ROMERILLO

PODOCARPUS
GLOMERATUS
Is a species of conifer tree,
native to the montane
rainforests of Bolivia,
Ecuador, and Peru; between
18003600 meters above sea
level. They are Shrubs or
trees up to 20 m. high, with
dark brown bark. Leaves are
25 cm. long, 24 mm. wide;
rigid and almost erect, linearlanceolate or sometimes
almost falcate; light grayish
green and shiny above,
whitish beneath; the base
narrowed into a very short
petiole. The flowers and
tender young leaves can be
added to salads, and the
more mature leaves can be
boiled steamed as a herb. A
mild tea can be made from
the flowers.
ANDEAN CAT (GATO
ANDINO)
LEOPARDUS JACOBITUS
Main Characteristics:
Andean Cats are small cats
and they have a body length
between 58 and 64 cms (23 25 inches), a tail length
between 41 and 48 cms (16 19 inches) and they weigh
approximately 4 kgs (8.75
lbs). They are small, sturdy
cats that are grey/brown in
colour with vertical stripes on
their upper back, spots on
their sides and bands around
their tail and legs. They are
very agile and their long tail
is important to help them
balance when moving around
on rocky terrain.
Habitat:
Andean Cats can be found on
the dry, rocky slopes of the
Andes Mountains in South
America, Andes Mountains of
Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and
Peru. They live above the

timberline at altitudes
between 3,000 and 5,000 m
(9,840 - 16,400ft).
Diet:
Andean Cats feed on rodents,
reptiles, birds and rabbits.
Their main prey are mountain
chinchillas and mountain
viscachas and they will
carefully search under and
around boulders to seek out
their prey.
Breeding:
It is thought that they
reproduce once a year and
they have litters of 1 - 3
youngsters.
ELDER (SAUCO)
SAMBUCUS NIGRA
Sambucus is a genus of
flowering plants in the family
Adoxaceae. In Sambucus,
there are between 5 and 30
species of deciduous shrubs,
small trees and herbaceous
perennial plants.
The genus occurs in
temperate to subtropical
regions of the world. Many
species are widely cultivated
for their ornamental leaves,
flowers and fruit.
The leaves are pinnate with
59 leaflets. Each leaf is 530
cm. They bear large clusters
of small white or creamcolored flowers in late spring;
these are followed by clusters
of small black, blue-black, or
red berries.
Black elderberry has been
used medicinally for hundreds
of years. Some preliminary
studies suggest that
elderberry may have a
measurable effect in treating
the flu, alleviating allergies,
and boosting overall
respiratory health.
Elder is used in traditional
Chinese medicine, dissolved
in wine, for rheumatism and
traumatic injury

THE BAT FALCON

(MURCIELAGO HALCON)
FALCO RUFIGULARIS
The bat falcon (Falco
rufigularis) is a falcon that is a
resident breeder in tropical
Mexico, Central and South
America and Trinidad.
The female bat falcon, at 30.5
cm length, is much larger
than the 23 cm long male.
Adults have a black back,
head and tail. The throat,
upper breast and neck sides
are creamy white, the lower
breast and belly are black,
finely barred white, and the
This small dark bird of prey
inhabits open woodlands and
forest clearings. Bat falcons
perch conspicuously on high
open snags, from which they
launch aerial attacks on their
prey. They hunt bats, birds
and large insects such as
dragonflies. The smaller male
takes more insects, and the
female more birds and bats.
The flight is direct and
powerful. This falcon is partly
crepuscular, as the bats in its
diet suggest. It lays 23
brown eggs in an unlined tree
hole nest.
The life span for a Bat Falcon
is 12-18 yrs.
UNCA
EUGENIA OREOPHILA
Eugenia is a genus of
flowering plants in the myrtle
family Myrtaceae. It has a
worldwide, although highly
uneven, distribution in
tropical and subtropical
regions. The bulk of the
approximately 1,000 species
occur in the New World
tropics, especially in the
northern Andes, the
Caribbean, and the Atlantic
Forest (coastal forests) of
eastern Brazil. This tropical

moist species, is confined to

mountain tops and ridges
between 1,300-1,650 m,
altitude. All species are
woody evergreen trees and
shrubs. Several are grown as
ornamental plants for their
attractive glossy foliage, and
a few produce edible fruit that
are eaten fresh or used in
jams and jellies.
RED-NAPED TROGON
(TROGON KASUMBA)
HARPACTES KASUMBA
It is found in Brunei,
Indonesia, Malaysia, and
Thailand. Its natural habitat is
subtropical or tropical moist
lowland forests. it is
threatened by habitat loss.
The red-naped trogon is a
strongly sexually dimorphic
species, with the females
generally being duller than
the males. The male rednaped trogon is physically
defined by a black head and
upper breast, blue bill and
eye ring with a bright blue
coloured face. He has yellowbrown upperparts and upper
tail with black outlines, a
white breast-line, bright red
underparts and the under-tail
is black and white. Both the
males and females grow in
Length 28 cm and Weight
6078.6 g They have a life
span of approximately 7.3
years. Elegant Trogons are
omnivorous, eating mainly
insects and fruit. They eat a
wide variety of insects, in
particular grasshoppers and

caterpillars, particularly in the

breeding season. Other foods
include cherries, grapes, figs,
This regime is embellished
with small lizards, fruits and
seeds.
BROMELIAS
BROMELIACEAE
Plants in the Bromeliaceae
are widely represented in
their natural climates across
the Americas. One species
can be found in Africa.[7]
They can be found at
altitudes from sea level to
4200 meters, from rainforests
to deserts. these plants can
be found in the Andean
highlands, from northern
Chile to Colombia, in the
Sechura Desert of coastal
Peru, in the cloud forests of
Central and South America,
Bromeliads are able to live in
a vast array of environmental
conditions due to their many
adaptations. Bromeliads often
serve as phytotelmata,
accumulating water between
their leaves. The largest
bromeliad is Puya raimondii,
which reaches 34 m tall in
vegetative growth with a
flower spike 910 m tall, and
the smallest is Spanish moss.
The Incas, Aztecs, Maya and
others used them for food,
protection, fiber and
ceremony, just as they are
still used today. is a
commercially important food
crop. Bromelain, a common
ingredient in meat tenderizer,

is extracted from pineapple

stems.
BLACK-BACKED GROSBEAK
(PICOGRUESO DE DORSO
NEGRO)
PHEUCTICUS
AUREOVENTRIS
is a large finch type bird
found in South America in
Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia,
Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay,
Peru, and Venezuela. Mostly
dry to arid scrubby, often
open, woodland, well-bushed
gardens and similar,
