standing between
Zacks legs as his breath HEAVIES.
He stares intently into Becks green eyes as she reaches for
his shirt, and helps Zack remove it.
She grabs him around his neck and kisses him
passionately. Zack begins to lean back as Becks body
follows in silent obedience.
The kissing intensifies only to be stopped abruptly as Beck
arches up.
ON the back of Becks shoulders.
removes her bra.

ON Zack, as a grin slowly stretches across his face.


Zack wraps his arms around Beck and brings her firmly but
delicately underneath him. He gazes into her eyes before
diving into the tender roughness of their kiss.
MINUTES LATER -- Now under the sheets, the couple arches and
contorts in ecstasy.

corpse. Beck is completely gutted. Her innards lie in a
pool of blood, on the once crisp, white sheets.
Zacks GASPS turn into a slight hyperventilation for a beat.
ON Becks corpse.
IN A FLASH -- She turns over reaching for Zack.
BECK
Help me.
IN A FLASH -- A cloaked figure runs from the shadows, behind
the door. He slashes forward with a scythe.
IN A FLASH -- Zack jolts up, AWAKE, in a cold sweat and very
much alone.
He stares at his clean palms, then turning his hands over to
look at the backs of his hands. No blood. He takes in a
deep breath as he rubs his neck, then looks to the
nightstand.
ON the nightstand as Zack reaches for a gold cross and chain
that lies on top.
Zack wraps and clips the chain around his neck. His hands
slowly follow the curvature of the chain until he reaches
the cross. He stares at it for a beat before kissing
it. Zack slides down the pillows, turns over and falls back
asleep.
WOMAN (V.O.)
Mr. James, youre new to the group,
why dont you introduce yourself?
INT. THERAPY ROOM - MORNING
CLOSE UP of Zack who stares out a caged window, rain beats
off the glass in rhythmic fashion.
WOMAN
Zack?

Zack snaps his head to a middle-aged woman, DR. AUBREY HAWK,


31, sandy blond hair, curious look, legs crossed holding a
file folder.
DR. HAWK
Im sure everyone here is curious
to know a little bit about
you. What brings you here, to St.

(matter of fact)
I tried to kill myself.
Everyone, who was originally uninterested, perks up and
gives Zack their full attention.
The room is the size of a public school classroom. In the
middle of the room, six hard-plastic chairs are positioned
in a circle.
In the chairs sit Dr. Hawk, Tyler, Beck, Zack, Valerie and
Shane.
ON Dr. Hawk who places the file folder on her knees, crosses
her arms, and leans back in her chair.
DR. HAWK

Zack turns his head to stare out the window once more.

The door opens as Shane is pushed aside by Tyler who
EXITS. Shane SIGHS and follows him out, followed by Valerie
and Beck, who glances back at Zack.
ON Zack, as he EXITS, a hand flashes in front of him
SLAMMING the door frame and blocking his way.
DR. HAWK
Can I have a word with you?
Zack turns back into the room as Dr. Hawk shuts the door.
The other four stand in the hallway watching on.

Zack takes a seat in a plastic chair and Dr. Hawk leans
against a desk in front of him.
DR. HAWK
Seems to me that we may have gotten
off on the wrong foot. I like
helping people Zack. Its who I
am. Its what I do.
(beat)
Do you mind?
Dr. Hawk picks up a pack of cigarettes from the desk and
offers one to Zack, who declines. She shrugs and places a
cigarette in her mouth and lights it.
She takes in a big inhale, and exhales slowly.
DR. HAWK
God, Ive been wanting to do that
all morning. Im trying to quit
actually.
She throws the lighter onto the desk.

ON Dr. Hawk who is lying dead on the desk, bruised and
sliced multiple times, blood runs down her wounds. Her
mouth hangs open, in what might have been her final
SCREAM. Her glazed eyes do not flinch as a fly lands.
DR. HAWK (V.O.)
Get what Im saying?
Zack snaps out of it, and sees a very much ALIVE Dr. Hawk.

Zack emerges from the room, shutting the door behind him.

Beck leans up against the wall behind Zack. Zack turns from
her and begins to walk down the hall. Beck follows.

Beck turns and continues to walk away from Zack. After a
beat a somewhat annoyed and intrigued Zack turns and
continues to walk.
INT. ZACKS INSTITUTION BEDROOM - NIGHT
A shirtless Zack stands in front of a dresser, the top
drawer open, filled with shirts. He pulls out a black
v-neck t-shirt and pulls it over his head. He shuts the
drawer and walks over to the nightstand.
The gold cross sits on the nightstand. He picks it up and
latches it behind his neck, then tucks the cross partially
into his shirt.
WES (O.S.)
Lights out.
The hall and room go dark leaving only the glow of the moon,
that lights the room. Zack sits on the bed tying a pair of
white sneakers.
A light rasp at the door steals his attention, as Beck
slides into the room, shutting the door behind her.
BECK
Hope youre decent. Oh. Good.
Youre ready. Follow me, and keep
quiet.
ZACK
Where are we going?
BECK
Youll see. Now shut it and
follow.
INT. DORM HALL - SAME
Wes walks towards the far end of the hall, passing Zacks
room. Zacks door slowly opens as Beck sticks her head out
and watches Wes walk down the corridor and around the
corner. She opens the door fully and confidently walks out.

(half whisper)
This way.
Beck motions for Zack to follow her. Zack looks both ways,
walks out, and shuts the door softly. He lightly jogs to
catch up to her.
INT. COMMON AREA - SAME
Beck stops at the entrance to the COMMON AREA.
ON a nurse in the NURSES STATION who is wheeling around on
her chair, grabbing papers and fitting them into file
folders.
Zack goes to walk past Beck but she stops him with a hand on
his chest. She places a finger to her lips and then points
to the NURSES STATION.
Zack lowers his head to look at Becks hand that is rested
on his chest.
ON the nurse, who picks up a clipboard from the desk, and
EXITS the NURSES STATION and into the back room.
Beck looks back at Zack, who is still looking down at her
hand. She grabs his shirt and pulls him, as she SHUFFLES
along the side wall.
Beck stops in front of a door that reads
PERSONNEL ONLY.
She rummages in her pocket, pulling out a set of keys. Beck
opens the door and smiles at Zack as she ENTERS into the
pitch black room. Zack looks around once more then ENTERS.
INT. "PERSONNEL ONLY" CLOSET - SAME
The doors shuts, and its now completely dark.

She gives him a weird look, and SIGHS with impatience.
Zack helps Beck grab the corner of a shelving unit. They
slide it along the floor SILENTLY, swinging it out, and
revealing a door.
BECK
Old stairwell to the basement. I
found it a few years back. Been
our hangout ever since.
ZACK
How long have you been here?
Beck grabs the handle and opens the door.
BECK
Long enough.
She opens her arm, gesturing Zack to go first. He EXITS the
closet. Beck follows, looking back into the far corner.

The two descend two flights of stairs cautiously.

ON a hand, which holds a small vial, that pours white powder


onto a glass table.

powder into rows.
ON Tyler, who snorts the white powder with a rolled dollar
bill.
He sniffs it back and hands the dollar to Valerie who sits
beside him on a ragged, old, orange sofa.
VALERIE
Whered you get this stuff?
TYLER
I have my connections.
Valerie flicks her hair behind her ear, lowers her head to
the table and snorts.
She sits back up and wipes her nose. Valerie hands the bill
to Shane who paces nervously at the end of the sofa.
SHANE
Did you know that deaths caused by
drug overdose have more than
doubled in the last five years?
TYLER
Yes or no, Rainman.
VALERIE
(to Shane)
Its okay, you dont have to.
Shane smiles at Valerie.
TYLER

Tyler grabs the bill from Valerie and goes down for another
round as Beck and Zack ENTER.
Shane smiles at Zack who gives him a half smile.
BECK
Guys, you all remember Zack.
Tyler sits up, wiping his nose before rubbing his hand on
his jeans and presenting it to Zack.

