Dr.

David Jenkins
Spring Term, 2011

American Studies
I will discuss the following fifty readings from the four course anthologies. At the final written examination,
you will be given one of the assigned readings from Making America and two general essay topics that ask you
to respond by referring specifically to readings in the other three course anthologies. Each of these three short
essays will be worth up to 15 points, for a total of 45 points possible. There will be another 15 points possible
for lecture notes, to be submitted at the end of the three lectures. Your course mark will be the total points you
receive divided by ten then rounded up if the average is at least 0.5 of the next higher mark. For example, 54
points yields an average of 5.4, which would be a course mark of 5/ , but a total of 55 points is an
average of 5.5, and would be rounded up to a course mark of 6/.

Course Anthologies:
1) Making America (Luther S. Luedke, editor)
2) Basic Readings in U. S. Democracy (Melvin I. Urofsky, editor)
3) A Twentieth-Century American Reader Volume 1 (Jack Lane and Maurice OSullivan, editors)
4) American Perspectives (Carl Bode, editor)
here are multiple copies of these four anthologies at the American Corner library on the fifth floor at the Nova
Sgrada, and Basic Readings in U. S. Democracy is also available on line, under resources at the American
Corner link that is part of the Plovdiv University website. In addition, photocopies of all assigned reading for the
course will be available all term at the Copy Express Copy Center, 13 Tsar Asen.
