was hoping to have enough money won by the time that vet school
started that I wouldnt have to rodeo from then on, but I needed to
keep winning. I won about $11,000 after vet school started, but it was
a very stressful time there were some breakdowns. There was a stretch
there when I just couldnt catch, and then we did well in San Juan Capistrano
(Calif.), and that helped us a lot.
I felt quite a bit of extra pressure once it looked like I was safely in the
NFR, but Wesley was still about 15th. He was only able to count two rodeos
during the last week of the season, and the week started off with us winning
Kansas City, and then splitting third in Amarillo and Wesley couldnt count
either of them. We ended up doing good at Pasadena, Texas, so that pretty
much secured it for him, too.
Im excited that everything turned out good for both of us. I knew at
the beginning of the year that we both had the talent and could make it to the
NFR, it was just a matter of us clicking enough to win. Wesley ropes really
12
good, and doesnt miss very many, so hes a good partner to have.
My family might be even more excited than I am to be going
to Las Vegas. They were all so nervous that last month of the season,
especially my parents, Tony and Kristi. They will both be out there
the whole time, and my brother, Blair, and sister, Courtney, will be
out there for three or four rounds. Its going to mean a lot to have
them all out there, and mean a lot to them to be there.
Cayla and I are both 10th going into the NFR, which is
funny because the last week of the season she was about eighth, and I was
about 15th, but we both ended up being 10th. For both of us to have made it
this year, with as much stuff that was going on, is a dream come true. We met
at a summer rodeo in 2013, and we are both each others biggest fans. Im way
more nervous when she makes a run than when I do.
It would be nice if we both could win a bunch of money out there. Well
probably try to go on a honeymoon after the NFR, and hopefully well have a
good amount won. But no matter what happens, Ill be happy that we both got
to experience the NFR together.
After the NFR, Im not going to rodeo much the next few years, because
Im sticking with vet school as my primary priority. Its pretty demanding,
and trying to do both isnt an option. I would be open to trying to rodeo
fulltime after vet school is over, but thats four years down the road. It was
very important for me to make it to the NFR this year, because it was my only
chance for the next couple of years. Wesley isnt too happy about me not being
able to rope with him next year, but hell have some good options and be fine
because hes so talented. He tried to talk me into rodeoing next year, but it just
didnt work out for him.

How do you pronounce your name? And, whats the worst way youve heard your name pronounced?
Audy: Its pronounced like the car, Audi, but its spelled differently. Andy is probably the most common way people mess it up.
What was the hardest part about your rookie year?
Audy: All the 16-hour drives from Canada back to the U.S. while me and my partner, Clay Elliott, were trying to make the Canadian Finals and the WNFR.
What are Canadian rodeos like compared to American rodeos?
Audy: Canada is different from the Panhandle of Texas, I can tell you that. The Canadian ones are all good rodeos, theres not much difference. The Ponoka (Alberta) Stampede and the big ones
stand out like Cheyenne and Pendleton.
You recently placed second in the final round at the All American ProRodeo Finals. What was it like to do so well as a rookie?
Audy: It was a good start for this year, and probably the most money I got in one rodeo, right at $12,000.
What does a 21-year-old do with $12,000?
Audy: I bought a house last winter, so it didnt stay around too long. I usually find some way to spend money. I bought a place in Spearman, Texas,
about three or four miles from my parents, so its pretty handy. We live about 15-20 miles outside of town.
Your biggest win of the 2016 season was at the Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up, where you earned $4,080 by tying for second with
Joe Lufkin. What was that like?
Audy: That was a cool rodeo, but I got bucked off in the wild ride. But it was fun and Ill definitely go back. It was good, it made flying out there and
everything feel like its paying off.
You were No. 2 in the Rookie of the Year standings and No. 24 in the world this year. Now youre off to a solid start in second
place with $13,704. Whats the plan for the new season?
Audy: Just the same thing as last year, if everything works out a little better. Last year was my rookie year and Clays second year, so we rodeoed with
some veterans and they kind of showed us the ropes. But, I think we could plan a little better on which rodeos to go to.
Which horse do you want to ride the most, and why?
Audy: Medicine Woman, because if you do your part you will be over 90 and are for sure going to win. If you can stick it on that one, you can call yourself
a bronc rider.

