GIVE THANKS! NOVEMBER 24 IS THANKSGIVING DAY.

Clash of County Titans

Lincoln Avenue Middle

School Breaks Ground

With only a pair of losses between the two teams this regular high school
football season, Millville and Vinelands Thanksgiving Day classic promises
to be one of the most competitive in recent memory. { BY JEFF SCHWACHTER }

While last years game between Vineland and Millville was a blowout in
favor of the Thunderbolts, this years matchup will be more interesting
as Vineland is vastly improved and Millville is still in the playoff picture.

his Thanksgiving Day, the Millville and Vineland

high school football teams will meet for a game
thats become as treasured a tradition in the
Cumberland County community as turkey, stuffing and
pumpkin pie: the annual Millville vs. Vineland rivalry game.
On Thursday, Nov. 24, the Millville Thunderbolts
fresh off a big win against second-seeded Rancocas Valley
(32-15) last Friday, Nov. 18, which clinched a spot in the
South Jersey Group 5 finals for Millville travel to
Vineland to face the Fighting Clan on its home turf for
the 145th game in a long-standing high school rivalry
game, which commenced in 1893.
Last year, Millville played at home, shutting out
Vineland for its seventh Thanksgiving Game win in a row
with a score of 21-0. This year, however, theres much
more at stakefor both teams.
Although both Millville and Vineland had a terrific
2016 season, with each team entering the playoffs at 7-1,
Millvilles season is not over as it takes its 10-1 record (overall, including its recent playoff wins) to Rowan University
on Friday, December 3, to play Toms River in the final
round of the 2016 NJSIAA South, Group 5 Playoffs.
Coach Dennis Thomas, in his second year as head
coach for Millville, tells The Grapevine, A lot of the kids
honestly arent worried about what happens [on
Thanksgiving]. Their primary focus is on Toms River.
Now that Millville has advanced in the playoffs, with
the Thanksgiving Game scheduled midway between the
teams clinching playoff win against Rancocas and the
Group V South Championship game, how are Coach
Thomas and the players approaching this weeks matchup against Vineland?

After nearly 13 years in the making, Lincoln

Avenue Middle School is becoming a reality.
A symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was
held on Thursday at the 40-acre future site of
the building. Representatives of the Vineland
School District, NJ Schools Development
Authority (SDA) and local and state officials
welcomed guests to the event for what was formerly known as Vineland Middle School #2.
The crowd was greeted by SDA CEO Charles
McKenna, who said, I am confident that when
the students and staff walk through the doors
of this new school in September 2018, they will
be excited by the state-of-the-art facility...
The new, one-story 98,750-square-foot
school is being built on Lincoln Avenue, near
the intersection of Butler Avenue. The facility
will provide state-of-the-art educational opportunities for 620 students in grades 6 through 8.
The new school will include 19 general classrooms, five science labs, three small instructional rooms, a computer lab, a multipurpose room,
gym, cafeteria, music rooms, art room, media
center, and athletic fields. Students from Rossi
Intermediate School will attend Lincoln Avenue
School; Rossi will revert to an elementary school.
The SDA is primarily funding the $49.8 million project, while Ernest Bock and Sons Inc.
of Philadelphia, along with SSP Architectural
Group of Bridgewater, NJ, will be constructing
the school. Joseph Jingoli & Sons of
Lawrenceville, NJ is managing the project.

