This week's podcast started with a vocal piece of music called the

Ganga song of Bosnia

Free rhythm "dissonant" harmony, solo vs ensemble texture
The song is from the Southeastern Europe region
Talked about:
Soundscape - soundscape influences how we react with the world. how we r
eact with music.
many people consider elements of their surroundings musi
cal (text reference possible)
Acoustic Ecology - Sounds around you can be added and taken away
Song of the Hermit Thrush - Same phrase repeated one at a lower octave t
hen repeated at a higher octave
Postal Workers Cancelling Stamps - I definitely consider this music. The
complex rhythms were very exciting to listen to.
Musical Elements:
Melody - Pitch, intervals, octaves, scales, keys, timbre, volume
, and emphasis
pitch is the phenomenom of sound where the frequency is recogniz
able. high pitch sounds have high frequency while low pitch sounds have lower fr
equencies.
if pitch is unrecognizable we consider the sound noise.
different cultures use different types of scales and keys
timbres or tone color refers to sounds that are characteristic o
f a different voice or instrument that has to do with things such as properties
of acoustic or overtones
timbre affects our perception of the music. so a change
in timbre can make a piece of music seem very different.
Volume refers to the intensity of the sound of music.
Emphasis refers to how often you hear a pitch in music or even a
word occuring often with a pitch in a song. The shape of a melody can be emphas
ized with the highest and lowest notes.
Rhythm - can be referred to as a regular repeating feature.
Music with a rhythm is called metrical since it has a beat you c
an follow.
Free music have no beat that you can tap your feet to.
Flexible is similar to free since it is difficult to tap your fe
et to since the music speeds up and slows down.

Monometer has a single pattern going at a time.

Polymeter has multiple different rhythmic patterns going at the
same time.
Harmony:
Some cultures don't develop to much in harmony and stick to sing
le lines of melodies.
Harmony involves taking different lines of notes and playing it
together.
Chords are an important part of the western culture of music whe
re it is common to create a chord by playing three seperate notes.
Form refers to what happens next. In which case it is usualy the
piece of music repeating itself with variations.
Repetoires:
A set of music that is ready to play on demand.
Musicology was historically a study of Western music but has expanded to
Ethnomusicology where it studies various cultures of music.