Farm-City
Pro Rodeos
30-year lease
approved
The Eastern Oregon
Trade and Event Center board
approved a lease with the
Farm-City Pro Rodeo recently.
The board had examined a
50-year lease last week that
would grant the mercantile area
outside the rodeo grounds to
the Farm-City Pro Rodeo for a
one-time payment of $50.
After city and county
officials expressed concerns
about how cutting such deals
would affect EOTECs financial
viability, the revised lease
approved was a 30-year lease
for $500 per year.
The lease acknowledged
the rodeo boards plans to make
significant improvements to the
property, and to allow EOTEC
to use the mercantile area for
events when the rodeo is not
using it.

Wrighting History
WNFR gets first set of father and two sons
By Matt Naber
or the first time in ProRodeo history, theres a father and two sons
competing in the same event at the Wrangler National Finals
Rodeo presented by Polaris Ranger and one-third of the
saddle bronc riders are Wrights.
Its been a dream to ride there with my dad (Cody Wright), and
now I got my little brother (Ryder Wright) going with me, said twotime WNFR qualifier Rusty Wright. I never really thought me and my
brother could make it with our dad.
40
Rusty, 21, is leading the pack of Wrights; hes in third place with
$117,942 in the WEATHER GUARD PRCA World Standings.
I dont really look at it as Im ahead of them, Rusty said. I dont
look at it as riding against them, its just me and my horse that day, and
if I win, or if my uncles or brother or dad does, then good for them.
When your family does good, it fuels your fire and you want to make a
better ride. It gets your blood going and you want to ride the best you
can.
Not too far behind Rusty is his uncle, Jake Wright, in fifth with
$91,524. Jakes twin brother, Jesse Wright, is 10th with $76,116; and
ProRodeo.com

Rusty Wright won the fourth round of the 2015 WNFR with an 85.5-point ride on Flying 5 Rodeos

first father and two sons to qualify in the same event at the WNFR.

41
Ryder Wright, the youngest WNFR cowboy at 18 years old, went for an
81.5-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeos Night Watch in Cave Creek, Ariz.
Now hes looking to win the world title during his rookie year.
PREDICTIONS
The horses will be the deciding factor in who wins the WNFR, according
to each of the Wrights.
It seems like all of us do good under pressure, Rusty said. The guy with
the better horse is going to win it because everyone rides so good.
Rusty spent the fall recovering from a broken leg, and hopes to ride as
well as he did prior to his injury drawing Frontier Rodeos Medicine Woman
would help.
If I had to get on one horse to win the world, thats the horse to do it
because youll be 90 or youll be nothing, Rusty said.
The twins were likeminded when it came to their ideal horse at the
WNFR.
Medicine Woman, or Spring Planting, or Wound Up they buck hard
every time and give 100 percent, Jesse said. We picked every best horse in
America to take down there; its going to be an awesome show.
Wound Up, Spring Planting, Medicine Woman, Stampede Warrior
theyre all good, Jake said. If I was guaranteed to have the same trip, I would
want Wound Up since she bucked really good last year. You never know whats
42
going to happen, and as strong as that horse is, you have to have everything on
fire.
As for the youngest Wright, Ryder has his eye on Lunatic Fringe or
Medicine Woman.
Ive seen them so many times, and my family gets so many points on
them, Ryder said. Id like to have a crack at them.
What Ryder lacks in experience, he makes up for in youthful vigor.
I feel like I can take harder knocks than the older guys and then be fine
in the next couple of days, Ryder said. If someone gets hit, they are sore for a
while, but I feel like youth is on my side, and Ill take advantage of it while its
here.
Confidence is another factor in how the saddle bronc riding event will go
down at the WNFR.
I think any one of them could win a world title, and Im rooting for
everyone, including me, Cody said.
Its whoever has the best horse though, because every one of us feels like
we are 10 feet tall, Jake said.
Theres lots of great energy, and every night is an opportunity to make
great rides and make history.