Were going to play, but we will

absolutely rest some of our players at some
point in the game, says Thomas. Probably
put our JV out there.
There are a lot of players walking
around sick with a stomach bug right now,
so the ones who need rest will get rest. But
were playing to win on Thanksgiving Day.
Thomas mentions students such as senior
Tyler Ramos (G, DE) and juniors Tristan
Harris (QB) and Clayton Scott (RB, OLB) as
some of the standout players on the
Millville squad this year. He also is quick to
mention senior Zack Douglas (MLB, TE)
and junior Marcial Ramos (WR, CB).
Our entire offensive and defensive lines
have been pivotal in our success this year,
says Thomas. And the kids are really excited
about the playoffs.
Vineland, whose team leads the annual
Thanksgiving Day rivalry game series by a
hair63-62 (with 19 ties)aims to prevent
Millville from evening up the series, which
began the same year Thomas Edison completed construction on the first motionpicture studio (in West Orange, NJ).
Its always the biggest game of the year.
Its our rival and were looking forward to
playing the game and doing our best to compete, says Dan Russo, in his fourth year as
head coach of Vinelands Fighting Clan.
Russo says there is a bit more at stake this
year with regard to the annual rivalry game as
Vineland needs to win in order to maintain
its all-time lead. If Millville wins Thursday,
the series would become tied 63-63.
We dont want that to happen, says
Russo, so were going to do our best to win
the game. Maybe we can start a little streak
of our own.
Millville has won the Turkey Day classic
each year since 2009.
Vineland has had a terrific season, and
despite being out of the playoffs, Russo says
the teams players are excited about this
years Thanksgiving Game.
He mentions several key players on the
team who have helped lead the Fighting
Clan this year.
On offense it all starts with the quarterback with [ junior] Isaih Pacheco, says
Russo. Hes done a fantastic job for us this
year. He has close to 1,000 yards rushing,
and I think he has over 500 yards passing.
Hes having a phenomenal year. Were real
excited about him and hes a junior so well
obviously have him back next year.
On defense, [ junior] Nihym Anderson
has had a real nice year for us. He leads the
team with sacks. Also on defense is [senior]
Daquan Cosby, our middle linebacker who
leads the team in tackles. And [senior]
Jaylen Zigler has done a phenomenal job.
Hes a 350-pound nose guard, very athletic,
and he controls the middle of that defense
for us on the defensive line.
Our offensive line has also done an
incredible job this year, they deserve a lot of

credit as well. Theyve really come together

as a unit and have done an exceptional job at
creating holes for the running back and the
quarterback. Also, our corner back is [senior]
Daivon Seymore and hes got over 700 yards
rushing; hes having a really great year.
While Vineland doesnt have to play a
Sectional Championship game the week after,
does Coach Russo think his team has an edge
because players have been rested and wont
have as much on their minds come Thursday?
I dont know if its an advantage, says
Russo. I almost think Id rather have had a
game last week than a week and a half off,
so no, I dont think its an advantage.
I dont know what theyre going to do,
but I know that we are going to prepare like

FOOTBALL
Continued from previous page
school, so bragging rights are on the line.
And this year there will be a true
Cumberland County champion because
Cumberland, Bridgeton, Millville and
Vineland all play one another. I know
Millvilles playing for the state championship, but were looking to win the
Cumberland County championship, and
bring that trophy home to Vineland.
The Cumberland County high school
team with the most wins against the other
teams in the county wins the championship.
Both Millville and Vineland are 2-0
within the county coming into Thursdays
game and the winner of Thursdays game
will be the Cumberland County champ,
adds Russo.
Coach Thomas says if his team wins on

Thursday, theyd take it, but that they are

not preparing much for the game, with all of
the teams focus and energy being saved for
Toms River.
Id be lying if I told you otherwise, says
Thomas. Its really an afterthought.
Does he think the Thanksgiving Day
game is a distraction this year?
It would be if we were focused on it, but
we have a real solid group of guys and they
know what to focus on. There are a lot of
preparations and traditions going on in relation to the Thanksgiving Game, but as far as
the teammy teamwe are not focusing on
Vineland at all.
Thomas says he thinks the long-time
Millville-Vineland rivalry game is a great
tradition, and that hes confident his team
will eventually take the lead in the series.
I think that eventually we will tie and
take the lead [in the series], but as of now
we are really focused on winning the state

championship and not a Thanksgiving

game, he says.
Asked if there was still any animosity
toward Vineland after the teams captains
reportedly snubbed their Millville counterparts just before the start of last years
Thanksgiving Game, lining up after the initial coin toss seemingly to shake hands with

their opponents, but running off the field as

soon as Millvilles captains came towards
them to reciprocate, Thomas asks with a
surprised laugh:
Did they do that? Honestly, I dont
remember, he says. Is that what happened?
Oh yeah! They did do that. Thanks for
reminding me. Thats fuel for the fire now. I

Vineland in the Playoffs

Millville in the Playoffs

Vineland made the playoffs this

year for the first time in 13 years,
only to lose a nailbiter at home to
Howell on November 11. Howell
won by a score of 29-27 after a
game-winning field goal with 21
seconds remaining.
The game was the Fighting Clans
first playoff appearance since 2003.
Vineland is 0-7 in playoff games.

