The Huntsman Cancer Institute

The Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) is part of University of Utah Health Care and
also a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), a non
profit alliance of the worlds leading cancer centers. This non-profit organization
is committed to improving the quality and effectiveness of care to patients with
cancer. Every year, they serves thousands of cancer patients from Utah and the
surroundings states.
Mission:
Their mission is to understand cancer from its beginnings , to use that knowledge
in the creation and improving of cancer treatments, to relieve the suffering of
cancer patients , and to provide education about cancer risk, prevention and care.
Breakthrough and Discoveries:
HCI is the only cancer center that conducts basic translational, and clinical
research simultaneously, taking what is learned in the laboratory through drug
development and into the clinic.
At the facility, they had cancer care directory, contact information, clinical trials,
training education, and research lab, but the most thing Im going to talk about is
the clinical trials.
Clinical trials is the key to monitored or study of the new treatments for cancer
patients. This will help the scientist find better ways to prevent, diagnose, or treat
an appearing cancer disease. Note that before they even began to do a new
clinical trial, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration must approve new treatment.
This research will help scientist improving cancer treatments and work toward
finding a cure.
Clinical trials are experimental in many ways. There are some risks as well as
benefits, depending on the treatment being studied and the health of the person

in the study. The health provider will discuss potential risks and side effects than
current remedies before they start clinical trials.
Benefits may Include:
Playing a more active role in ones own Health.
Helping scientist find new and better cancer treatments.
Risk may Include:
Unpleasant side effects.
Serious side effects.
Unknown health risk.
Recent News from HCI
HCI believes that massage therapy help rub out stress for cancer patients. They
said it can make a huge difference in a patient recovery. One patient says it is
improving his quality of life dramatically.
Jim Dreyfus was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010. He was a successful
business owner, he had a hard time fighting the disease. His hectic lifestyle was
not helping his health. What he did was left his job and decided to literally focus
his life on keeping well and staying alive as long as possible.
Jim started to receiving massage therapy at HCIs wellness once a week. He
immediately felt the difference in his stress levels. JIm says I think the best
thing that people who have cancer or chronic disease can do for themselves is to
learn how to start reducing their stress. Spending an hour getting a massage can
reduce your stress.
Tammy Sparks agree, she was Jims massage therapist. She also stated when
patient reconnect within themselves, they are able to balance everything
out---just get away from the world and relax, she says. Jim still a cancer patients.
The cancer spread to his bone in five different areas of his body. He is currently
participating in a clinical trial and his cancer has not gotten any worse since he
began the trial in 2013.Between the trial and his weekly massages, he feels
optimistic about the future. I want to be a grandfather. I want to see some
grandkids, he says. I think I have more things to do in life.
Utah caregivers patients hope that new 3-D tech can make breast cancer easier to
catch, to prevent the disease earlier. HCI and the University of Utah Health Care
(UUHC) know it is important for all community member to have a better

understanding of breast cancer. HCI share the six top things women can do to
help lower their risk of breast cancer.
1. Exercise daily.
2. Maintain a healthy body weight.
3. Limit alcohol intake to only one drink per day.
4. Breastfeed your babies if possible.
5. Limit hormone therapies.
6. Talk to your healthcare provider about your family history of cancer.
Healthcare provider is recommending a breast exam every two or three years for
ages 20-39,. For women ages forty and up should get a mammogram every year.
My two learning outcomes from SLCC are:
The students think critically and creatively- meaning reasoning effectively
from available evidence; demonstrating effective problem.
Students develop the knowledge and skills to become community engaged
learners and scholars- this include s understanding the natural, political,
historical, and social.
In from the Philosophy, Happiness, and the meaning of life- it says a life with
many pleasures than pains. What is happiness if you are being miserable for
having cancer. It is depend on how you cope the situation I guess. Just like Jims
example, he keeps moving on and still had the strength to go into a wellness
because he keeps thinking of wanting to be a grandpa and to see grandkids
someday.
Participating on everything make you more responsible and there is a chance
that you will learn a lot of things about your surroundings and actually you can
become more good citizen in the community.
I enjoyed at least reading articles about the Huntsman Cancer Institute and how I
wish to work there someday. Unfortunately, I did not get the volunteer job for the
reason that they did not have a lot of extra job they needed my help with.
This is exactly the same steps I was going to do to volunteer to work at the
Huntsman Cancer Institute, Im a little bit disappointed because I know for sure
they will call me and hire me as a volunteer worker over there but theres always a
next time. I will not stop trying to apply for a volunteer just because I did not get
this time.