TYLER

Zack shakes Tylers hand almost unwillingly.


TYLER
Now this party can really get
started.
MINUTES LATER -- ON an old tape deck radio.
Valerie squats in front of the radio, and adjusts the
aerial. The sound of static begins to disappear.
"Dead and Gone" by The Black Keys begins to play QUIETLY on
the SOUNDTRACK.
VALERIE
I love this song.
Valerie stands up and removes her jacket. She tosses it onto
the back of the sofa. Valerie reaches out her hands to
Shane who sits on the arm of the sofa.
VALERIE
Come on shy guy. How about a
dance?
Shane lowers his gaze, shaking his head.
SHANE
I dont dance. I cant dance.
VALERIE
Come on. I dont bite. Youre
just gonna leave me hanging out
here?
She steps forward and grabs Shanes hands. Beck pushes him
off the sofa with a LAUGH. The two begin to dance, Valerie
seductively, and Shane just sways.

Tyler sets up another couple of lines on the glass coffee
table. He offers Zack the dollar bill. Zack shakes his
head and Tyler offers the bill to Beck.
BECK
You know I dont do that shit. And
if you were smart, you wouldnt
either. Its going to be the death

TYLER

polite. Besides I only do it to
calm my nerves.
BECK

falls into the coffee table, knocking over a full bottle of
rum onto the table, and Tylers stash.
TYLER
(yells)
Dude, what the fuck?
VALERIE
Tyler, keep it down.

Tyler jumps up from the sofa, and SCREAMS at the top of his
lungs. He flips the table over which SMASHES into a million
shards of glass. The group jump back.
Tyler lunges at Shane but is blocked by Zack.
TYLER
Get outta my way.
Tyler goes to walk past Zack, but Zack grabs his arm and
pulls him back.
Tyler takes a swing at Zack, who dodges and uppercuts Tyler,
sending him flying onto the shards of glass.
ON Tyler who wipes blood that has now started to gush from
his nose.
Valerie rushes to Tylers side and grabs his arm to help him
up. He shoves her back and she hits the sofa.
VALERIE
Well fuck you too then.

She stands up and walks behind Zack.


BECK
Tyler, maybe you should go, get
cleaned up and cool off. Come back
with a level head.
Tyler lifts himself from the ground, and brushes himself
off.
TYLER
Fuck you guys. And you...
He points to Zack.

...you better watch yourself.
He kicks the frame of the table, sending it flying into the
wall, as he storms out of the room.
ZACK
Everyone okay? What the hell is
that guys problem?
VALERIE
He suffers from rage
blackouts. Ninety percent of the
time hes fine, but he could go
zero to sixty like that.
Valerie SNAPS her fingers.
BECK
Its a form of Bipolar
disorder. Apparently before he was
diagnosed he beat up two kids
really bad. One is now a
vegetable.
ZACK
And the other one?
VALERIE
Never woke up from the coma.
Beck walks towards the exit.

"Silhouette of A Life" by 10 Years begins to play on the
SOUNDTRACK.
The room is lit, somewhat, by the moonlight that enters
through the windows near the ceiling.

A row of sinks, and mirrors line the left wall. To the


right are several rows of lockers and benches. Behind the
lockers are the showers.
ON the locker room door as a bloodied Tyler ENTERS and walks
over to the second sink.
Tyler stares at his reflection, examining his many
wounds. His nose is slightly to the left, broken.
TYLER
For fucks sakes.
He grabs his nose with his right hand, and slams it with his
left. A CRACK rings out and Tyler GRUNTS loudly.
TYLER
(whispers)
FUCK.
His knees buckle and he catches himself on the sink.
gains composure and takes a deep BREATH.

Tyler

He turns on the faucets and reaches for some paper


towel. Wetting the towels he softly cleans the blood that
drips from his nose.
He looks back into the mirror, then spits blood and gob into
the sink. Behind a locker stands a cloaked figure. The
figure dodges behind the locker.
Tyler, startled, swings around. He turns the faucets off,
and throws the paper towel into the sink.
Tyler moves through the rows of lockers to investigate.
TYLER
Okay dude, not a smart move
following me in here. You may have
landed that last punch, but there
will not be a second one.
Tyler walks through the rows of lockers, reaching the last,
and turning to face...NOTHING.
He slams his fist against the locker.
TYLER
Okay dip-shit, Im done playing
games. Come out and face me like a
man.

The faucets from the used sink TURNS ON. Water pours as
Tyler storms back to the sinks. He turns off the water and
looks around.
IN A FLASH -- All the showers behind him TURN ON.
Tyler spins around alarmed.

Neil opens a little black case and pulls out a small syringe
that he sticks into Tylers arm.

The Orderlies drag a struggling Tyler from the locker
room. Neil zips up his case. Movement behind the lockers
cause him to look for a beat. Nothing. Neil turns and
EXITS.
INT. DORM HALL - SAME
SOUNDTRACK continues.
The men drag, a very drugged, Tyler down the hall.

TYLERS P.O.V. - Blurred vision shows the floor as it
passes. He lifts his head to the ceiling where a cloaked

Tyler opens his mouth to speak but only a GRUNT escapes.
When they reach the metal door of THE BOX, Neil pulls out
his keys and unlocks the heavy lock.
The Orderlies drag Tyler in and drop him to the padded
ground. They CHUCKLE as they EXIT the room. Neil shuts and
locks the door. He opens a narrow slot at eye level.
NEIL
Sweet dreams, asshole.
He slams it shut and the three men walk back down the hall
LAUGHING, and MUMBLING the entire way.

INT. THE BOX - SAME
SOUNDTRACK continues.
Tyler slowly crawls to the far corner and sits himself up.
ON the crack at the bottom of the door is the shadow of
someone outside.
TYLER
Ne...Neil, let me out.

Tylers head bobs as he looks around the empty room. A
CREAK in the blackness of the opposite corner grabs Tylers
attention.
He attempts to focus, but is unable to due to the blurred
vision. A HISS escapes from the shadows as a silver blade
emerges out of the dark.
TYLER
What the f...
The end of a scythe sinks deep into Tylers mouth and out
the back of his head.
He begins to panic as the caped assailant rips the blade
from his mouth.
THE BOOGEYMAN.
Blood oozes out of Tylers mouth as he attempts to crawl
towards the door.
The Boogeyman plunges the scythe deep into the spine of
Tyler. He tries to SCREAM but CHOKES out blood. Hes
lifted high in the air and thrown hard against the wall.
His bloodied, limp body begins to convulse. The Boogeyman
lets out a GRUNT as he swings his weapon slicing Tylers
head clean off.
ON Tylers body. Blood squirts from the neck for a beat
before the body slumps to the ground.

The Boogeyman cleans the blade on his cloak, and walks back
into the shadows disappearing into the darkness.
INT. DORM HALL - SAME
Pulling back from the door, and down the hall to reveal
blood seeping from under THE BOX door.
BECK (V.O.)
And that takes care of that.

INT. BASEMENT COMMON AREA

- SAME

Beck dumps the last dustpan of glass into a large garbage


can. Shane sits on the couch lightly rocking back and
forth, almost unnoticeable.
Valerie sits beside Shane, bent over, staring at the
floor. As Zack walks by a breeze creates a movement under
the sofa that catches Valeries eye.
ON Valeries hand that reaches under the couch, and pulls
out a newspaper clipping.
She lifts it up, and begins to read.
VALERIE
This is weird.
SHANE
Whats that?
VALERIE
I found this old newspaper
clipping. Where did this come
from?
SHANE
I shudder to think.

sofa. Beck, Valerie and Shane stare intently.