Both Millville and Vineland

entered the 2016 South Jersey
Group V playoffs with matching 7-1
regular season records.
On November 11, Millville beat
Cherokee 22-14 in their first-round
playoff game at Wheaton Field.
The victory was especially sweet
since Cherokee knocked the
Thunderbolts out of the playoffs in
the first round last year.
Millville, the No. 3 seed, traveled
to Rancocas Valley to beat the second seeded Red Devils 32-15 on
Friday night (November 18).
After last Fridays win, the Bolts
will face Toms River Northin their
first sectional final appearance
since 2011at Rowan University at
6 p.m. on December 3.
Millville has qualified for the
South Jersey Group V playoffs
every season since the group was
created back in 2012.
In 1975, the Bolts were Sectional
Champions (South Group IV).

A Rivalry for the Ages

The Vineland vs. Millville Rivarly is tied for the 10th oldest in the USA.
The year-by-year results of the high school football rivalry between Millville and Vineland follow. The two
teams face off for the 145th time on Thanksgiving Day. Records from the late 19th Century are difficult to
come by, but we believe the list below is an accurate accounting of the results of the 144 prior meetings.
Decades ago, the teams often played more than once per year, and not necessarily on Thanksgiving Day.

Winning Ways
The Thunderbolts have not had a

he seniors gather at the tables in

the common room, much as they
do three times a week. Annie
Mosley helps unload the suppliespencils and pens, toys, socks, and
moreitems common to most American
children but treasures to the future recipients, the worlds most desperate children,
those living in poverty, refugee camps, or
where disaster has struck.
Debbie VanMeter, recreation therapist
at Inspira LIFE (Living Independently for
Elders), explains the project and gets them
started. The seniors pack up three boxes
for boys and three for girls. As the participants hear how their shoeboxes will be
shipped out and join 11 million more as
part of Operation Christmas Child, they get
even more excited.
Those boxes could end up on the back
of an elephant or just carried up a mountain on someones head to a remote village, says VanMeter. You would not
believe how something simple like that can
bring such joy to a child. Its got to warm
your heart.
The seniors nod, saying they enjoy it
and it is their pleasure.
This is just the latest service project for
the Helping Hands seniors. They are some
of more than 230 participants in Inspira
LIFEs Program for All-inclusive Care for
the Elderly (PACE). The program started
five years ago for those 55 and older who
qualify.
They have to be eligible for nursing
home level of care. Our goal is to keep
them in the community as long as possible, says VanMeter. The program includes
an adult day center, health care and

meets at the adult day center, a state-ofthe-art facility on South Delsea Drive.
As recreational therapist, VanMeter
selects therapeutic activities that help keep
or improve functional abilities. Helping
Hands certainly fits that description, but it
also has the tremendous benefit of giving
participants a sense of purpose and a tie to
the community. It helps their overall well-

being and quality of life to help others.

Helping Hands has been meeting all
year. Twelve to 15 participants join
throughout the week; it could be three or
four one-day or 10 depending on the
amount of time they have at the center.
VanMeter teams up with Assistant
Recreational Therapist Gina Torres, her
right hand in prepping projects and who
is also bilingual. Torres gives out the
instructions in Spanish to a few members.
Were a diverse group, says VanMeter,
and its clear that language isnt a barrier to
working together on service projects.
We started with crocheting mats made
out of plastic shopping bags for the homeless, she says. The mats provide a moisture
barrier. They are giving them to the Code
Blue warming center. It takes a lot of
hands, Van Meter notes. We use an
assembly line, flattening bags, cutting into
strips, connecting bags by looping.
Someone else rolls the yarn and then three
or four people need to sit and crochet.
They work on the same two to three
mats at a time. The mats are for a fullgrown man, over six feet long. It takes
teamwork, VanMeter says. It helps them
improve their dexterity and has its own
rewarding feeling.
VanMeter says a lot of people mail cards
to active servicemen and women, but
Helping Hands has put a twist on this. The
seniors have been making cards for military
personnel to send home to their friends