thrilled to have Cabral join him in select company. Duarte and Cabral are
friends, and they team roped together back in the Columbia River Circuit in
2010.
This is a dream growing up, and the difference between Hawaii and the
mainland is there is more access to livestock, trainers, teachers and (rodeo)
schools on the mainland, especially in bulldogging, Duarte said. Thats why
this is such a big deal for Cody. His focus was to do whatever it took to get
to the Finals. I told him his season comes down to 10 days thats where he
can make his money, and this can set him up for life. I also told him dont get
caught up in the limelight, and partying, and forget what you are there for. You
are there to bulldog first, and everything else comes second.
Cabral said hes expecting to receive plenty of fan support in Las Vegas.
Basically all of my family in Hawaii is coming out to the Finals, as well
as a bunch of good friends and people who helped me out along the way, said
Cabral, who will go back to Hilo over Christmas. It should be around 40
people from Hawaii coming out there to watch me.
I just talked to my mom recently, and she said a feed store in Hilo had
a poster up that said Congratulations to Hawaiis own Cody Cabral for the
making the Finals. Its a pretty big buzz right now. My mom bought a bunch
of little Hawaiian flags for people to wave in the stands. I also want to make
it so other kids from Hawaii can see this can be done, and it will open their
horizons and inspire them to make the NFR.

O, Canada!
here will be plenty of Maple Leaf flags waving around the Thomas

Canadian cowboys competing at the Wrangler National
Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER is nothing new, but the
number of our neighbors to the north in Las Vegas this year is significant.
The eight Canadians who will battle for a chunk of the $10 million
prize pool, and gold buckles, are the most since 2001.

battling injuries

njuries are a fact of life in rodeo, and some cowboys are still recovering
from the battle they faced on the road to qualifying for the Wrangler
National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER.
Theres always concerns when any athletes coming back possibly
a little earlier than you would in other contact sports, said Rick Foster,
program director for the Justin Sportsmedicine Team. Obviously, theres
not anything more physically demanding than rodeo when you talk
about the opponent. These guys are riding 1,200 pound horses, and then
landing on the ground at 30 mph.
54
People think a bone heals in 6-8 weeks and its good, but it needs to
regain the range of motion to perform in an athletic event, Foster said. Rusty
should be healed, but maybe not back to full strength, both in major motion
and strength to support.
If I pick up where I left off, Ill feel confident about leaving Vegas with
the title, Rusty said. Confidence-wise, I need my body to be in tip-top shape.
Cody Wrights broken ankle
Cody has competed with a broken ankle since the Caribou County Fair
& Rodeo in Grace, Idaho, at the end of July.
I thought it was broke right off the bat, but I convinced myself it was
just sprained, Cody said, adding that he carried on like normal for a week.
My ankle was so sore that I threw my back out walking around, so I came
home and got it X-rayed and they told me it was broken.
By then, Wright was hanging onto the Top 15, and finding out that he
would need to have screws put into his ankle and take six weeks off wasnt a
route he was willing to take.
So, I chose to tape it and continue on, he said. After the Finals, they
will scrape the bone and put some screws in, and Ill be out for a month or two.
It wasnt the smartest thing to keep going, but its the way I make a living.
By late October, his ankle was feeling better and taping it for each rodeo
was working.
Hes a tough son of a bitch, I dont know how he does it thats a tough
freaking guy, said Codys brother, Jake Wright. I didnt even know it was
broke for two weeks, then his wife said something and I was like What!? and
then, sure enough.

I was real lucky and fortunate it didnt come completely off, Rogers said,
noting an artery was replaced and its back to normal now. Some team ropers
break a thumb or dislocate it and try to put it back and it dont add up right
some say theyd rather cut it straight off and not deal with the stiffness of it.
Josh Peeks broken ribs
Josh Peek won the tie-down roping at the Aug. 31 Pueblo (Colo.)
Wrangler Champions Challenge, leaving the arena with $3,944 and two
broken ribs on Aug. 31 but he didnt know they were broken until Oct. 21.
His rope had broken behind his hand, jerking him out of his saddle in the
wrong direction.
I kept going, thinking it was muscle strains, but kept getting hurt, Peek
said. I struggled for quite a while, and would get better, then go out and get
hurt again.
During that time, he competed in about 10 rodeos.
Peek missed his shot at leading the all-around world standings, ending
the regular season in second place with $116,603, not far behind Junior
Nogueiras $123,786.
I can almost guarantee I would have won a few thousand more dollars,
Peek said. I dont think one injury causes a guy to miss the Finals. There were
things through the year I could have done a better job to not miss the NFR in
tie-down roping. Im not using injury as an excuse, I shouldnt have been on
the bubble toward the end, I should have been in the Top 5.
As of late October, Peek was getting acupuncture and massage work done
on his muscles and the cartilage between his ribs, since some were strained and
torn.
He estimated his ribs will be healed in time for the WNFR, where he is
qualified in the steer wrestling.
It sucks you cant prepare for anything, Peek said, adding a friend is
preparing his horse for him. Im just bummed everything I planned to prepare
for Vegas is set back, and I have to wait.

