Topic: STDs and HIV
Standards:
1) Core Concepts (1.7) : Describe the short and long-term effects of HIV, AIDS, and other STDs.
2) Accessing Valid Information (3.2): Identify local resources concerning reproductive and
sexual health, including all FDA-approved contraceptives, HIV/STD testing, and medical care.
Objectives: Upon completion of the lesson, the student will
a. Identify the three types of STDs.
b. Differentiate the most common modes of transmission that lead to HIV/AIDS.
c. Assemble a list of resources/treatment centers that help with HIV/AIDS and STDs.

Anticipatory Set:
We will start off with a few questions, no need for students to raise their hands or shout out
answers, just something to think about.
Have you ever had oral sex?
Have you ever had anal sex?
Have you ever had unprotected sex?
Did you know, 1 in 4 teens contracted STDs each year.

But account for 50% of the 20M new STIs in the U.S each year
Undiagnosed STIs cause 24,000 women to become infertile each year
70% Gonorrhea
63% Chlamydia
49% HPV
45% Genital Herpes

20% Syphilis
Gonorrhea - 200,000 (diagnosed & reported) 570,000 (estimated total new infections)
Chlamydia - 1M (diagnosed & reported) 1.8M (estimated total new infections)
Risk Factors - insufficient screening, confidentiality concerns, biology, lack of access to
healthcare, multiple sex partners

experts at practicing safe sex. The only way to be 100% safe is with abstinence, however just
remember that reduce risk you must always wear a condom or other barriers.