and family. They get to use their own creativity, she says. One was a beautifully
drawn tree with a little yarn twisted into a
nest on a branch.
The group also made 15 dresses for girls
in Africa and are working on five more.
They are these little sundresses. They turn
out so stinking cute. This was a project
that VanMeters church was working on, so
it worked well to have the Helping Hands
group assist as there are several who enjoy
sewing and embroidery.
Not to leave out the four-legged friends,
the group also cooked up dog biscuits in
the shape of dog bones. We cycle through
different projects, explains VanMeter. We
work on the mats all year long and do the
cards periodically. The craft group also
made dog toys we delivered. We took a
group to the SPCA. They got to interact
with the cats and dogs down there. They
just loved that.
They have also made quilts for the babies
in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
at Inspira. These look like works of art.
Ive enjoyed most of the projects, says
Annie Mosley. But her favorite? My quilt,
her eyes light up as she pulls out a beautiful
child-sized quilt.
Theyre very happy that theyve been
able to give back. It excites them to see
what theyve been able to do. It builds their
self-esteem and self-worth, says VanMeter.
So often our seniors fall into depression,
they have aging problems, losing control,
illnesses. When they can come together
and do something for others, its good
medicine. I

o goes the beginning of Joyce

Kilmers famous poemand the
start of the holiday season has
made trees a focus of our downtown activities.
It started a couple of weeks ago when 13
dogwood trees were planted at spots in our
center city areaEast and Wood streets,
Sixth and Wood streets, and other locations. This is part of a project in which
Main Street Vineland is partnering with
Vinelands Environmental Commission.
The goal is to continue in the spring and
plant up to 50 trees in areas where new
trees are needed. This doesnt begin to
completely fill the gap of missing trees, but
its a strong step in the right direction in a
project that will be ongoing.
Last week saw trees of a different type
for the holiday season. About 125 public
school students were bused downtown last
Wednesday to adorn storefronts on The
Ave with holiday trees. After a years
absence, this Holiday Tree Project is back
for the seventh time. For the first six times,
John and Denise Procopio took the lead in
this project. This year, Design Team member Shonda Johnston, a Vineland Public
School teacher whose husband, Reginald, is
on our Main Street Vineland Board of
Directors, has taken charge. The public will
be able to vote for the best holiday tree by
going to the link on the Main Street
Vineland websiteTheAve.bizor can vote
by paper ballot in selected downtown
Vineland stores. Hanukkah menorahs will
also be added to selected storefronts, courtesy of the Jewish Federation of
Cumberland, Gloucester & Salem Counties.
To bring everyone together during this
joyous time of the year, plans are being
made for a CommUNITY Tree decorating
event in the southwest mini-park at Landis
Avenue and the Boulevard on Monday,
December 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. This will be
an opportunity for schools and community
groups to come together in unity (as indicated in the name of the tree) by one ornament each to be put on the tree. This project, which Shonda is also heading up, has
been done in several communities around
the countrywith unity so much in need in
these times. The event will feature refreshments and the winning tree in the Holiday
Tree Project will be announced.
Though a candelabra and not a tree, a
Hanukkah menorah is a central part of the

