We have been working with
expressions and equations for
the last couple weeks and will
continue with this concept
until winter break. Students
are learning pre-algebra rules

while working with order of

operations, writing verbal expressions, solving exponents,
translating expressions, substitution with expressions, and
more. Next, we are solving
one step equations and inequalities. Please make sure
your child is continuing to
complete homework and being
present everyday to receive all

This is in conjunction with
Achieve 3000 and their word
stem stations.

understanding of how math connects to the real world with problems like sales tax, discount, simple interest, and commissions.

Students in 7th grade math are

currently studying the Expressions

the Common Core State Standards. An important focus of instruction is students ability to
solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problemsin short,

just two excellent online resources available to meet the individual needs of your child.

SCIENCE NEWS:
Students are currently working
on speed velocity, acceleration,
force, and gravity. Students
have been working towards
explaining how the motion of
an object can be described by
its position, direction of motion, and speed with respect to
some other object. Students
are also working towards illus-

using a graph to show a change
in position over a period of
time.
SOCIAL STUDIES NEWS:
Students are currently working
on summarizing the ideas that
shaped political thought in Europe during the Scientific Revolution. Additionally, students
will identify ways in which the
Scientific Revolution has influenced todays society by describing what they see while
using their daily functioning
skills and other ways this history relates to them. Next week,
students will begin to analyze
the ideas of the Enlightenment
Era philosophers who shaped
political thought in Europe

Eighth Grade News (Class of 2021)

LANGUAGE ARTS
NEWS:
Students are continuing to
work on improving their inferencing skills. We are currently
examining how authors use
figurative language and word
choice to convey meaning. This follows our study of
various text structures. We
are using these skills to critical
evaluate claims and arguments
made by authors as well as
form our own ideas using evidence to support our own
opinion.
MATH NEWS:
Math I
We're here kicking it up a
notch with Polynomials. Using
prior knowledge we are having
fun with Polynomial Arithmetic. This includes classifying

polynomials, multiplying, dividing and factoring polynomials.

After polynomials we will
delve into quadratic equations.
Math
We're at full throttle looking
at proportional relationships
such as between time and
distance, which add a second
variable to our equations. Next up, we'll see how
these relationships result in
graphs with a slope and
how the slope can be interrupted in real-life situations.
SCIENCE NEWS:
In science, our students are
exploring the periodic table,
and using that knowledge to
balance chemical equations.
Next we are going to dive
deep into the water unit.

SOCIAL STUDIES
NEWS:
Social studies has been focused on understanding the
American Revolution, and
how our country became independent from England. We
are now moving into constitution an government. Prior to
the winter break we will begin
learning about the Westward