I was five years old when I was
abducted. Ill never forget that

FADE TO:
EXT. JAMESS RESIDENCE 1996 - DAY
Children, in many Halloween costumes, run and play around a
rather clean and large backyard. Tables of food, and
beverages sit in a row. At the end of the table is
presents.
A cameras FLASH.
A five year old Zack stands, smiling, between both of his
parents. Friends and family surround him as he blows out
five candles on top of a jack-o-lantern birthday cake.
Black and orange, helium-filled, balloons flap slowly in the
breeze. A large group of children wait patiently for cake.
Zack is dressed like Dracula, hair slicked back, white
collar shirt, black cape. He smiles innocently exposing a
pair of white plastic fangs.
ZACK (V.O.)
They had invited everyone in the
neighborhood and even some of their
church friends, including Father
Isaiah Hollow.
Father Hollow stands beside a short, round man who is too
lost in conversation to realize that Father Hollow is not
listening, but rather eyeing happy, young Zack.

INT. JAMESS RESIDENCE 1996 - HALLWAY - NIGHT


Zack and his mother walk up the stairs hand in hand.

Zacks hair as Zack begins to laugh.

That night my parents said
goodnight and tucked me in. I
awoke about an hour
later. Something moved in my
closet.
Zack swings his feet over the edge of the bed, and walks
cautiously to the closet. He takes a deep BREATH before
opening the closet door.
IN A FLASH -- Father Hollow pushes back on Zack, pressing,
firmly, a chloroform filled towel around Zacks face.
ZACK (V.O.)
I was the last one he needed.
INT. BASEMENT COMMON AREA - EARLY DAWN
Valerie and Shane exchange looks, as Beck stays focused.
SHANE
Needed for what?
ZACK
(ignores Shane)
The town dubbed him the
Boogeyman. A kidnapper that stole
children from their sleep. The
police were clueless. They had no
idea Hollow could ever be involved
with something so sinister as the
abduction of children. How could
they, he was a well respected
priest. He had the whole town
fooled.

Zack stops pacing and stares at the group, who are hanging
off his every word.
ZACK

evidence to hold him, considering

VALERIE
But what did he need you for?
Zack eyes shift to the floor, takes a deep BREATH, then
looks back up to the group.
ZACK
On Halloween night he slaughtered
four children in front of me. I
was to be the fifth, and final
one. Seems the good Father was no
God fearing man. He was a devil
worshiper, and our blood was his
sacrifice to his god.
Valerie GASPS as Shane tenses up, and begins to move his
fingers, as if counting them. Beck exchanges looks with
Valerie, then back to Zack.
ZACK
The cops showed up and stopped
Hollow before he could finish the
job.
(beat)
I was meant to die that night.
(beat)
And Ive spent every day since
waiting for Hollow to find me. You
know, unfinished business, and all.
Beck grabs the clipping, stands up and holds it out to Zack.
BECK
It says that an Officer named Cooke
killed Father Hollow.

They never found his body, and now
Im stuck in this place. Waiting
for him to show up and finish the
job. Who knows, he may already be
here.
BANG.
The group jump, as Keith hits the garbage can with his
baton. Neil stands cross-armed, not impressed.
NEIL
Well, well, well. Looks like weve
got ourselves some more
troublemakers.
INT. THERAPY ROOM - MORNING
ON a closed door.
Dr. Hawk taps her pen hard against a file folder on her
lap. In front of her sits Beck, Shane, Valerie and Zack.

Awkward silence, as the group look at each other then back
to Dr. Hawk. After a minute she slams the file and pen on
the desk.
The pen rolls off falling to the floor. She stands up,
walks around the desk and leans up against it.
DR. HAWK
Anyone care to explain how exactly
you got into the basement?
The group remains SILENT for a beat.
DR. HAWK
Fine. Did we all have a fun time
last night?
Valerie lifts her head up.
VALERIE

Hawk. She pushes herself off the desk, and grabs the file
folder. Opening it up she scans the page.
DR. HAWK
He was transported to another
facility. One that was better
equipped to deal with his disorder.
ZACK (O.S.)
Overnight?
The group turn to face Zack.
ZACK
Doesnt that seem weird?
DR. HAWK
No, what seems weird to me Mr.
James is that nothing like this has
ever happened before. Youre not
even here two days and all hell
breaks loose.
(beat)
Let me make myself clear, to all of
you. If any of you put so much as
a toe out of line, there will not
be a God powerful enough to stop my
wrath. Is that understood?

INT. NURSES STATION - SAME
Dr. Hawk walks briskly to the NURSES STATION.
NURSE LAIR sits filing pages into random file folders. Her
locks of auburn pushed back neatly under a white nurses
cap. Her cherry red lipstick matches her painted nails
exactly. She is pristine.
DR. HAWK
Nurse Lair.
Nurse Lair looks up from her work.
DR. HAWK
Hi. I was wondering if you would
happen to have a copy of Tyler
Ores final documents. He was
transferred last night, and I just
wanted to make sure everything was
in order.
Nurse Lair closes the file in front of her and hands the
documents to Dr. Hawk.
NURSE LAIR
I was just finishing his paperwork
up.
Dr. Hawk opens the file and skims through it.
DR. HAWK
Who was the physician who
authorized his transfer?
NURSE LAIR
Dr. Goldstein was on duty last
night.
Dr. Hawk closes the file and smiles at the nurse.

EXT. ST. FRANCIS PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTION - AFTERNOON


The backyard is filled with patients and Orderlies.

The sun reflects brightly off the windows of the


building. The grass trembles with the wind.
VALERIE
Seriously guys, I was sure we were
gonna be in a lot more shit than
that. Arent you guys surprised?
Valerie turns around to face the group.

ON the forest. Tyler stands half hidden behind a giant tree


trunk. His t-shirts soaked red from the blood that seeps
down from his neck, and mouth. He GARGLES and reaches out
to Shane.
FROM BEHIND a hand grabs Shanes shoulder.
Shane whips around to face Neil.

Across the yard Zack watches as Neil shoves Shane again,


then proceeds to roll up his sleeves. Zack pushes the girls
aside as he runs over to Shanes side.
ZACK
We got a problem over here?
NEIL
Why dont you mind youre own bees
wax, newbie. Dont want to end up
like your buddy Tyler now do we?
Zacks eyes widen.
ZACK
What did you guys do to Tyler?
Neil motions Zack to come closer.
NEIL
He got his.
Neil starts to laugh as he turns away then back to
SMASH.
Zack punches Neil knocking him to the ground.
ZACK

CLOSE UP of Shane whos face is covered in animal blood and
chunks. His eyes widen as he lets out a SCREAM.
Shane begins to HYPERVENTILATE and GAG as he stares down at
a rotting fox corpse. Its body slit open releasing a
stench like no other. Shane lets out another SCREAM.

INT. DR. HAWKS OFFICE - LATER
Neil stands at the door holding a handkerchief to his
bleeding lip. Keith stands beside him, arms crossed.
DR. HAWK (O.S.)
Seriously guys?
Zack, Beck and Valerie are sitting in front of Dr. Hawk once
more. Dr. Hawk paces in front of them back and forth.
DR. HAWK
Its been less than twenty-four
hours. Seriously?
The Orderlies at the door step aside as Wes ENTERS and
stands at attention.
WES
Dr. Hawk. Shanes been
sedated. Hes now sleeping it off
in his room.
DR. HAWK
Thank you Wes. Ill check on him

(to Beck, Valerie and Zack)
As for you three consider your
ground privileges gone. I dont

and Keith. Neil nudges Zack, who ignores Neil, and keeps
walking. Zack turns his head to the left and stares at a
heavy door, THE BOX.

Zack slides up to sit, and realizes where he is. He stands
and looks at the old wood doors to the OLD CHURCH.
Behind Zack is a SHUFFLE.

ZACK
(surprised)
Youre dead.
The young girl places her finger to her lips and HUSHES
Zack. Taking the same finger, she turns and points behind
her to the altar.
In front of the altar is a cloaked man, kneeling. Zack
stares back at the girl who steps aside and Zack walks past
her.
As Zack approaches the altar, the cloaked figure begins to
HUM.
ON two small legs that stick out from in front of the
cloaked figure.
Zack slows down when he is a few feet from the figure.
begins to step lightly.
The cloaked man stops HUMMING.