holiday season and downtown Vineland is

graced with the largest menorah in South
Jerseyright on the 600 block of Landis
Avenue. The annual lighting of this menorah, through the Jewish Federation, will
take place on Thursday, December 29, at 7
p.m. Music, dancing, hot latkes (potato
pancakes), and fellowship will be the order
of the evening. The menorah, constructed
by Kane Steel of Millville in 1994, has been
a fixture over the years at outdoor menorah
lightings in Vineland. Its been situated for
the couple of years at the site of the former
Precision Watch and Clock building. We
want to help get a nice crowd out for this
and make this another part of our community celebration of the holidays.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving and come out
to The Ave for lots of holiday cheer.
***
Speaking of Thanksgiving traditions, our
annual Holiday Parade will be taking
placeas usualduring Thanksgiving
weekendthis Saturday, November 26
(or Sunday, November 27, if it rains or
snows). The parade, which will start at 5
p.m., has as its theme this year Holidays
on the Ave, reflecting our downtowns
new brand and logo, and is sponsored again
this year by BB&T. Itll feature the all the
usual trimmingsfloat and fire truck contests, bands, music, Santa Claus, and more!
Volunteers are currently being sought to
help coordinate on the night of the parade.
Though the registration has ended, please
come out and have a great time!
***
Come out and spend a nice evening at
The Aves newest dining spot for our next
Downtown Merchants Meet-and-Greet is
coming up on Thursday, December 1, from
5:30 to 7 p.m., at the Mauros On The Ave,
830 E. Landis Ave.next to the Landis
Theater. These Meet-and-Greets are held
every other month and are a great opportunity to bring the various downtown businesses together to get to know and network
with each other and with Main Street
Vineland representatives. We also want the
public to come and to get to interact with
our downtown merchants.
***
Make The Ave your destination for your
shopping needs. Save money on gasoline,
avoid the long lines at the big-box stores,
malls, and shopping centersand also
enjoy the events we have in town. I

Delaware seems to be the link to Kidds

Cumberland County connection.
According to the Lost Treasure USA website, The pirate James Gillian, a member
of Captain Kidd's crew, buried a cache of
treasure on Kelly Island in Delaware Bay.
According to Gillian, the cache is located
between two trees bared by the wind and a
large rock. After Kidds execution, Gillian
planned to return to the island and dig up
the treasure, but he never did.
The online site Metal Detecting Ghost
Towns of the East claims that both Kidd and
Gillian hid two separate treasures together.
This local legend seems to be founded on
the discovery of coins that have washed up
on area beaches, evidence that the website
attributes to shipwrecks in the area. What
connects the lore to Cumberland County is
the site of the lost treasure, Kelly Island,
which is located near Bombay Hook
National Wildlife Refuge in Delaware and
across the bay from Greenwich, where its
not uncommon to hear residents speak of
the buried fortune.
Since Kidds execution, no one has
unearthed any of his rumored hidden
caches. Treasure maps, shovels, intuition
and metal detectors have all been
employed over the centuries to no avail,
even in what became the region of
Vineland. An Evening Journal article in
1908 reports that four area residents who,
while rafting on the Maurice River over a
century earlier, encountered a group of
strangers who had just purportedly sunk
a box of Captain Kidds treasure. Shortly
after, another stranger settled in the area
and was believed to have spent the rest of
his life here unsuccessfully searching for
the treasure.
All of this is about the pursuit of adventure. It may not be the same kind experienced by those who sailed the world
centuries ago or who blazed a path to the
American West, but its adventure
nonetheless. It stirs the imagination,
connects us to history and beckons us to
understand the past. Its what draws us to
locations where our ancestors dwelled and
where any remaining artifacts stand as
testimony to an existence we may never
completely comprehend. Each one is like a
treasure waiting to be discovered. I