Quick Study
DEADWOOD, S.D.
Since I was a little boy, I dreamed about this happening, Costa said of
making PRCA history.
Costa fought through the pain of a torn meniscus in his right knee at
his WNFR debut in 2015. He finished 11th in the world standings, and had
surgery after the season.
With a clean bill of health, Costas talent was on full display in 2016. He
won or shared the title at six rodeos, and enters the WNFR in Las Vegas as the
WEATHER GUARD PRCA World Standings leader with $125,523.
This is a result of hard work and the blessing that God gave me, the
25-year-old said of being the regular-season leader. I got a lot of momentum
from winning Rodeo Austin, and I just kept building off of that.
Roping is only part of Costas ability to flourish in unknown PRCA
territory. His skills as a horseman are renowned, especially in his home country.
Costa left his home and his parents father, Vladetim, and mother,
Joana, in Paran, at age 14 to be a horse trainer 1,000 miles away in San Paulo,
Brazil. His skills as a horse whisperer have translated to the PRCA.
A year ago, he helped bring out the best in his horse, Flea, who won the
AQHA/PRCA Tie-Down Roping Horse of the Year.
This season, he changed horses to Sort of Popular (Pouraguaja), which
Costa owns with Fred Werneck. The 8-year-old horse finished second in the
2016 AQHA/PRCA Tie-Down Roping Horse of the Year voting.
Poraguaja is Fleas sister, Costa said. Shes a young horse, and she has all
the tools. Ive won a lot of money on her.
The horsemanship of Costa isnt lost on 2008 World Champion TieDown Roper Stran Smith. Costa lives in a guest house on the Smiths property
in Childress, Texas.
Marcos can make any horse great, Smith said. Hes an exceptionally
great horseman.
Costa acknowledged if he could win a coveted gold buckle, like Smith, it
would mean the world to him.

ome fans ask, What is the NFR Experience? The best way I can
describe it is the only immersive, 10-day, 24/7 Western lifestyle
experience. The Wrangler NFR is the focal point, and creating a
unique experience for our fans is the ultimate goal. Each year we add
more. This year we are adding a lot.
In 2015, the Thomas & Mack Center underwent a multi-milliondollar renovation that included new seats, a wider concourse, upgraded
restrooms and more concessions stands. The renovation is complete.
One of the highlights is the new 36,000-square-foot hospitality area
at the northwest end of the arena, which will be known as The Shoe. It
will feature the Walk of Champions, saddle displays and a 2,500-squarefoot, glass-enclosed balcony with Strip views. The Shoe will also be the
site of CBS Sports Networks rodeo pre-show and autograph sessions
with rodeo legends.
On the arenas southeast side, Cowboy Corral takes over the
adjacent Cox Pavilion with live music, a huge bar and plenty of space to
sit and relax or kick up your heels. A new, similarly named space, The
Corral, which is an extension of the Cowboy Corral, will offer its own
bar and food service.
Further enhancing the fan experience, two new outdoor video
boards were added to the face of the arena and will broadcast Wrangler

Top Gun
CoBurn Bradshaw
As good as Crawley has been in 2016,
Bradshaw wasnt far behind. He is second in
the saddle bronc riding world standings, with
$130,752. In his first appearance at the WNFR last year,
Bradshaw was outstanding, earning $163,577, highlighted by
winning Rounds 2 and 5.
Tim OConnell
The bareback rider from Zwingle, Iowa, is making his third
consecutive appearance at the WNFR. He arrives in Las Vegas this time
as the season leader with $178,964, which is $40,668 more than secondplace Orin Larsen. OConnell has placed in eight career WNFR rounds,
and has won outright or split three round wins.
Mary Burger
Barrel racing always seem to play a factor in who wins the RAM
Top Gun Award. Mary Walker (2012) and Sherry Cervi (2013) won the
award in back-to-back years. Burger, of Pauls Valley, Okla., arrives in Las
Vegas as the season leader with $190,977 and she must be considered one
of the favorites to take home the RAM Top Gun Award.