He

Zack stops, frozen in fear.

OVER THE SHOULDER of the cloaked man lies a five-year old


Zack, sliced opened, rib cage exposed, dead.
Zack GASPS as the cloaked man turns around.
THE BOOGEYMAN
His amber eyes glow from the depth of their sockets. His
red flesh contorts over the unusual crevasses of his
face. His fangs a filthy yellow. Its safe to say this man
is a monster in every sense of the word.
THE BOOGEYMAN
(deep, dark)
Hes mine.
INT. DORM HALL - LATE AFTERNOON
CLOSE UP of Zacks eye.

His pupil expands then retracts

He pushes himself back from the door with so much force that
he SMACKS into Neil. Neil shoves Zack, who swings around.
NEIL
You got a problem?
Zack shakes his head, still visibly startled.

ZACK
(confused)
No.
They continue to walk down the hall, all the while Zacks
eyes remain transfixed on the door.
INT. VALERIES INSTITUTION BEDROOM - NIGHT
An underwear wearing Valerie stands in front of a
vanity. The vanity mirror covered with a blanket.
She rubs her right hand hard and GRINDS her teeth slightly
before pulling the blanket from the mirror.
She stares at herself. Valerie presses in her stomach with
her hands, and turns to the side.
She lifts her arm and grabs the skin underneath. She lowers
her arms and faces forward again, SIGHING loudly.
NEIL (O.S.)
Lights out.
All the lights go out. Valerie picks up the blanket and
throws it over the mirror.
KNOCK.
Valerie grabs a robe thats draped over her bed.
VALERIE
One minute.
She ties the robe around herself and walks to the door. She
opens it revealing Neil, who leans smugly on the door frame.
VALERIE
What do you want Neil?
NEIL
Just checking up on you. Because
of the shenanigans you pulled last
night, I get the task of keeping a
close eye on you. And so far I
like what I see.
Neil eyes Valerie up and down and attempts to move the robe
with his fingers.

VALERIE
Not even if you were the last skeez
on Earth. Dream on dick.
She pushes his hand, and him, out the door as she SLAMS the
door. She shakes her head and walks away from the door.
INT. DORM HALL - SAME
Neil runs his hands through his hair in frustration. He
turns away and then back to the door, as if he were going to
burst through it. Changing his mind, Neil turns around and
storms off.
INT. ZACKS INSTITUTION BEDROOM - SAME
In the dark Zack stares through the bars out the window.

ZACK
(whispers)
I know youre out there,
somewhere. What are you waiting
for?
Zack waits a beat for a response. NOTHING. He turns from
the window, walks to his bed and gets under the
covers. Zack turns over and drifts to sleep.
PANNING the room and OUT the window a cloaked figure stands
in the yard, scythe in hand, staring up at Zacks window.
INT. DR. HAWKS OFFICE - MIDNIGHT
Dr. Hawk sits at her desk reading a file folder.

Neil looks down at the slumbering, vulnerable Valerie.


He lifts the blanket at her feet and places his hand,
slowly, on her leg. Valerie adjusts causing Neil to
freeze. She doesnt waken. He continues to move his hand
up her leg.
A CREAK in the corner of the room startles Neil, he turns
around. A GROWL whispers from the corner.
He stops what hes doing and steps closer and into the
shadows.
A beat.
Neil emerges from the shadow and walks back to the bed.
blanket is now back over Valeries legs. A noticeably
confused Neil turns around and is still ALONE.

The

UNDER THE BED P.O.V. - Neil shuffles around, exposing the


back of his ankles.
FROM ABOVE Neil continues to look around. Valerie is still
asleep. A scythe blade swings out from under the bed
slicing the back of Neils ankles, blood SPLATTERS.
Neil falls to his knees and opens his mouth to SCREAM.
NEILS P.O.V. - The scythe blade plunges toward his face.
INT. DR. HAWKS OFFICE - SAME
"Seven Devils" by Florence + the Machine begins to play on
the SOUNDTRACK.
Dr. Hawk is still browsing through Tylers file.

Dr. Hawk picks up the phone, on her right, and dials a
number. She shoves the phone between her ear and shoulder,
then picks up a pack of cigarettes.
She sticks a cigarette in her mouth and lights it. She
INHALES and EXHALES quickly as a voice MUMBLES on the other
line.
NIGHT NURSE (V.O.)
Good evening, Ivy Lawrence.

Hello. This is Dr. Hawk calling
from St. Francis Psychiatric
Hospital. Im calling in regards
to a patients status.
NIGHT NURSE (V.O.)
Im sorry its after midnight all
the doctors have gone home for the
evening.

Yes, I do realize the time, and I
apologize, but this is just an
inquiry of a patient that was
transferred last night, Tyler Ore.
NIGHT NURSE (V.O.)
Im sorry, Doctor. No patient was

DR. HAWK
Um, are you sure? Could you
possibly check your records?

A confused Dr. Hawk hangs up the phone and takes another
DRAG of her cigarette all the while staring down at the page
in front of her.
INT. VALERIES INSTITUTION BEDROOM - SAME
SOUNDTRACK continues.
FROM ABOVE Valerie sleeps.

ON Valeries face. A red drop SPLASHES on her cheek. She


moves slightly but doesnt wake. Another drop SPLASHES her
cheek once more this time awakening her.
She rubs her cheek and looks at the blood on her hand.

ON the ceiling, Neil hangs, crucified.

His mouth is slit open, ear to ear. Tears roll down his
cheeks. Blood GARGLES from his mouth as he tries to speak.
VALERIE
(out of breath)
Neil?
Valerie SCREAMS out as she throws back the covers. She
leaps out of bed, slides on a pool of blood and CRASHES to
the floor.
From the shadows the Boogeyman walks out. Underneath his
cloak he pulls out his scythe and charges at Valerie.
She scrambles to her feet and dodges under the monsters
attack. She falls into the door, turns the handle and
escapes the room.
INT. DORM HALL - SAME
SOUNDTRACK continues.
Valerie trips out of the door, hitting the wall across the
way. She scrambles to find her footing, as she darts down
the hall.
OVER THE SHOULDER The Boogeyman crawls out of the room, his
limbs contorted unnaturally and head skewed to the
side. His hood is off, exposing his grotesque
features. His body CREAKS and CRACKS with every movement.
Valerie looks back, and SQUEALS as she rounds the corner
into the COMMON AREA.
INT. COMMON AREA - SAME
SOUNDTRACK continues.
A GROWL echoes from behind Valerie as she trips, hitting the
ground hard.

THUD.
She GROANS and swims on the ground as she tries to grip
herself to stand up. When she makes it to her feet the
light behind her begins to fade into darkness.
She makes her way to the NURSES STATION and tries the door.
Its locked.
Valerie BANGS, both her fists, with all her strength.
VALERIE
(yells)
Somebody please. Help me.
in, anybody. Please.
Her cries echo throughout the halls.

Dr. Hawk looks behind Valerie into an empty COMMON
AREA. She HUSHES Valerie as she strokes her hair.
DR. HAWK
Theres nothing out there.
VALERIE
(sobbing)
There is. I saw it. It killed
Neil.
(yells)
Strung him up like the second
coming of Christ for fucks sake.
She pushes herself away from Dr. Hawk, and wipes the tears
from her eyes.
DR. HAWK
It was probably a bad dream.

Dr. Hawk ENTERS the room, clean, no sign of blood. She
walks the entirety of the room. Valerie stands at the
doorway shell-shocked.
VALERIE
I swear there was something
here. It killed Neil. He was
draped up there. Im not making
this shit up. Honestly.
DR. HAWK
Its okay. Dreams can seem
real. Sometimes our imaginations
get the better of us.
VALERIE
Oh come on, Aubrey, look at
me. Does this gore show look like
some goddamn delusion?
Valerie looks down and she is spotless. No trace of
blood. She shakes her head and runs her fingers through her
hair, gripping it and almost ripping it out.

