Instructor Preparation

Instructor preparation
This document explains to the instructors management and the prospective instructor the
background skills that are required to effectively teach both the course and the prerequisite
courses. It also lists instructional documents and any other material that should be studied
before teaching the course. The prospective instructor must already possess all of the
delivery skills that are required to be an instructor.
This course covers a specific feature of PowerVM Enterprise Edition. If youve taught the
basic virtualization class (Power Systems for AIX - Virtualization I: Implementing
Virtualization AN30/AX30) then you have the skills to learn the PowerVM Live Partition
Mobility material. If you have not taught AN30, you should have strong Virtual I/O Server
skills for creating and managing virtual SCSI and virtual Fibre Channel devices, along with
general partition configuration skills.
To study for this material, review the instructor guide, read the references listed in the
References section of page 1 of each unit in the lecture materials, and watch the
recordings of the train-the-trainer (T3) course. Be sure to practice the exercises and
experiment with the lab environment.
For information about setting up the classroom, see the Lab Setup Guide for this course.

Course materials
The following materials are available for this course.
The instructor needs these materials:
Instructor Guide: The instructor notes will provide any clarification or extra information
needed to teach the visuals.
Instructor Exercises Guide: The instructor exercises guide contains important
information for the instructor, including a description of how to allocate students to
particular partitions when using the IRLP lab environment, and specific actions the
instructor must perform in certain situations. It also includes suggested timings.

Instructor qualifications
Instructors must possess all of the teaching skills that are required of a successful
instructor. This section describes the additional course-specific knowledge that instructors
should have.

Instructor background
This section describes the technical and tool-specific knowledge that is necessary for
instructors to deliver the course successfully. If the instructor cannot address these topics
and draw on industry experience in doing so, the course might not be successful.
The instructor should have the following skills:
Perform common operations with partitions using the Hardware Management Console
(HMC) graphical interface and command line, such as: opening a console window,
dynamic LPAR (DLPAR) operations to add and remove adapters, activating and
shutting down partitions.
Create virtual SCSI devices and manage Virtual I/O Server partitions: This includes a
solid understanding of all of the different types of storage backing devices: physical
volumes, logical volumes, and file backed devices.
Understand PowerVM virtual Ethernet capabilities, including VLAN IDs.
Understand of how to configure networking in AIX.
Understand how to create a shared Ethernet adapter in a Virtual I/O Server partition.
Understand basic Fibre Channel SAN concepts.
Understand N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) technology used to implement Virtual Fibre
Channel storage access.
Basic AIX system administration skills, in particular managing devices and volume
groups.
The instructor should successfully complete the following prerequisite courses:
It is best if the instructor has previously taught Power Systems for AIX - Virtualization I:
Implementing Virtualization (course code AN30/AX30).
The instructor should have the following certifications:
None are required.