aptain Kidd, the infamous

pirate whose rumored treasure
is allegedly buried along
Northeast waterways, enjoyed a
special relationship with South Jersey,
making this area a prime location for his
hidden wealth and a key part of the legend
that survives him.
In the evaluation of Robert A. Peterson,
author of Patriots, Pirates and Pineys: Sixty
Who Shaped New Jersey, That Captain
Kidd was active in South Jersey waters
there can be no doubt. Colonel Robert
Quarry, Judge of the Admiralty, reported to
the Lords of Trade on June 1, 1699, that
there had arrived sixty pirates in a ship
directly from Madagascar. They are part of
Kidds gang. About sixteen of them have
quitted the ship and are landed in ye government of West Jersey at Cape May, The
rest of them are still on board the ship
which lies at anchor near ye Cape of this
government waiting for sloops from New
York to unload hereI seized two of these
priates and conveyed them safely to the
Burlington jail.
If anyone has ever wondered what
might be contained in a treasure buried by
Kidd, Peterson offers evidence of the valuables plundered by pirates of the time. In
a subsequent report, he writes, Colonel
Quarry tells of the assistance of Governor
Bass of the Jerseys, and how more pirates
at Cape May were apprehended. Treasure
recovered from these pirates included rix
dollar (a small Dutch coin), Arabian and
Christian gold, amber and cord necklaces,
India silks and other costly goods of the
Indies. On one occasion, Gov. Bass records
that he saw Captain Kidds sloop himself
a large ship with 60 hands. Unfortunately,
Kidds vessel outsailed the government
ship and escaped.
Azcentral.com also acknowledges the
legend which claims both Captain Kidd
and Blackbeard buried treasure in the
meadows near the upper Cohansey
[River]. Kidds early journeys across the
Atlantic Ocean most likely began on the
Delaware Bay, placing him in contact with
the Cohansey and Greenwich as well as
Delaware, before a stopover in Cape May
for ammunition, fresh water and other supplies readied his ship for a long voyage.

Area Realtor Recognized for

Paying It Back
Vineland resident Joe Orazi has
received the 2016 NJ Realtors Good
Neighbor Award from The New
Jersey Association of Realtors. As
first-place winner, a $2,500 donation will be made to Toast Pink in
Orazis honor.
In a letter to Orazi, TG Glazer,
2016 NJ Realtors president, stated:
You are proof that Realtors do so
much more than help buy and sell
property. Your volunteer spirit reflects
the high standards and values represented by the Realtor family.
Toast Pink, which Orazi cofounded in 2011, raises funds for
needy cancer patients and their
families in the local communities.
They have given thousands of dollars in mortgages, rents, utilities,
home maintenance and more to
those who have been financially
devastated by the disease.
Toast Pink currently has a stack
of applications and not enough
funds to satisfy them.
Orazi is a Realtor at Long &
Foster in Ocean City, NJ. You may
donate to Toast Pink securely
through the website toastpink.org
The New Jersey Realtors Good
Neighbor Awards recognizes
Realtors who have made an
extraordinary commitment to community service on the local, national and/or global level.
Three winners are chosen annually and receive grants in the
amounts of $2,500 for first place,
$1,500 for second, or $1,000 for
third place for the charity organization of their choice.
All winners are recognized in the
January/February issue of New
Jersey Realtor. All three winners
are also announced in December
during an awards ceremony at the
Realtors Triple Play Convention
and Trade Expo in Atlantic City
December 6 this year.

The Cumberland County Improvement

Authority is proud to announce its latest
employee to complete the NJ Certified Clean
Communities Coordinators training. The certificate training is sponsored by the NJ Clean
Communities Council and the Rutgers NJ
Agricultural Experiment Station Office of
Continuing Professional Education.
Byron Calakos received his certificate from
NJCCC Executive Director Sandy Huber at a
graduation ceremony on November 15 during
the NJ League of Municipalities.
Were proud to have Byron as part of our
team. He tackles daily the illegal dumping
issue in the country, reporting illegal dumps he finds along his route to enforcement agencies and cleaning those within the scope of the CCIA, said Anthony
Riviera, county director of Recycling and Clean Communities.
In addition to his regular route and Adopt-a-Road responsibilities, Calakos maintains a portion of Sherman Avenue and Jesse Bridge Road to keep them as litterfree as possible. This is a prime example of the Authoritys and our staffs dedication and commitment to maintaining the quality of life for Cumberland County residents, stated board chairman Robert Nedohon.