VALERIE
This cant be happening.
Relax.

DR. HAWK
Here.

Dr. Hawk wraps an arm around Valerie and walks her to the
bed. She lifts up the covers, and Valerie gets in.
She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a bottle. She
hands Valerie two pills and a glass of water, from Valeries
nightstand.
Valerie swallows them as Dr. Hawk brushes her hair back.
DR. HAWK
These should help you sleep.
VALERIE
Im sorry.
Its okay.

DR. HAWK
Get some rest.

Dr. Hawk leaves the room, shutting the door behind


her. Valerie takes a deep BREATH, and sinks down under her
covers.
SOUNDTRACK continues.
ON Valerie as a HISS erupts from the shadows of the
room. Her eyes widen with fear.
She pulls the blanket over her head and panics as her
BREATHING rapids.
VALERIE
(whispers)
Its not real. Its all in your
head. Theres nothing there. Calm
down. Calm the fuck down.
A CREAK on the floor, and Valerie falls silent for a beat.
WHOOSH.
IN A FLASH -- The blanket flies off Valeries body, and the
blade of the scythe plunges deep into her gut.
Valeries mouth jerks open and tears fall from her eyes.

ON Valeries face. The Boogeyman leans in close. He


shushes Valerie then opens his mouth. His brown leather
tongue licks the side of her head. She begins to cry
uncontrollably.
FOOT OF THE BED P.O.V. - The scythe blade slices Valerie
down the middle. Her legs snapping open to either side of
the bed. Her innards spill out, blood SPLATTERS the walls.
FROM ABOVE Valerie lies open, exposed, and very much alone.
ON the wall, above her bed, in blood is written
THE SECOND.
INT. ZACKS INSTITUTION BEDROOM - SAME
A sleeping Zack JOLTS up in bed. He runs his hands through
his sweaty hair taking a deep BREATH.
He grabs a glass of water from his nightstand and takes a
sip.
The young girl, from the old church, stands at the
doorway. Zack meets the girls eyes before she walks away.
He gets out of bed, walks to the door and looks out.
INT. DORM HALL - SAME
ON the doorway.

Zack peers around the frame.

The young girl stares at Zack, as she rounds the corner into
the COMMON AREA.
Zack looks both ways before EXITING the room and shuffling
down the hall.
INT. COMMON AREA - SAME
The young girl slips into the "PERSONNEL ONLY" CLOSET.
sneaks along the wall and follows her inside.

INT. BASEMENT HALLWAYS - SAME


Zack walks the corridors of the basement. They twist and
turn, and seem to go on forever. As fast as Zack walks he
is always behind the young girl.
Every corridor looks the same. Doors, with giant, dirty
glass windows, line the walls on either side.
Cobwebs spread out among the corners where ceiling meets
wall. These halls havent been walked down in a very long
time.
Around the next corner Zack finds himself in front of a wall
of renovation plastic that hangs from a beam just below the
ceiling.
Through the plastic the young girl stands facing Zack.
facial features distorted.

Her

ON Zacks hand. He reaches for the slight opening in the


plastic. He grips it firmly and opens.
Nothing.

The young girl is gone.

Zack goes to turn but something on the ground catches his


eye.
A bloodied childs shoe.
He reaches down, and as he touches it
BANG.
A noise down at the end of the dark corridor causes Zack to
jump. He looks around, then cautiously walks towards the
ruckus. When he gets to the end he stops and stares in
disbelief.
Two large, heavy cedar doors stand boarded up. Their frames
are chiseled with images of people reaching up to the sky in
agony as flames engulf them. On either door hangs two
bronze crosses, one unhinged and inverted.
A light escapes through the crack between the two
doors. Zack kneels down, closing one eye, and peeking
through the crack with the other.
ZACKS P.O.V. - Lit candles surround the walls of an old
chapel. The appearance is very reminiscent of the OLD
CHURCH circa 1996. Down the middle aisle, between the pews,
is a cloaked figure kneeling in front of a ten foot inverted
cross.

OVER Zacks shoulder, in the distance, the young girl runs


past giggling.
Zack turns around to come face to face with the young
girl. He jumps back hitting the doors with a THUD.
YOUNG GIRL
(whispers)
Shh. Do you want him to hear us?
ZACK
(whispers)
Who is he?
YOUNG GIRL
(whispers)
You know who he is. Hes been here
a long time. Waiting.
ZACK
(whispers)
For what?
YOUNG GIRL
(whispers)

The young girl backs up slowly then takes off into the

INT. DR. HAWKS OFFICE - LATER
Zack sits in a chair in front of Dr. Hawks desk. Dr. Hawk
stands at a coffee machine, she pours herself a cup.

Would you like a cup?
Zack declines with a shake of his head. Dr. Hawk takes a
SIP and walks over to the other side of her desk. She takes
a seat.
DR. HAWK
Tell me about him.
ZACK
Im sorry. What?
She opens up her desk drawer, removing a file and sliding it
on the desk to Zack. Zack opens up the file to see his
medical files, and newspaper clippings from his room.
ZACK
You wouldnt understand.
DR. HAWK
Try me.
ZACK
I saw him.
DR. HAWK
Hes dead.
ZACK
I dont think you understand. I
saw him in the basement. In that
boarded up chapel.
DR. HAWK
Theres no chapel in the basement.
ZACK

I saw you sneak out of your

Zack shakes his head, and turns to the window before
snapping back to Dr. Hawk.

sounds, and if I were in your

that shouldnt be real, but are.
DR. HAWK
Its completely understandable to

Dr. Hawk stands and walks over to a book case on the other
side of the room. She removes a book from the shelf and
flips through it.
She comes back to the desk, and places it down, opened, for
Zack to see.
The book is actually a scrapbook, and on the open page is a
newspaper clipping. A photo of a younger Dr. Hawk, 16,
walking out of a courthouse. Above the photo the headline

Dr. Hawk grabs a cigarette from her desk and lights it. She
walks over to the unbarred window, UNLATCHES it, and opens
it a crack. She walks back to the desk and has a seat.

first scream. At first I thought I
was hearing things. Maybe the
wind. I decided to go upstairs and
check on Janet, who was sound
asleep.
Dr. Hawk INHALES the cigarette and EXHALES. She flicks its
ashes into a green ashtray that sits in her desk drawer.
DR. HAWK
I heard a second scream, and looked
out her bedroom window to see if I
could see where it was coming
from. Down the road there was an
abandoned church. Lights flickered
through the broken windows. It was
quiet for a few minutes but then a
third scream rang out. I
hysterically called 911. I was so
terrified.
Zack stares down at the article and then back to Dr. Hawk.
DR. HAWK
I watched as the police showed up
and confronted Father Hollow. I
also watched in horror as one of
them killed him not more than ten
yards from my back porch. All the
while he was staring up at me. So
you see Zack, there is no way
Father Hollow is here. I watched
him die.
Zack watches a chain-smoking Dr. Hawk for a beat.

cigarette. She puts it out in the ashtray and SHUTS the
desk drawer.

Ill be right back.

She makes her way over to the door and opens it. An older
man with gray hair stands behind the door, DR.
GOLDSTEIN. His crooked glasses sit upon his slender
nose. His hair messed as if he just got out of bed.
Dr. Hawk walks into the NURSES STATION, shutting the door
behind her. Zack stares down at the newspaper clipping.
INT. NURSES STATION - SAME
DR. GOLDSTEIN
Dr. Hawk, whats so important that
it couldnt wait until
morning? Please tell me you have a
good reason for dragging me out of
bed at this time of night.
DR. HAWK
Dr. Goldstein, I need to know what
really happened to a patient by the
name of Tyler Ore.
DR. GOLDSTEIN
Who?
DR. HAWK
Tyler Ore. Severe Bipolar
Disorder? You signed off on his
transfer last night?
Dr. Goldstein removes his glasses and cleans them with his
shirt. He places them back on, shrugs and shakes his head
in confusion.
DR. HAWK
His medical release form has your
signature on it, sir. I called the
facility but they never received,
nor heard of the patient.
DR. GOLDSTEIN
Dr. Hawk, I guarantee I have no
clue as to what you speak of.

