FOR MEAT,BREAD AND WINE, O CARBALLIO.

(Pra carne, pan e

vio, O Carballio)
O Carballio is a village placed 27,9 km from Ourense city and 153
km from the city of A Corua. This town has 14.123 inhabitants and it
has a lot of places which are very attractive to the tourism.
It is known for doing the best pulpo feira, in fact, every year, in
the second Sunday of August, is celebrated A festa do pulpo (The
party of the octopus) and a huge amount of foreign people and also
Spanish people come to taste our gastronomy. Last year I met 5
English and 10 German people and Im sure that there were so much
people from other places. It concentrates between 50 and 100
thousand people because the municipal park ( where it has place) has
37 hectares. You can go early in the morning and save an area where
you can do it the octopus by yourself with or you can order your meal
to one of our brilliant pulpeiras (the chefs that cook the octopus)
and eat it at the park.
TOUR
This route will be made by foot because O Carballio is a small town
so you can get to the different places walking.
We will start at the city centre , in the Emigrant Square we found a
winery which is specialized in serrano ham, national cheese and wine
and its name is Bodegon do xamon. Wine in my village is very famous
because next to it there are two towns called Leiro and Ribadavia
where there are a lot of wine yards of Ribeiro wine. In fact, there is a
route for tasting the different types of wine.
On the way to our main restaurant, we can visit The Veracruz Temple,
which is a church in the middle of the city.
For having lunch there are a lot of places to choose but everywhere
will serve you pulpo feira e carne ao caldeiro.
The first one consists in boiled octopus in a pat made of Steel (but
before it was made of cooper) for 25 min. Normally this dish is
garnished with olive oil, heavy salt and paprika. Paprika could be hot
or sweet and you also cannot add it if you dont like hot foods.
Another piece of advice is to eat that with a loaf of bread from the
local oven. This oven is very special because is made of stone and the
bread is baked as 120 years ago. ( You can found it at the suburb of
Flores, near from the city centre).

The octopus is just a starter because after eating it, they serve you
Carne ao caldeiro. This dish consists in boiled beef with boiled
potatoes and paprika.
In my opinion, the best place where you can it these dishes is The
Fuchela which is at the outskirts of the town next to the train station.
The part of the octopus will cost around 7 euros and the meat around
6 euros.
After having lunch, the desserts will come. Here, the most common
are the cream canes from the local bakery called Cervio and a pot
coffee with drops of moonshine. It is usually homemade like the coffee
liquor.
Lunch will finish at 4:30 pm and Its time to taste some cocktails in
order to relax and doing the digestion. We are going to go to one of
the modernist cafes in O Carballio called Moon 93. It is very special
because they have the best barman of Galicia working with them.
Later we will go for a walk in order to visit the health resort of the
town, which is known in every part of Galicia, because our last visit is
opposite it. The restaurant is called The Derby and their specialty is
the Galician hake which is boiled hake with boiled potatoes and a
sauce made in a frying pan with garlic, oil and paprika. It is also
accompanied with peas.
The route will cost around 30 euros all included.
I recommend you to try out this route during the octopus celebration
but it will cost a little bit more.
I hope that you will enjoy it.
