Development of a genetic-based fuzzy control strategy

for seismic protection in one-storey wooden house

structures using magneto-rheological dampers.

Summary of project
MR Dampers have been the subject of research for recent years as they are
those smart dampers. Since then, they have been applied to many engineering
fields including automotive, aerospace, machinery, and structural amongst
others. Fuzzy control is a control system that has been invented to control the
behaviour of MR Dampers to seismic protection of concrete buildings in 2010. Its
main advantage has been that it is more effective than any other control method
as it can deal with assumptions and complex non-linear systems. Structural
analysis of a one storey house can be complex. Fuzzy logic control offers a
simple and robust network to deal with uncertainties and complex non-linear
systems. This project will aim at developing a vibration control system which can
be applied to wooden 1-storey houses of standard dimension consisting of MR
Dampers governed by fuzzy logic control. This project aims at first developing a
structural model of a standard house in ANSYS and the required loads applied to
it. Then, the main parts of the house structure containing the loads are
investigated by designing a scaled-down model. MR dampers together with the
control system will be developed for use in it. The house structure is then
developed by wood.

Developments of lock system for based-isolated wooden houses are conducted

using Magneto-rheological Fluid damper (MR damper). In this system, damping
force of MR damper can be changed by simple mechanism in which magnetic
field by permanent magnets is controlled by falling moment of magnets.
Dampers for cars which can be obtained easily are used taking the cost into
account. Dynamic vibration test of the MR damper is carried out to investigate
mechanical properties and adaptability of previously proposed model. Load
displacement curves of MR damper can be represented by velocity powered
model, and parameters of model are obtained from test results. Using this model,
earthquake and wind response analysis is carried out for 2-story based-isolated
wooden house. The lock system of MR damper is controlled that isolated layer is
locked until 45m/s wind velocity and unlocked at 100gal or 200gal acceleration
of earthquake motion. For earthquake motion, analyzed responses in case of MR
damper show almost same tendency with ordinary viscosity damper. For wind,
responses using locked MR damper decrease under half of viscosity damper.

Magnetorheological (MR) dampers are semi-active devices that can be used to

control the response of civil
structures during seismic loads. They are capable of offering the adaptability of
active devices and stability and reliability of passive devices. One of the
challenges in the application of the MR dampers is to develop an effective control
strategy that can fully exploit the capabilities of the MR dampers. This study
proposes two semi-active control methods for seismic protection of structures
using MR dampers. The first method is the Simple Adaptive Control method
which is classified as a direct adaptive control method. By using this method, the
controlled system is forced to track the response of the system with desired
behavior. The controller developed using this method can deal with the changes
that occur in the characteristics of the structure because it can modify its
parameters during the control procedure. The second controller is developed
using a genetic-based fuzzy control method. In particular, a fuzzy logic controller
whose rule base determined by a multi-objective genetic algorithm is designed
to determine the command voltage of MR dampers. In order to evaluate the
effectiveness of the proposed methods, the performances of semi-active
controllers are compared with some other control algorithms in a numerical
example. Results reveal that the developed controllers can effectively control
both displacement and acceleration response of the considered structure.