A frustrated Dr. Hawk grabs a file folder from the Nurses


desk and hands it to Dr. Goldstein. He opens up the folder,
and then stares at Dr. Hawk.
DR. GOLDSTEIN
(sternly)
Is this your idea of a joke, Dr.
Hawk?
DR. HAWK
Sir?
He turns the folder around to face Dr. Hawk.

The room is completely empty. The window is now fully
open. The sheers blow in the breeze.

EXT. ST. FRANCIS PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTION - SAME
Zack nudges along the narrow ledge surrounding the building,
gripping the wall as he goes. He passes by barred window
after barred window.
ZACK
(breathless)
Eight.

He stops and grips the bars that shields one of the
windows. Sticking his fingers through the grid spaces he
taps lightly on the window.
TAP. TAP. TAP.
No response. He TAPS again, this time the tinted window
opens. Beck stares at Zack.
BECK
What are you doing?
ZACK
Beck get your stuff
together. Were getting out of
here. You, me, and
Shane. Tonight.

BECK
Are you high?

ZACK
No Im serious. The Boogeyman is
here. I have reason to believe
hes killed Tyler and Valerie.
BECK
Theyre dead? How do you know?
ZACK
(annoyed)
I dont know. I just do. Now get
ready, get Shane and meet me in the
basement. Its the only place, in
this building, besides the Docs
office, that doesnt have bars on
the windows.
(beat)

BECK

He looks back up at Beck.

ZACKS P.O.V. - His eyes, blurred, flutter in and out of
consciousness.

Zack, wake up.

Get up.

ON Zacks closed eyes that open. Beck stands over him,


concern stretched across her face.

Youre alive. How did you escape?

Zack looks down at his hand that is still bleeding.

Believe it or not, a lot better
than my head. Wheres Shane?
Beck rips a piece of her shirt, wraps and ties it tightly
around Zacks wound. Zack squints as he tries to focus.

going to stop until hes killed

Beck steadys Zack as he attempts to get to his feet. The
two share a look of understanding before taking off towards
the basement windows.

MONTAGE
-- Outside, the blood moon shines menacingly behind the
building.
-- The NURSES STATION is empty.
-- The BASEMENT is empty.
-- The COMMON AREA is empty.
-- The DORM HALL is empty as Zack and Beck walk slowly into
the darkness.
ZACK
Where is everyone? Youd think a
patient escaping, and a killer on
the loose would be cause for alarm.
Zack stops suddenly pushing Beck up against the wall and
placing a hand on her mouth.

Footsteps in the distance fade and Zack releases Beck.
BECK
I doubt Hollow wears heels.
The two continue to walk.
ZACK
No, but the Doc does. We get
caught and were in lock down just
waiting for The Boogeyman to show

They stop in front of a single door.

Zack places a hand, slowly, on the edge of the covers. He
exchanges a look with Beck before drawing back the blanket.
SCREAM.
Shane lets out an ear-piercing SCREAM as he scrambles out
of the bed, falling flat on the floor. Beck rushes to his
side to help him up as Shane HEAVES with every breath.
ZACK
Im sorry, I didnt mean to scare
you.
SHANE
Im sorry, I thought you were him.

ZACK
The Boogeyman?

Shanes brow creases as he stares up at Zack.


SHANE
No, Tyler. Hes dead, I think, but
hes still here walking around,
showing me things. Like Valerie.

INT. SHANES INSTITUTION BEDROOM - EARLIER
Shane wakes up slowly. He reaches for a glass of water on
his nightstand. He turns towards the door where Tyler
stands, still dead. The glass slips out of Shanes hand and
smashes on the floor.
SHANE (V.O.)
I woke up in my room and Tyler was
there like he was in the
forest. He told me to follow him,
that I needed to see something, and
so I did.
INT. DORM HALL - EARLIER
Shane follows Tyler down the DORM HALL.
Tyler leaves behind a bloody footprint.

He took me to Valeries room.
Hawk was just leaving.

I walked to the window and peered
inside. Reluctantly of course.
ZACK (V.O.)

SHANE (V.O.)
Something came out of nowhere,
somewhere, the shadows. Whoever he
was, he killed her. Split her in
half. I couldnt move, there was
so much blood.

Shane looks through the window in horror as the scythe pulls


back slicing Valerie in half. The Boogyeman places a finger
in her blood and starts to write on the wall. He stops and
turns to face Shane.
SHANE (V.O.)
He saw me, so I ran.
INT. SHANES INSTITUTION BEDROOM - AFTER MIDNIGHT
Shane sits on the floor, his arms wrapped firmly around his
knees.
SHANE
Why am I seeing these things? I
dont want to see these
things. Dead things. Its not
natural. Please make them stop.
ZACK
Wait. Are you seeing something
right now?
Shane looks up to Zack.
ON Zack. Tyler stands behind him.

car over beige carpet. They sit cross legged. Looking up a
young boy smiles as he laughs and continues to play with the
car.
ZACK
A toy?
SHANE
Its more than a toy. It was a
gift. A majority of people find a
sense of strength in things from
their childhood, mine just so
happens to be a Hot Wheels.
ZACK
Okay.

Zack shakes his head, as Shane walks towards the door.

He kicks the door, and pulls the handle towards him

Zack holds the door handle, twisting with all his might.

He SLAMS his shoulder into the door. Hitting it again and


again. He stops to look at Beck, who stares blankly.
ZACK
Are you going to stand there or
help me? We have to get him out of

ZACK (O.S.)
Shane. Stand back. Im gonna try

Zack REALLY sees the Boogeymans face for the first time.
The reptilian texture of his red skin glistens. His amber
eyes glow from their sunk-in position, deep within the
Boogeymans skull. His lips purse exposing a devilish grin
of yellow and brown.
Shanes struggle begins to weaken. As Zack musters up
enough courage to run at the Boogeyman.
ZACK
(yells)
Shane.
The Boogeyman stumbles back on impact.
Shane HITS the ground hard.

His grip loosens and

Zack grabs Shanes arm helping him to his feet. He pushes


him towards Beck, and Beck ushers Shane out of the room.
She stands looking back at Zack who is once again, frozen
with fear, as the Boogeyman gains composure.

Zack snaps out of it, and backs up quickly to the door.
Boogeyman flicks his head to Zack, and glares.

They look behind them as the cloaked figure walks briskly
from the room, and towards the trio.

ZACK
He used to be a psychotic priest.

Valerie. He almost got Shane, and
if we dont get the fuck out of
here, we are going to be next.
Dr. Hawk walks backwards slowly as she reaches into her
white coat pocket.

She removes a small syringe.

Zack stares down at the syringe then back at Dr. Hawk.


ZACK
Youve got to be fucking kidding

DR. HAWK
Zack. I think you should come with
me. To my office. Well discuss

ZACK

SQRUNCH.
Dr. Hawk WINCES in pain as she stares down at the end of the
scythe thats protruding through her chest. She looks back
up, in surprise, at Zack.
Zack GASPS as Dr. Hawk is lifted high into the air, and
flung across the COMMON AREA floor.
He turns back in fear. The Boogeyman backhands him, sending
Zack flying and CRASHING through the "PERSONNEL ONLY" CLOSET
door.
ON Dr. Hawk. She turns her head partially, enough for a
glimpse at the monster stalking her from behind.

She CRIES out, as she faces forward, and tries to claw
herself along the floor.
FROM ABOVE Dr. Hawks blood smears behind her as she drags
her body along the floor.
The Boogeyman walks around Dr. Hawk, blocking her way.
looks up to him in horror.
A grin is spread smugly across his face.

