Background : Abdominal trauma is a major public health problem for all nations and all
socioeconomic strata. The shift from routine operative to selective non-operative management
(NOM) of blunt injuries to abdominal solid organs is one of the most notable trends in the care
of trauma patients during the past 2 decades.
Aim : This study was designed to determine the haracteristic of non-operative management of
blunt abdominal injury to solid organs of the trauma patients admitted at the Hasan Sadikin
Hospital in the Period of January 2011 to December 2013
Patients and Methods : This is a descriptive, retrospective research. We included all blunt
abdominal trauma patients, who are more than 14 years of age, sustained injury to their solid
abdominal organ, and hematodynamically stable, admitted to Hasan Sadikin Hospital during
January 2011 to December 2013. Afterwards we analyzed the patients based on demographic,
radiographic, morbidity charactheristics, and morbidity.
Results : There are total 92 cases with blunt abdominal injury to solid organs managed nonoperatively with a failure rate of 23 cases (25%) . Motor vehicle accident was the most
common cause, consisted of 68 Male (74%) and 24 female (26%). Most patients, 33 patients (34
%) were 21-30 years of age. From CT scan findings, the majority of organ affected was the liver
(43%) and we found normal findings in 13 patient (14%)
Conclusion: The most common cause of blunt abdominal trauma to solid organ which was
managed non-operatively was motor vehicle accidents. Even after close observation, failures of
NOM happened so that such patients underwent laparotomy.
