INTRODUCTION
NTRODUCTION
Weve been given a task by the lecturer to conduct a drama play. The given theme was
twisted fairy tale and weve chosen Beauty and the Beast as our twisted fairy tale play.
The original story of Beauty and the Beast is basically about a girl named Belle who
is dissatisfied with life in a small provincial French town, constantly trying to fend off the
misplaced affections of conceited Gaston. The Beast is a prince who was placed under a
spell because he could not love. A wrong turn taken by Maurice, Belles father, causes the
two to meet.
Basically, the original story is different from our drama play. Our drama play is about
a prince who was placed under a spell by the witch that he had banished from the castle
before, because of the rumours that shes the cursed. In order to break the spell, the beast
have to find someone who can truly love him whole-heartedly. But too bad, a beautiful girl
named Belle came and pretend as if shes in love with the beast while actually theres a
hidden agenda behind it. At the end of the story, majority of them died and that includes
Belle, Beast a.k.a Prince James, and Belles mom.
In general, drama is the portrayal of life as seen from the actors view, (Way, 1967).
By having a drama play, it actually helps the students to improve themselves in many ways.
Drama play helps to improve the students communication skills, language skills, critical
thinking skills, performance skills and many more.
In the nutshell, this report will explain about our journey throughout the drama play. It
includes everything, whether it is before the drama play, during the drama play, and even
after the drama play. This report also includes the positive and negative feedbacks of what we
had experienced throughout the drama play. The theme of the drama is twisted fairy tale and
our drama title is Beauty and The Beast.

beloved prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) ways in giving advices to others in wise and cautious
manner. Furthermore, they could also apply the usage of I language instead of You
language in order to avoid personal attacks and save the others face. Thus, it shows that
interpersonal communication skills have been effectively aiding in facing the conflicts in the
group.
Thirdly, a problem regarding the selection of colors for the face paint and the decision
to switch off the light during the play was also being faced by our group. It occurred when
one of the members decided to buy a light color for the face paint, but a few of the group
mates felt that the color was not really suitable with the character that he/she supposed to
play. On the other hand, the problem related to the decision in switching off the light also
happened due to the difficulties and the long period of time taken for the light to be switched
on and off repetitively during the performance. Notwithstanding, all the group members
learnt to compromise with each other and approached the conflicts with a win-win style. We
also learnt to collaborate well with each other and established rapport and positive relational
climate. Therefore, it can be clearly seen that conflict management skills are crucial in
handling the problems rose in a group.
Fourthly, a conflict also occurred at the beginning due to the ego possessed by each
member in the group. The inability to express their feelings and opinions due to the worried
of hurting one another has made the situation became worse. Some members also had
difficulties in admitting their mistakes and let go of their dissatisfaction with other members.
This has ended up with those who were involved talking at the back of the others hoping that
they could realize their faults and settle down. However, luckily, one of those who were
involved apologized to the other members and the situation got back to normal. This conflict
can be better solved with each members being open-minded to criticism and others opinions.
Besides, they should also let others know their true feelings and emotions towards each other
18
and avoid talking behind them. This can perhaps prevent the situation from becoming worse
and the conflict can be settled immediately. Hence, it shows that effective communication
skills are important in preventing conflicts from happened.
Next, some misunderstandings also occurred between the group members as a
consequence of the lack of clarity in the message, biased actions and lack of awareness on
missed meanings. Misunderstandings happened when the group members decided to have a
meeting, select the venue and decide a time for the meeting to start. Besides that, one of the
group members also felt dissatisfied due to the different treatment given by some of the
members towards him/her compared to others. Moreover, this problem also existed due to the
lack of awareness on the missed meanings given by some of the members. All of the
mentioned problems can be solved if the team mates become more clear and specific in
sending their messages and using unbiased language as well as performing unbiased actions
towards each member in the group. The members can also be more aware of the missed
meanings by being more alert of the differences in the tones, intonations as well as the words
used by the speakers. We should learn on how to listen between lines and try to establish a
supportive rather than a defensive climate for conversation. Other than that, the members
should also ask questions from the sender of the messages to get clarification regarding the
messages. Thus, it shows that misunderstandings can be avoided if the members become
more sensitive towards each others feelings and needs.
Apart from that, the lack of ability to control the emotions as well as the expression
also led to misunderstandings between the members in the group. For example, some of the
members came to the meeting with a moody face due to the tiredness, lack of sleep as well as
the stress and pressure given by the large number of responsibilities and assignments that are
unrelated with the play. They did not manage to control their facial expression and ended up
making others felt uneasy and uncomfortable with them. This situation can be improved by
19
controlling the non-verbal cues and leaving other things behind before they attended and
concentrate on the meetings. Moreover, those who faced the moody person should understand
his/her situation and consider their past experiences when interpreting the non-verbal cues
given by the moody one such as avoiding eye-contact, frowning, crossing arms as well as
using different tone and posture. In addition, they should also give some space to the
individual in settling and handling his/her emotions. Therefore, it can be clearly seen that
nonverbal communication skills are vital in socializing and interacting with others.
