TITLE : SU-30MKM LANDING GEAR OPERATION


INTRODUCTION:
Landing gear are primary load carrying part of an aircraft. The SU-30MKM aircraft has
tricycle type landing gear. It consist of two main landing gears located in the wing
center section and one nose landing gear located in the fuselage nose section. The
main landing gears are retracted into the wing center section well and the nose
landing gear is retracted into fuselage well when the landing gear are selected up. The
extension and retraction of landing gear is performed by first hydraulic system with
help of landing gear lever, which has two position UP and DOWN, located on left
corner of front instrument panel in front cockpit. The emergency extension of landing
gear is performed by compressed nitrogen with the help of either of the emergency
landing gear lever located on the left panel of front instrument panel board in both
cabin. The indication of landing gears position is monitored on landing gear mnemonic
frame.

When the LG selector lever is set to down position, the door valve KE-53-8 is
energized for extension. It communicates the pressure line to extension line and return
line to retraction line, Now the oil is supplied under pressure to :(a)

Nose LG door and main LG front door up locks for opening.

(b)

Door actuating cylinders for extension.

At the beginning of door extension, the limit switches of LG retracted position are
opened and the three green lights of the LG mnemonic frame start flashing. Once the
LG doors are fully extended and locked in down position, the electrical signal is
applied to LG valve KE-53-8 through door extended position limit switches. The LG
valve energizes and communicates the delivery line to LG extension line and return
line to retraction line. Now the oil under pressure is supplied to :(a)

Main LG down lock for preparing it to receive LG down lock bar ball.

(b)

LG up locks for opening.

(c)

LG actuating cylinders for retracting its operating rods.

Once the main and nose landing gears are extended and locked in down position, the
limit switches close the extension circuit and the three greens in the LG mnemonic
frame will stop flashing. At the same time LG Down, sector will be illuminated on the
front instrument panel. In this condition, if taxy light is set to ON position, the taxy light
will be illuminated.

LANDING GEAR RETRACTION


When the LG selector lever is set to UP position, the electrical signal is applied to
landing gear valve KE-53-8 through well door up lock micro switches. The valve
changes over for landing gear retraction and communicates the delivery line to
retraction line and return line to the extension line. Now the hydraulic oil is supplied
under pressure to:(a)

Auto wheel brake cylinder for braking the main wheels.

(b)

Main and Nose LG up locks for preparing it to receive the up lock hooks.

(c)

Main LG down locks for opening.

(d)

Main and Nose actuating cylinder for extending its rods.

At the beginning of landing gear retraction, as the limit switches of landing gear down
position are opened, the LG extended position green light flashes Simultaneously LG
DOWN green light goes OFF on the front instrument panel.

Once the LG is

retracted fully and locked in UP position, electrical signal is applied to door valve KE53-8 through LG up lock limit switches. The valve changes over and communicates
the delivery line to the retraction line and return line to extension line.

Now, the

hydraulic oil is supplied under pressure to :(a)

Door up locks for preparing it to receive the up lock hooks.

(b)

Actuating cylinders for breaking down lock and retracting its rods.

Once the LG doors are fully retracted and locked in up position, the limit switches are
opened up and both the door and LG valves KE-53-8 are de-energized. The valves
will change over and take the neutral position so that both extension and retraction
line are connected to return line. At the same time the limit switches closes the LG
retraction circuit and the three green lights extinguish.
EMERGENCY EXTENSION LANDING GEAR
On the first pull of the emergency extension handle, the electro hydraulic selector
valves KE-53-08 are de-energized and door electro pneumatic valve 702800 M is
energized. This will supply compressed nitrogen to door up-locks through shuttle
valves and opens the up-locks. The compressed nitrogen is also delivered to the door

actuating cylinders and opens the doors.

The doors remain locked in the open

position by the collet locks in the respective actuating cylinder.


After a time delay of 3 to 4 seconds, the LG emergency extension handle is
turned 90 clockwise and pulled to its second stop. In this case, LG electro pneumatic
valve 702800 M is energized and the compressed nitrogen is delivered to the landing
gear up-locks to open. It also gives the main landing gear down locks to keep it in
open position.

In addition compressed nitrogen is delivered to the landing gear

retracting struts through the shuttle valves (the hydraulic line is disconnected) and the
landing gears are extended and locked down in extended position. The landing gear
indication is available on LG mnemonic frame.