& Rodeo there earlier this year, and have had a lot of success there, Watts said.
WATTS IS A 10-year PRCA veteran, while Ellerman was a rookie in 2015.
When the pair travel to the Southeast next spring, it will be Watts second time at
the RNCFR he competed at the 2016 event with Cole Dorenkamp.
The biggest thing from what I saw this past year in Kissimmee was that the
National Finals arent any different than what we just experienced at our circuit
finals, Watts said. You need to make the same run you make all year, and the times
and money take care of themselves.
Ellerman says the fact that he and Watts are good friends makes winning the
RMSCFR together even sweeter.
They showed great consistency splitting the win in the first round and
placing second in the second round proving they have what it takes to be successful
at the RNCFR.
Winning in Loveland is going to give us a lot of confidence moving forward,
and competing at a big event like this will help me going into Kissimmee, Ellerman
said. It was a great feeling, because this was one of my biggest PRCA wins. I look at
this as a stepping stone to the next goal.
BOTH ELLERMAN AND WATTS are true circuit cowboys. Ellerman
owns a leather company in Ft. Lupton, Colo., called Texas Saddlery. Watts, of
Hudson, Colo., works as a brand inspector.
Both men went to 30-plus circuit rodeos this season, but neither has ever had
the opportunity to go fulltime and try to make a run at the Wrangler National Finals
Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER.
Its a long trip to get there, but its exciting to be going to Kissimmee,
Ellerman said. We want to win a lot down there so it counts for the world
standings, and can get us qualified for some of the bigger rodeos. Its going to be
good, especially roping with someone like T.J., because we rope really well together.
For Watts, who qualified for the RNCFR with Dorenkamp last year because of
his spot in the year-end standings, winning the average was a big deal.
It was a huge relief, Watts said. Ive been to our circuit finals six or seven
times now, and there was a time or two when
I had a chance to win the average, and it didnt
happen.
The win held some extra significance for
Ellerman, as he carried on the family tradition of
winning the Mountain States Circuit. His father,
Jay Ellerman, won the MSCFR title twice (1986,
1990) and was the year-end champion of the
circuit four times (1990-91, 1993, 1995).
My dad has won the circuit several times,
so for him to be there to see me win it, along
with the rest of my family, made it pretty special,
Ellerman said. Hes been very successful in team
roping in this circuit, so it means a lot for me to
win here, too.
On the strength of an 85-point ride on
Summit Pro Rodeos Custer, bull rider
Jess Davison took the title at the RMSCFR.
The 21-year-old permit member will be
attending his first RNCFR next spring in
Kissimmee, Fla.

BY matt naber
I thought I was a little late when I left, but come to find out I had a good
start, said Terrill, 22.
Although their time only dropped by a third of a second in the next goround, Terrill and Warners 5.2 placed them fourth, while Rhett Anderson and
Kycen Winn nabbed the win with a 4.8.
Terrill said he got nervous when their steer headed for the arenas corner.
I didnt know what would happen there, the Craig, Colo., native said.
Luckily, Warner had it under control.
Our steer was about as good as the first round, but I took another swing
to be sure I caught him, said Warner, a native of Rigby, Idaho. The steers got
tougher as the week progressed.
The final round proved to be the toughest of all, with Terrill and Warner
clocking in at 6.5 seconds.
100