His smile disappears as he swings the weapon, landing it
deep within her skull.
ON Dr. Hawks head. Blood runs down her face for a

nowhere to be seen.
He GRUNTS as he reaches down, grabbing Dr. Hawks corpse by
the scuff of her neck. He pulls her back, causing her body
to fold backwards, CRUNCH, and slide along with him.
INT. BASEMENT HALLWAYS - SAME
"In the Dark" by Flyleaf begins to play on the SOUNDTRACK.
Shane and Beck wander down the dank, empty corridors.
Doors with large glass windows line either side of the
hall. Shane is shaking uncontrollably.
SHANE
We should go back. What if he
needs our help?... What if hes
dead. We should of stayed and
helped him.
BECK
Zack will be fine.

SHANES P.O.V. - The room is filled with childrens desks,


some upright, others knocked over. Windows line the
opposite wall several feet up.
ON Shane. His hands and face pressed up against the glass
as he stares into the dark room. PULL BACK to reveal a cork
board. Childrens paintings, of angels, religious figures
and symbols, are tacked together like a mosaic of color.
A Sunday School room.
SHANE
Theres windows right there. No
bars. We could pull those desk
over to them and get out, no
problem.
(beat)
Beck?
Shane turns from the door, to an empty corridor.
SHANE
Beck?
(beat)
Great.
Theres a CREAK, in the darkness, at the end of the
hall. Shane looks around before slowly making his way in
that direction.
SHANE
Beck? Beck is that you?

he turns around and ends up face to face with the Boogeyman.

Oh, shit.
The Boogeyman slashes the scythe at Shane, who dives to the
ground, sliding out of the way.
The Boogeyman turns to attack again as Shane stumbles to his
feet and breaks out in a run, the Boogeyman in slow pursuit.
Shane looks over his shoulder several times. He turns
sharply down a side corridor, nearly body-checking the
opposite wall.
A few doors to the left stands the young girl.
at Shane and waves him into the room.

She smiles

Shane looks over his shoulder again, before rushing into the
room. He shuts the door QUIETLY behind him.
INT. SUNDAY SCHOOL ROOM - SAME

He squats in front of the door, then looks around the
room. The girl has vanished. He swallows hard.
His eyes look up to the window above the door. The
Boogeyman, head tilted, stares into the dark room.
The Boogeyman turns and leaves, and Shane lets out a SIGH of
relief. He stands up and once again looks around the room.
SHANE
(whispers)
Little girl? Hes gone.

raised. Behind Shane the door slowly opens by itself.

Shane swings around to an empty room.

The desk underneath him shifts and CRASHES to the
floor. Shane dangles for a beat before falling to the floor
with a THUD.
From the ground Shane looks up, and into the golden eyes of
death, The Boogeyman. He GASPS.
BLACK OUT.

INT. BASEMENT HALLWAYS - SAME


ON Zack. With a pool cue in hand, he limps briskly.
free arm wrapped around his ribs.

ZACK
Shane? Beck? Guys, where are you?
FROM BEHIND Beck stares as she walks past and down another
corridor.
Zack spins around, and catches her tail-end walking.
Beck?

ZACK
Where are you going?

He moves as quickly as he is able to, and turns down the


corridor. He stops suddenly.
At the end of the hall, Beck looks up as she ENTERS two
large cedar doors, the OLD CHURCH. Zack grips the pool cue
tightly and walks with determination towards the doors.
INT. OLD CHURCH - SAME
ON the doors.

One opens partially and Zack slips inside.

Shadows and lights waltz around the walls. The room filled
with candles that continue to melt as the wicks burn
down. Cobwebs drape from the rafters.
Some of the stain glass windows are broken and grungy with
age. The images are not your typical religious figures.
-- People burn in fire as they reach up to the skies.
-- Demons sit on a mutilated carcass eating their entrails.
A large, inverted, bronze cross hangs at the foot of the
altar. Zack stops and his eyes widen.
ON the cross. Shane hangs shirtless, bloody, gagged and
upside down. His arms and legs bound tightly, to the cross,
with ropes that tear at his flesh. His chest filled with a
dozen or so shallow cuts.
ON Shane. Tears flow down his forehead, his chest HEAVES
with every breath.
Zack drops the pool cue and runs towards Shane.

ZACK
What did he do to you?
Zack fidgets with the ropes around Shanes left arm.
Shane grunts.

As

ZACK
Hold on bud, Ill get you
down. Just hold on.
Shane grunts again. Zack finishes untying Shanes
hand. Shanes now free hand attempts to pull the gag off to
no avail.
Zack, whos busy with the other arm, stops and squats to
remove Shanes gag. Shane GRUNTS again.
ZACK
What is it? Talk to me.
CLOSE UP of Shane and Zack. Zack removes the gag and Shane
goes to speak. Blood gushes from inside and Zack falls
backwards with surprise.
ON Shanes mouth.

All that remains of his tongue is a stub.

ZACK
(gasp)
Holy shit. Hold on Ill get you
down. Just dont panic.
Zack crawls to his feet and grabs the gag.
Shanes mouth.

He places it in

ZACK
Hold this while I untie the other
ropes. Were gonna get out of
here.
Shane lifts his loose hand and points behind Zack.
twitching in fear.

Zack turns as the Boogeyman unleashes the scythe, from his


hands, and it barrels through the air towards him.
IN SLOW MOTION Zack turns sharply as the blade slides
centimeters from his face. The breeze flows through Zacks
hair as he closes his eyes.
The scythe plunges deep into Shanes gut.
widen, as Shane panics and HEAVES.

A backhand sends Zack flying through the pews and crashing


hard against a pillar knocking him out cold.

The Boogeyman turns his attentions from Zack to Shane. He


walks casually to Shane, who attempts to SCREAM releasing
only but a WHIMPER.
The Boogeymans head tilts as he grips the scythe, from deep
within Shanes belly, tearing it out, and ripping the flesh.
Shanes innards spill out SPLASHING on the cobblestone
floor. Shanes body SMACKS back against the cross and goes
limp.
The Boogeyman slides his grotesque hand around the blade
removing the blood. He licks the tips of his fingers then
proceeds to run his hands over his face.
ON Zack. He begins to regain consciousness and realizes he
is being dragged.
His eyes flutter as he looks up at Beck. She pulls him
behind the pillar, and leans him up against it.
ZACK
Beck?
BECK
(whispers)
Shh. Be quiet. Do you want him to
hear us. Listen to me carefully
Zack. We need to get out of here.
ZACK
Shanes dead.
BECK
I know. Its sad, but focus.
(beat)
We have to stop him. Its the only
way out. Do you understand?

No.

ZACK
(hysterical)
No, I dont understand.

BECK
(calmly)
We need to get out. I need to get
out. And sending that son of a
bitch straight to hell is the only
way to do it. Will you help me?
Zack nods, pulling himself up. He turns back to Beck who is
gone. Zack attempts to stand as Beck SCREAMS out. His eyes
widen.

86.

He jumps to his feet with new found strength and steps


around the pillar.
The Boogeyman holds Beck in the air by her neck. His eyes
pierce Zack with disdain. He releases Beck who falls to the
floor.
Zack walks through the pews. He goes through the center
aisle, reaches down and picks up the pool cue. He grips it
tightly.
Zack runs at the Boogeyman. He SCREAMS a warriors
cry. The Boogeyman swings the scythe down at Zack. Zack
grabs the pool cue with both hands blocking the attack.
He kicks the Boogeyman in the stomach. The Boogeyman
staggers back from impact allowing Zack ample time to swing
the wooden weapon nailing him in the jaw.
The Boogeyman slices his blade with force, hooking it deep
into Zacks shoulder. Zack CRIES OUT in agony.
The Boogeyman rips the blade out and lets out a thunderous
LAUGH. Zack loses his footing and buckles to his knees.
His body withers in pain as the Boogeymans focus shifts to
Beck who stands stoic behind him. Zack stares up with
rage.
He grabs the pool cue and swings it, hitting the scythe,
knocking it out of the Boogeymans hands.
Zack scrambles to get the metal weapon but the Boogeyman
grabs him by the throat. He launches Zack into the church
doors at the far end of the room. Zack collapses to the
floor.
He looks to his blood soaked shoulder, then up to the
Boogeyman.
ZACK
Is that the best you got, bitch.
CLOSE UP of the Boogeyman.
louder into a full GROWL.

