Albay Food Tripping #3: Waways

Posted on March 19, 2010 by Sharlyne Ang & filed under Casual Dining, Filipino.

Pinangat @ Php 60 per order

If you have been searching places to eat in Bicol, you may have encountered Waways. Before going
to Bicol, we researched the must-try restaurants in Legazpi and Waways was a common suggestion
among others who have been to Bicol.
Waways was called as such because it was named after their owner Aling Laura Cristobal and its
been existing since 1967. Most Bicolanos and tourists love the place because of its very simplicity
and it has also become an institution in Albay. Right now the Cristobal Family is continuing to serve
the authentic dishes that their
The restaurant is big, contains probably 20 tables which can acccomodate 5-10 people in it. We
came in at around 6:00 pm and quite early. We were the only customers at that time. Its a
carinderia/turo-turo style (turo in Filipino means to point Turo-Turo is the method of ordering food in
the Philippines wherein you have to point at the chosen entree or viand from the variety of precooked/cooked dishes) which the servers will bring in to your table.

Bicol Express @ Php 60 per order

We ordered 3 of their popular dishes: Bicol Express, Pinangat and Halaan Soup.
Many say that they have the best Bicol Express in Bicol and so we tried their version. Bicol Express
is a popular Bicolano dish wherein pork is cooked with coconut milk combined with lots of red and
green chilies (they use siling labuyo, the smallest and spiciest of all chilies). By that description, youll
really expect that its very spicy. My expectations werent wrong, theirs was really spicy!
The Pinangat, also called Laing, is a dish made of taro leaves, chili leaves and a little pork wrapped
in gabi leaves. Their Pinangat was good too, it didnt give me that itchy feeling in my throat. When
you eat gabi leaves and it gave you that itchy feeling in your throat, it means that it wasnt washed
thoroughly.

Halaan Soup @ Php 120 per order

We loved the Halaan (sea shell) Soup. One of order of which is good for 2 3 people. Karla and I
enjoyed eating the Halaan and the soup was very tasty as well. The Americans seated beside us
were enjoying their Halaan Soup with a bottle of beer. Yum!
For these three dishes, plus 2 cups of rice and 2 cans of softdrinks, we only paid Php 330 for the 2 of
us! Isnt that cheap?! They also have grilled pork, fish and other Filipino dishes to choose from so it
wouldnt be so hard to find something you like.
Waways Restaurant is located in Pearanda Street, Albay.

Longganiza de Guinobatan gives pride to

Albay town

Longganiza de Guinobatan. PHOTO BY NINO JESUS ORBITA

GUINOBATAN, Albay, 16Aug2013 (PNA) Lukban town in Quezon boasts of its own longganiza and
Vigan, Ilocos Sur, has its own pride of the meat product. Down south here in the Bicol region, people
come for the delicious Longganiza de Guinobatan, a local sausage made of pork.
Longganiza de Guinobatan is now recognized as among the One Town, One Product choices being
promoted now as among Bicols culinary delicacies not only in the local but also in the national market,
according to Lourdita Llanto, a professor of the Bicol University College of Agriculture and Fisheries
(BUCAF) here.
Llanto claimed that unlike other products, the Longganiza de Guinobatan is manually made.
We dont use meat grinders in making the sausage, we manually chop the meat, she added, so there
goes our heart and mind in doing it.
To promote the local meat product, the local government unit launched a week-long Guinobatan
Longaniza Festival, highlighted by a Longaniza Culinaria event where an on-the-spot longganiza-making
and cooking competition was held.
Longganiza makers and cooking aficionados outsmarted one another in a relax display of their skills in
preparing Guinobatans famous sausage and cooking it in various exquisite menus.

What made the competition more interesting is that it pitted young and adult contestants, as four
elementary grade students aged 10-11 years old tested their skills against their much-experienced adult
counterparts in the one-and-half hour competition.
Concepcion Olayon, 65, a professional meat processor for three decades and who owns a meat shop in
the town market, was the oldest.

Legazpi, the main city, combines old-world charm and modern facilities to make it a perfect
tourist haven. Here, there are endless activities to fill up a visitors stay, from diving, to

option for exploring the mountains lush greenery. Historic churches and ruins likewise
abound and provide a beautiful peek at the provinces Spanish colonial past.

If youre planning a visit to Albay you should also consider doing these other activities:

history and cultural lovers. On display at the Legazpi City Museum are historical and
archeological relics of the Citys gentry. The museum also doubles as an art gallery for
celebrated Bicolano artists. Contact: Linda Gonzalez Belleza, Museum Curator (052) 8205972

consider it as both as a picnic grove and a wildlife park as it is home to 347 animals
belonging to 75 species.
3. Pinangat and tinulmoks. This Bicol dish of taro leaves cooked in coconut milk and served
wrapped in banana leaves is considered an Albay specialty. The version cooked with fresh
shrimps (buyod) is called tinulmoks. Extra spicy, creamy and made from the freshest

4. Halo-halo. Nothing goes better with Bicols spicy dishes than a tall glass of halo-halo.
Tiwis famous version has really smooth crushed iced with all the sweet and colorful fruits
and other ingredients mixed in. Top that with leche flan and grated cheese for a delicious
and filling desert. Youll find stalls along the roads going to Tiwi serving halo-halo but the
popular Ice Blink resto near the Tiwi Church may be your best bet in terms of cleanliness and
presentation.

benefits something those prized white sands cant boast of.