top team ropers out there, Warner said. Most of our rodeos have NFR ropers
in them it sets you up for a tough competition.
Terrill agreed.
I feel like its one of the tougher circuits out there, its got some tough
guys rolling through and it gives us an advantage roping against the top in the
world all summer, Terrill said, pointing to the Wilderness Circuits season
leaders, Thad Ward and Olin Pulham.
They caught every steer they went after, Terrill said. Everyone in the
circuit has been real tough this year.
Placing third in the finals and fourth in the average at the Reno (Nev.)
Rodeo in June gave the duo the confidence boost they needed for the RWCFR
as well as the $5,000 boost to qualify.
We had to work more than rodeo, so we didnt go to many circuit
rodeos, Warner said, estimating they competed in 25 circuit rodeos.
We both know we rope good enough to win, but as we grow up and
have families, its harder to leave, so you try to balance everything out. Id love
to go to 100 (rodeos) a year, but havent been able to make that work. Its a
challenge you travel quite a bit, and I dont do it for a living. Its my passion,
but my wife likes it when the work paycheck comes in too.
They went on from Reno to win the Jerome (Idaho) County Fair and
Rodeo with a 5.7-second run, and the Summit County Fair & Rodeo in
Coalville, Utah, with a 5.0.
The duo spends winters in Arizona, competing alongside the likes of
Cesar de la Cruz and Brady Minor.
Thats a hotbed for team roping, Warner said.
I was able to see how I measure up to the guys who rope for a living to
let me know where my game was lacking. Now, my family is my first priority,
so I work more than I rope, and still try to maintain an edge when competing
against guys who rope for a living its my ongoing struggle.

Changing Course
BY TRACY RENCK
Spears switches
to Columbia
River Circuit,
claims two titles
Valley Sundome.
I like the stock up here, and I usually do really well
in Columbia River Circuit rodeos, so I just decided to
claim the Columbia River Circuit this year, said Spears,
who is a native of Redding, Calif. I had the year-end
championship won before I went to the Circuit Finals,
and I went to the Circuit Finals with the mindset to do
my job.
Spears was the only cowboy to ride three bulls at the
RCRCFR. He clinched the average victory with his 83.5-point ride on Flying
5 Rodeos Super Dave in the third round.
Each bull I got on was a little bit better than the one I got on before,

Due to featured events and equal money in the team roping, some
rodeos may be using both types of alternate lists for different events.
RE-ENTRIES POLICY
Each committee will have the option to implement the Re-entries
Policy at its rodeo at the time of approval.
RIDING EVENTS: Re-entries will be accepted at limited entry
rodeos where the actual entries accepted during the original entry
period were less than the limit. Also, if there was not a limit for
an event, and there were not enough entries after the original
entry period to place at least 12 contestants in each performance,
re-entries will be accepted. A time period will be designated and
published in the Business Journal in the ground rules of each rodeo
for the entries to be re-opened sometime prior to the riding event
stock draw. Contestants that enter during the re-entry period will
be placed in the remaining available positions (available positions
will be defined by the stock contractor and/or committee based on
the number of contestants that entered during the re-entry period.)
All re-entries will be accepted to fill the performances not to exceed
the original limit defined in the ground rules (based on money
won qualifications) or an equivalent of 12 per performance at a
rodeo that did not limit its entries (based on a random draw.)
124
ProRodeo.com
Committees will have the option to implement the following walk-up replacement rule to the ground rules of their rodeo:
In addition to the 30-hour replacement rule, Procom will replace TOs, DRs, VIRs, and DOs in compliance with the
30-hour replacement rule up to the turn out deadline for each performance (3 hours prior to the performance). At this point
in time, the secretary will receive the notified TOs and DRs for that performance along with the alternate list established by
Procom for each event in which contestants were drawn out due to qualification or due to using the no same day preference
or the replace me parameter. All TOs, DRs, VIRs, or DOs (including contestants who notified after the 30-hour deadline,
but before the 3 hour turn out deadline) may be replaced by contestants on the alternate list. Contestants who desire to be
accepted as alternates must physically check in with the rodeo secretary no later than 2 hours prior to the performance. Stock
will be drawn for these contestants at that time, from a pool of animals consisting of the animals drawn by the contestants who
notified turn-outs through Procom (includes DRs, VIRs, and DOs) and the designated re-ride (if still available). If more than
one position is being replaced within a performance or slack, the order that each are replaced will be determined by random
draw. If more contestants check in with the rodeo secretary than there are positions available, the contestants accepted will be
determined by their order on the alternate list (established by Procom). Contestants who are placed in a position at another
PRCA rodeo or event on the same day as the position being replaced will not be eligible to be an alternate for that position.
Conflicting positions for each alternate will also be listed on the alternate list.
A contestant will be responsible to know his conflicting rodeos and will be disqualified if he checks in with the secretary and
competes as a replacement if he has a same day conflict with that position at another PRCA rodeo or event. Positions at other
rodeos that are turned-out will be considered conflicts.