Then, interaction via the applications or sites such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram
and Twitter which can be done using the gadgets (smart phones, tablets, laptops) that we have
in our hands 24/7 resulted in the misunderstandings between the members in the group. This
can be associated with the cues-filtered out theory that explains the restriction in the
messages as the nonverbal cues like facial expressions, gestures and tone of voices were
filtered out in the electronically mediated communication (EMC).For instance, some of the
members always misinterpreted messages written in the Whatsapp group thinking and
assuming that the members of the group were angry towards those who were coming late to
the meetings and the practices. This was due to the absence of face-to-face interaction and the
lack of emoticons used in the messages to better express the feelings of the sender. Hence, it
can be clearly seen that despite of the existence of many advantages in using EMC, there are
also some disadvantages regarding the usage of EMC in daily life.
All in all, it can be seen that the elements of interpersonal communication skills such
as verbal and nonverbal communication skills, conflict management skills as well as listening
and responding skills play a major role in an individuals life. Conflict is a normal part of any
interpersonal relationships. In settling any conflict, try to put ourselves in the other person
position. If tempers begin to flare and conflict is escalating, both parties involved should try
to cool off and only come back to the discussion when they are fresh and calm. At the end of
20
each problem, those involved should sincerely ask for forgiveness, forgive the opposite
parties as well as forget about the negative issues. Moreover, others should also be assertive
in apologizing by paraphrasing their emotions and feelings as well as be flexible in facing
different types of people. Perhaps, it would be better if the individual who was involved
reflect their actions before they apologize to the other party. Each of the group members
should also do some self-reflection before perceiving someones attitudes and behaviors
negatively. The process of socializing with each and every member should be done more
frequently to get better understanding about each other. In collaboration, enhance
commitment to a solution is important because all are involved in shaping the outcome.
21
BENEFITS
GAINED FROM
THE DRAMA
22
23
this case, every member was at first being responsible with their own script according to their
own abilities in delivering their own character. After conducting a lot of meetings regarding
the drama, many scenes and lines were added and improvised from the original one to make
the play more inquisitive and interesting for the audience. This process has helped the
members to sharpen up their language and thinking skills in producing the good script that
best suit the storyline and the settings of the drama. As a result, we received many positive
feedbacks from the audience regarding the deliverance of the story in the play performance.
Thirdly, this activity was surely helped us in building our confidence level. The
improvement shown by the members throughout the progress of the drama has proven that
the process in the production has aided the members to be more confident in giving out their
opinions. Besides that, the group members also received the opportunity to take part in the
discussions and share their experiences, views and creative ideas. This could be seen through
the development of the roles presented during the performance day as compared to the
beginning when the first drama practice was conducted. At first, some of the members were
really worried if the roles given could not be acted out according to the audience
expectations. However, with the help from the experienced and talented crews as well as
conducted many practices as much as we could, all of the members could perform all-out and
enjoyed every scene that they participated.
Moreover, the process in creating this drama has made us realized that we still needed
to improve our communication skills and developed our level of emotional intelligence. Both
elements are vital to be emphasized while working in a group. This is because conflicts will
normally occur when we are working in a team. We could see that these two keys were
crucial in assisting us to prepare ourselves better and to become more effective
communicators. Nonetheless, we were also aware that this activity helped us in developing
our social skills as by its very own nature, it has the ability to eventually create strong bond
24
of friendship within the team as we laughed, learnt, ate, discussed, felt stress, solved
problems and be together week after week. This benefit was closely related to the
interpersonal communication lessons as it lifted our awareness towards relating ourselves to
others.
In a nutshell, this activity was very precious and valuable to our group as it gave us
the opportunity to practice the lessons learnt in the class by experiencing the real situations
that have happened throughout the play. Despite of the many benefits that have been
mentioned above, there are some recommendations that can be applied in better improving
the next drama performances. We would appreciate it more if the venue for the drama
practice was prepared earlier before the performance so that we could practice in the real
venue and be prepared with any circumstances that might happened due to the condition of
the venue itself. Furthermore, it would also be better if we could have the specific places that
can be used for the practice of the drama. This was because we faced some problems when all
the classes in HS building as well as education building were full. Moreover, there were also
times when the classes that we have booked were used by other students for other purposes.
Besides, we also would prefer and hope to perform in a better-equipped venue so that our
performance was not limited because of the size of the stage or the lack of the proper sound
and LCD system. After all,we still felt grateful as this play has taught us to appreciate our
members and every precious and memorable moment that we have spent with our teammates
throughout the production process that we could not get from the activities conducted in other
classes.