Service Clubs Council Welcomes Guest Speaker

Tues.Fri. only

11 am 2 pm

The Vineland Service

Clubs Council welcomed
Darrell Edmonds from the
Pascale Sykes Foundation
as its guest speaker recently. Edmonds spoke about
the foundation and its giving priorities. The Pascale
Sykes Foundation supports
a select number of innovative, flexible, holistic, long-range programs that promote
the integrity, independence and well-being of the intergenerational family unit. The
Foundation focuses on programs targeting low-income families with at least one
actual or potential wage earner and those involving open, voluntary enrollment.
The Foundation recognizes that families are composed of independent individuals,
yet all are interdependent. Accordingly, it supports programs offering integrated
services that produce gradual behavior changes in all family members as they
work toward common goals. The Foundation encourages programs with volunteers,
neighborhood workers, interagency cooperation and marriage strengthening. For
more information on Service Clubs Council, call 856-692-2581.

Funds Approved for Feeding

Programs/Soup Kitchens
The Cumberland County Board of
Chosen Freeholders under the leadership
of Director Joe Derella, approved $60,000
in funding for local feeding programs
throughout Cumberland County.
Director Derella said, the Freeholder
Board recognizes that there many hungry
people in all of our communities throughout the County. While $60,000 only
scratches the surface of what is needed, we
are pleased to be a partner in being able to
provide meaningful support to battle
hunger in our County.
Cumberland County has been providing
funding to assist with several feeding programs throughout the community for many
years. While this funding was previously
provided through PEER Group Funds
which the County no longer receives, the
Board of Chosen Freeholders is committed
to continuing its partnership with organizations that provide this service to help
fight hunger. All organizations that
responded to the RFP received funds. The
following is a list of the funding recipients:
Gateway Community Action Partnership of
NJ, Spirit & Truth Ministries, The Society
of Saint Vincent de Paul, First Presbyterian
Church of Vineland, and Bethel
Development Corporation.
The process includes a response to a
Request for Proposals that is advertised by
the County. Organizations that provide
feeding programs within the County
respond with their proposals to furnish and
provide soup kitchen and foodbank program services. Proposals are reviewed for
completeness and eligibility and funds are
awarded accordingly

Rowan Students Visit SNJ Today Studios

On Thursday, November 17, a dozen Broadcast Journalism students from
Rowan University visited SNJ Todays facility for a tour of the TV and radio
studios. The students were led on the field trip by their professor, Dr. Candace
Kelley. During the tour, the students got to see the news set for the companys
nightly news broadcast, which airs throughout southern New Jersey at 7 and
11 p.m. on channel 4. The aspiring broadcasters got to observe that nights
news broadcast from the control room to see the producer, director, graphics
and sound professionals at work, some of whom are Rowan alumni themselves.
During their visit, the students got to hear about SNJ Today and its sister
companies, Glasstown Productions and Clearbridge Media from Glasstowns
Creative Director Kevin Malone. They got a glimpse at the future of media as
SNJ Todays CFO and COO Frank DiMauro discussed with them his recent
participation in a coast-to-coast media innovation mission where he met with
the leaders of companies like Facebook, YouTube, xAd and Instagram. The
Rowan visitors enjoyed an informative Q&A session with SNJ Todays News
Manager Megan Wolf and learned about careers in various media from their
tour guide, Grapevine newspaper Publisher
Mike Epifanio.

Institutions across the nation competing

for the elite Military Friendly School designation are evaluated using public data
and by completing a survey to assess the
institutions ability to meet thresholds in
categories such as student retention, graduation and employment outcomes, degree
advancement, and loan repayment.
Cumberland County College will be
showcased along with other 2017 Military
Friendly Schools in the annual Guide to
Military Friendly Schools, special education issues of G.I. Jobs and Military Spouse
Magazine, and on militaryfriendly.com
Last week, Cumberland County College
celebrated the dedication of a Veterans
Resource Center, designed specifically with
the needs of military students in mind.
Reserved exclusively for Cumberlands veteran students, the Veterans Resource
Center houses two dedicated study rooms
with four computers and a printer; a
lounge area with a TV; and a break room
furnished with a microwave and a refrigerator that was donated by the Fleet Reserve
Association of Atlantic City. A campus life
organization called the Freedom Fighters
Club provides veteran students with fellowship and camaraderie.