Contestants will not be allowed to give preferences that conflict with positions at other PRCA Rodeos or Events based on the
No Same Performance guidelines (this includes 1st and 2nd preferences). If a contestant gives a conflicting preference (1st or
2nd preference) at the time of entry, he will be drawn out. If a contestant does not give a conflicting preference, and is placed in a
position that conflicts with another PRCA rodeo or Event due to the process of not receiving either his first or second preference
he will remain placed in that position, and allowed the opportunity to find a first go-round trade. Furthermore, a contestant
will not be allowed a first go-round trade into a position that conflicts with that contestants position at another PRCA Rodeo
or Event based on the NSP guidelines. (The validity of all trade requests will be checked for conflicts prior to processing.)
Conflicts with Canadian rodeos will not be checked.
A No Same Performance conflict is defined as: A performance or slack with a start time of 12:00 AM through 11:59 AM is
considered a morning performance or slack. A performance or slack with a start time of 12:00 through 5:59 PM is considered
a matinee performance or slack. And a performance or slack with a start time of 6:00 PM through 11:59 PM is considered an
evening performance. Contestants can still use NSD (No Same Day) or NSP (No Same Performance) as a second preference
and will be placed in positions accordingly. If the NSD or NSP is used while entering a given rodeo, only the original position
(drawn by PROCOM) at a rodeo with conflicting dates will be checked for conflicts, if a first go-round trade has not been
finalized and processed by PROCOM. Once a first go-round trade has been verified and confirmed, (which will be processed
immediately after both involved parties have confirmed through PROCOM) then conflicts with the new traded position can
be checked. If a NSD or NSP preference is used, a contestant will not be placed in a conflicted position. If any one contestant
in a buddy group has a conflict, the entire buddy group will be drawn out, if the NSD or NSP preference is used as a second
preference. If contestants in a buddy group do not use the NSD or NSP preference, a buddy group may be split if one or more
members of the buddy group is conflicted at another PRCA rodeo or event with the preference(s) given at the time of entry, and
is drawn out while the others remain placed in the rodeo since they are not conflicted. This does not apply to multi-event buddy
groups, since the same performance or slack in all events is not always guaranteed. A contestant can add a parameter with his
entry at the time of entry to draw out of all events if drawn out of one, or draw me out if any of my buddies are drawn out.
For rodeos with conflicting dates, the entries for the rodeos with the largest amount of total added money will generally close
first. Therefore a contestant will be placed in a rodeo with a larger purse first and then placed in the rodeo with the smaller purse
if a non-conflicting position is available.
Contestants who give slack as a first preference are no longer required to give a performance as their second preference. They
are allowed to give a specific slack, generic slack, or the middle for their first preference and another specific slack for a second
preference. All other preferences and parameters that have been allowed in the past will remain the same.

finals.
IN ORDER OF SELECTION: Division 1. 90% top money, 10%
random draw based on past exemptions.
NOTIFY PROCOM - Notification must be made at the time
of entry if claiming an exemption from qualification. Anyone
claiming an exemption must have entered and paid fees
at a minimum of twenty (20) PRCA sanctioned rodeos
held during the 2016 rodeo year, unless the contestant
qualifies for a medical exemption. Contestants claiming
medical exemptions must have been injured at least six (6)
months during the 2016 rodeo year. Contestant must not