His lips purse as a HUFF grows

ON the Boogeyman. He disrobes exposing two massive bat-like


wings. The cloak sways to the floor. He lets out a HOWL
that echoes off the walls, and shatters every window.
Zack manages to get to his feet in time for the Boogeyman to
clutch his monstrous hand around his neck.

87.

The Boogeyman pushes off the ground flying them both high
into the air.
Zack GASPS for air as he struggles to break free. The
Boogeymans talon-like nails digging deep into the sensitive
flesh.
From the ground Beck wraps the pool cue in the cloth of her
shirt. She ties it tightly and places it over a
candle. The cloth ignites almost immediately.
BECK
(yells)
Hollow.
The Boogeyman looks down at Beck.
BECK
We both know how this is supposed
to go. Hes not the one you
want. What are you waiting for an
invitation?
In desperation Zack reaches through a distracted Boogeymans
arms and jabs his thumbs deep into his amber eyes.
The Boogeyman HOWLS and lets go of Zack who hits the ground
with a THUD.
Zack scurries to the scythe as the Boogeyman shakes off the
assault.
The Boogeyman swoops in towards Zack, who swings the weapon,
missing the Boogeyman. The monster launches himself at
Beck.
She swings the makeshift torch at the beast, who dodges
left. She turns around to swing again.
The torch lands in the Boogeymans hands. He snaps it in
half and approaches Beck. She steps backwards slowly from
the monster.
ON the torch. It rolls on the ground, hitting the fabric of
the altar drape. The drape erupts in flames. The fire
spreading quickly throughout the room.
Beck stops walking, and turns to face Zack.
BECK
Save yourself.

Save us.

88.

ZACK
(yells)
Beck?
The Boogeymans fist breaks through Becks chest. Her body
jerks as the Boogeyman removes his fist. She drops to the
ground.
The Boogeyman turns and walks to the fiery altar. Zack runs
to Beck sliding to his knees. He lifts her on his lap.
ZACK
No, no, no. Beck. Get up. You
cant die. Were going to get out
of here, together.
CLOSE UP of Becks glazed eyes.

Dead.

He lowers her head to the ground softly.


transfixed on her for a beat.
The ground begins to RUMBLE around him.
back to reality as he looks around.

Zacks fingers close

The Boogeyman stands several feet in front of the inverted


cross, eyes closed. The ground continues to RUMBLE.
He turns around to face Zack.

He lets out a HOWL that

Chunks of plaster and wood fall from the ceiling. A giant


crack slithers along the floor. The tremors increase as the
ground between the enemies open up.
SCREAMS echo from the cavern.

Zacks cold eyes light up with the sensual dance of the


fire. He stands to his feet, blade in hand.
ZACK
Lets finish this.
THE BOOGEYMAN
Mine.
ZACK
Come and get it.
The Boogeyman launches at Zack, who swings the scythe,
landing a blow to the beasts right arm. The Boogeyman
CRIES OUT on impact.

He flies into the air, staring down at Zack with contempt.


ZACK
(yells)
You like that. Theres plenty more
where that came from.
He dives down again, but before Zack can swing hes grabbed
by both of his arms and lifted into the air.
The two twirl around high above the ground, and the fiery
pit. The ground continues to rock, as the cavern grows
larger.
ON the inverted cross. It moves back and forth before
falling forward into the abyss, Shane along with it.
Zack struggles under the grip with little success. An
opportunity presents itself when the Boogeyman lifts his arm
to slash Zack.
Zack holds the scythe firmly as he strikes it deep into the
Boogeymans chest.
ZACK
Go to hell, you son of a bitch.
He rips it out with no remorse. The Boogeymans eyes widen
as Zack plunges the blade into his chest again.
The two rocket towards the ground. Zack manages to tear the
blade free while pushing off the Boogeyman.
Zack hits the ground sliding towards the church doors.
Boogeyman drops down into the fiery unknown.

The

Zack scrambles to distance himself further from the hole, as


giant flames burst from within. SCREECHES of torment escape
the chasm as the flames subside into blackness.
Zack releases the scythe which CLANGS on the floor. He lies
his head back to the cobblestone floor, letting out a long
BREATH for a beat.
IN A FLASH -- The monsters hand grips Zacks ankle.
The Boogeyman struggles to claw his way out of the abyss
while dragging Zack towards him.
Zacks arms flail in every direction attempting to grasp
anything to stop his descent into hell.
ON the scythe that lies within inches of Zacks finger tips.

90.

Zack notices the weapon and flicks the handle with his
finger tips. He keeps reaching, and reaching until hes
able to grip his savior.
He stops resisting as The Boogeyman drags him face to face.
ZACK
(yells)
Im not afraid of you mother
fucker. Now stay dead.
He swings the scythe cutting the Boogeymans head clean
off. The head rolls along the ground before plummeting into
the hole. Zack kicks the Boogeymans heavy body into the
pit.
A great flame explodes from the hole, as Zack takes the
fetal position to avoid being burned. As quickly as the
flame comes its gone.
"Creep" by Tom Ugly begins to play on the SOUNDTRACK.
Zack stretches back out as blood continues to flow profusely
from the forgotten shoulder wound. With the adrenaline
gone, the full extent of Zacks injuries begin to take a
toll.
His BREATH slows into
stomach, chest to his
pulling out the small
closes his eyes for a

hard HEAVES. His hand runs up his


neck. He reaches under his collar
gold cross. He holds it tightly and
beat.

A bright light shines through one of the broken windows, and


stretches across Zacks face. Zack opens his eyes to see
Beck smiling above him.
BECK
You did it. You freed us.
Zack looks up and past Beck to three small children shrouded
in shadows, their features hidden. He looks back to Beck
who is now the young girl from the church.
She smiles warmly as she reaches her small hand down to
Zack. He releases the gold chain and reaches up to the
young girl.

91.
INT. APARTMENT BUILDING HALL - DAY
SOUNDTRACK continues.
ON a pair of shiny black shoes, and black pants as they walk
down a hallway.
An elderly woman in a pink silk nightgown is talking to an
officer in front of an open doorway. The officer writing
everything down in a small book.
TILTING UP as the shoes get closer, to the open doorway, we
see the shoes belong to an older, badge wearing "SHERIFF"
Jeffrey Cooke. He nods to a passing officer who leaves the
room.
Sheriff Cooke removes his hat and takes a deep breath before
ENTERING.
INT. ZACKS APARTMENT - SAME
SOUNDTRACK continues.
As Sheriff Cooke ENTERS a flash from a forensics camera
lights the room briefly.
The Sheriff shakes his head in disappointment as he
approaches the cause of all the commotion.
CLOSE UP of Zacks face for a beat. His head is angled and
eyes are glossed over as a rope digs tightly into the flesh
of his neck.
CUT TO Zack as he hangs, swaying, slightly, side-to-side.
Tilting down his dangling corpse we stop, on the floor,
where a couple of newspaper clippings lay.
ON the first clipping. A photo of Dr. Aubrey Hawk and Neil
Conti. The title reads: LOCAL HERO AND FIANCEE DIE IN
TRAGIC COLLISION
On the second clipping. A photo mosaic of five children,
one of them being a five year old Zack, and the girl from
the church. The title reads: HAVE YOU SEEN THESE CHILDREN?
Underneath the photo their names are written:

to believe.
IN A FLASH -- A decayed hand reaches from under the bed and
grabs the clippings in its fist and drags them back into
the depth of the darkness.
ON the darkness for a beat a HISS emerges from the depth.
