LAB-4: Traffic Flow Speed Density Model

Objectives: To study various speed density flow models and to figure out the exact relationship between
the traffic parameters.
Need for the Study:
In design of freeway surveillance, control systems and capacity of a facility, a curve relating flow and
concentration is helpful. Traffic stream models attempt to establish a better relationship between the traffic
parameters. These models were based on many assumptions, for instance, Greenshield's model assumed a
linear speed-density relationship.
General Overview:
The relationship among the three variables u, k and q is called a traffic stream model. The model shall be
three dimensional as depicted in Figure 1.it is convenient to show the model as shown in Figure 2 as one
or more of the three separate relationships in two dimensions.

Study Components:
Greeshields Model: assumed a linear relationship between speed-density.

Pipes Model: introduced a new parameter (n) to provide for a more generalized modeling.

Underwood Model: assumed an exponential relationship between speed-density.