sanctioned rodeos or events held during the 2016 rodeo

opening. A contestant will not be accepted as an entry at an
X-Bulls Event if he is already placed in a position at another
PRCA rodeo or event on the same day as the X-Bulls Event.
CHECK-IN: Contestants must check-in or notify arena
secretary 1 hour prior to the start of the event. Failure to do
so will result in an alternate contestant being selected and
allowed to compete.
ALTERNATES: PROCOM will establish an alternate list, based
on 2016 money won. (Only contestants drawn out due to
qualifications or conflicts will be selected as alternates).
Contestants who are placed in a position at another PRCA
rodeo or event that conflicts with the X-Bulls event will not
be used as an alternate. Contestants who have originally
entered and were eligible at time of entry may check-in
with or call the venue secretary no later than 1 hour prior
to the performance to confirm their availability and desire
to be an alternate. If selected, an alternate will assume the
competition position of the contestant that he is replacing
and if stock has been drawn he will receive the stock drawn
by that contestant. If a contestant notifies a turn-out (or VIR)
and is replaced by an alternate, the alternate contestant will
be responsible for the entry fees. The rodeo will not count
toward the official rodeo count for the turned-out contestant.
If the contestant that notified the turn-out (or VIR) is not
replaced by an alternate, he will be responsible for the
entry fees and the rodeo will count towards the official
rodeo count. Any non-notified turn-out will be responsible
for entry fees and the rodeo will count towards the official
rodeo count, even if he is replaced. The alternate will also be
responsible for entry fees.
STOCK DRAW: Selection of bulls for the finals will be
accomplished by mutual agreement among the event
representative or his duly designated appointee, the primary
stock contractor, and a judge designated by the Supervisor
of Pro Officials.
RE-RIDES - After all replacements have been made, any
remaining available animals that were turned-out (including
DRs and VIRs) will be used prior to using the designated
re-ride(s).
PAY-OFF: 6% of the total purse is to be deducted prior to
the pay-off and sent in with the results. The pay-off will
be determined on the highest marked scores - 30% of the
total purse will be allocated to the long go-round (which
includes both performances), pays 8 places. 20% of the
total purse will be allocated to the final go-round, (which
includes the finals from both performances), pays 6 places.
50% of the total purse will be allocated to the average,
pays 8 places. ALL PERCENTAGES WILL BE DIVIDED IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE RULEBOOK. In the event that there
are not enough qualified rides in the first go-round a random
draw back list will be used to select contestants to fill the
remaining positions in the finals. Contestants who did not
have a qualified score in the first go-round and are drawn
back to compete in the finals, will not be eligible to place
in the average. Money won by any contestant in the finals
will count toward PRCA World standings, Xtreme Bulls Tour

m about to work my 30th National Finals Rodeo, and would not trade the
friendships Ive made these last three decades for much of anything. Ive
treasured the times Ive had with so many of this sports cowboy greats
hall of famers and weekend warriors alikeand how theyve treated me like
family. Ironically, one of the first guys I really got close to when I was a ProRodeo
rookie has given me perspective on one of our iconic figures I never had the
chance to know.
All these years after we lost Lane Frost at Cheyenne on July 30, 1989,
people of all ages have been intrigued by the fact that I knew him, and to this
day ask me all the time what Lane was like. Even his parents, Clyde and Elsie,
are amazed by the fact that no onenot even kids born long after Lane left
uscan get enough of him. When it hit me that this is the 40th anniversary
of Chris LeDoux winning the world bareback riding title, that same feeling
of interest and intrigue came over me. The guy got a gold buckle in the arena
and gold records on stage while telling that guitar what to do with his riding
hand. But what was he really like?
I got my first glimpse into his world beneath those Western Skies
when I was treated to a spur-of-the-moment day trip to the LeDoux familys
Haywire Ranch outside of their tiny one-horse hometown of Kaycee,
Wyo., when I was in Casper watching my sons, Lane and Taylor, compete
at the College National Finals Rodeo. From the banks of the Powder River
that runs through it, it was easy to see the ranch-cowboy side of his songwriting inspiration that so perfectly complemented the rodeo cowboy
that also was Chris. He didnt imagine that life he sang about. He lived it.
What a pleasure to get to visit with the love of Chris lifea
beautiful blonde named Peggy, who continues to be his biggest
cheerleader in her kind, quiet wayout on the porch that afternoon.
The spotlight was never Peggys bag, and she still steers clear of it. She
traveled the rodeo road with Chris in their younger years, then five kids
later held down the fort, handled ranch chores like a man and made
sure there was a home-cooked meal on the table every night. Peggy
still mows the grass at Chris LeDoux Parkwhere it touched me
