SUMMARY OF COMPUTER
At the time of 20th century, the world was ruled by one government----the
computer. Dr. Rose as an inventor of computer had a quite unique idea to
connect mens thoughts with a thought reading computer. He invented this
program to free the world from criminals, as it contains such commands of
destroying every man who even thought of committing a crime. Other than
this, his invention also abolished poverty and diseases from the world
through logical analysis and the complications of love and marriage tangles.
But there was a group of dissidents and philosophers who were against this
invention and protested all over the world against its excessive control over
the thoughts of mankind, as it would interfere in their privacy. But Dr. Rose
promised, he wouldnt abuse this technology and finally the computer was
introduced to the world.
In the beginning few years, the world became peaceful and free of crime.
But then people started calling this system a curse. They wrote against it,
there were posters everywhere and his invention seems to be eroding.
Things went out of the control of Dr. Rose, so he instructed the computer to
ban all the writings of dissidents and thousands of people burnt in flames
the next day. Those who were left had no choice but to remain silent
otherwise they would face the same fate. Dr. Rose was still impatient so he
decided to punish all those who were thinking against computer by
programming it even to probe the private thoughts of people and millions of
people got burnt the next day. Now Dr. Rose got satisfied.
Then one day, when Dr. Rose was reading a book on Renaissance, an idea
stuck to his mind that his age lacks the happiness of old days where

criticism brought pleasure. There was misery all around. People were
burning before the eyes of their fellow beings. There was a sense of fear and
horror everywhere. He realizes that he had snatched their smiles. He started
trembling and regretting on what he had done. But it was too late. He
already had created a permanent and immutable programmed monster
which had destroyed the lives of millions. While these ideas were coming to
his mind, the red bulbs around him started glowing and giving him
warnings. He laughed at his fears. Then he got the news of his frienda
devotee of computerbeing burnt. He was shocked and making deliberate
efforts to shake such thoughts but they over-powered him and the computer
was persistently sending him warnings over warnings. It was his mistake to
create such a monster. But then he became determined to destroy it and
freed mankind from its evil. He started hitting computer with a hatchet, but
as once he had ordered it, not to be destroyed by the action of any madman,
it was obeying his orders now. He knew it was the end. He perspired, cried,
shouted, wept and cursed his own invention but all was vain. First his feet
had caught fire and then the flames leapt up and he danced about a weird
dance of death for his life. But all was lost, he fell down and doomed.

CRITICAL APPRAISAL
Tariq Rehman seems to knock the 20th century as an oblivious age. He
fulminates against the century due to the immoderate use of technology and
specifically the computer, as he uses the term "one government" by which
he means a flawless system with no possibility of crime. It gives supremacy
to logic over emotions and consider them untrustworthy.
Dr. Rose says that the world didn't need criminals" but he does not

speculate his own crime of spying into the thoughts of others, which is a
crime in itself. This surveillance gives a prelisting feeling to the people that
they are being watched by someone. No one could question the invention,
whosoever try to denounce it, was burnt into flames. Criticism gives color
to life but it was prohibited by Dr. Rose. Computer has diminished the
creative power among people as in the text we can have a glimpse of
banning writers, intellectuals and their writings.
Dr. Rose seems to arise as an Aristotelian tragic hero whose hubris nature
leads to the downfall due to his own accord. He praises computer all the
time, ignoring its hazards. He, in his pride has made a monster. When the
truth reveals, just as he was reading the Renaissance book, he apprehends
his mistake and the dreadfulness of present days , which is the outcome of
his permanently programmed order. This anagnorisis made him the victim
of his own creation, and his affliction leads him to danced about a weird
dance of death.

Central Idea
Man is excessively dependent on technology which is diminishing his
intellectual abilities and emotions. He is immensely indulged in this
superficial world that now he can not imagine to live without it. Although
technology is beneficial for mankind at the same time it is creating troubles
as well.
