A Gotong-Royong in a Village

Last Sunday, the headman of Kampong Seri held a gotongroyong in his village. The aim of the gotong-royong was to clean and
beautify the village. A clean village with beautiful and pleasant
surroundings can encourage the villagers to live harmoniously. The
gotong-royong began at eight in the morning.
The villagers were divided into six groups. Each group had a
leader and they were given specific jobs to do. The first group
cleared the rubbish left around in the village. They all worked
together and the result was brilliant.
The second group was told to clean and wash the drains. The
drains were full of mud and stones. The villagers took a long time to
clean the drains because there were a lot of works involved.
However, the villagers did not make a single complaint and put in
lots of efforts in completing the works.
The third group arranged the rock garden. They arranged the
rocks to form a beautiful pattern. They also weeded the rock garden.
The headman was extremely satisfied with their work.
The last group planted some trees. The trees were donated by
Datuk Tiong King Sing (a Malaysian politician). Last week, Datuk
Tiong visited the village. He was very supportive of gotong-royong
project and immediately showed his generosity by donating trees.
He also donated RM1000 to some poor families.
The gotong-royong ended at three in the afternoon. By this
time, the village compound looked very much cleaner and more
beautiful. A special thank should go to the villagers who put in so
much time and efforts to make the project a successful one.
