puzzle as complete with only a few inadequate

pieces. [Cable news + religious dogma = not

--Little Edie Beale

That does not mean we all have to be of the

intelligentsia. Diana Vreeland declared, If we have
an intellectual working for Vogue, hes running
the elevator! I get the sentiment. Pure academic
theorizing, untethered to how we actually live,
comes with its own set of worries. Correlating
literature with our own experiences, however, is
one of lifes great pleasuresit connects us to both
the present and the past and softens the loneliness
intrinsic to the human condition.

t is fitting that Little Edie opens this years

catalogue. She was the first reality superstar and
its cultural apogee. How extraordinary that one
of her successors in the medium has been elected
to the presidency of the United States, the most
powerful job on earth. From Grey Gardens to the

It is an astonishing shuffle of the cards that has left some
questioning whether the electorate was playing with a full deck.
It is also an event so significant to cultural historya primary

ignoring the elephant (or donkey) in the room.
As we contemplate the implications of the election, we seek
answers via social media and the Internet. That is akin to
instructing a murderer to investigate his own crime. Technology
has given us so much, but its dark side is that it has also flattened
us out, trapping us in an echo chamber that obliterates the past
and disparages opposing points of view.

Books enable us to see the temporal world in its proper perspective.

It is a lesson so easy to forget that it must be constantly relearned.
Everything is transitory. Ying becomes yang. Chanel liberates

Time despises entropy, and it is inevitable that good will revert to
bad. It is only in the long arc of history that we see progress. Do
not despair. Take comfort in the words of that unwittingly wise
woman, Little Edie Beale. How tragic and how glorious is the

NANCY REAGAN IN WASHINGTON

GLAM-NOST
Is it possible to get to the top of the greasy pole without
intrigue, or guile? It almost seems as if in this case the
answer may be yes.
--Lady Diana Mosley on Ronald Reagan

The reactionary Kirkpatrick was a staunch foe of detente. To the

Soviets, her presence at President Reagans side was a visible sign
of the countrys unity in favor of the treaty.
Though not apparent at the time, the treaty and state dinner ushered
in an era of relative tranquility in a turbulent world. Even though its
significance is best appreciated in retrospect, the state dinner was
nevertheless a hot ticket in Washington. It was one of those evenings
in which luminaries actively campaigned for invitations and made
excuses to leave town if not included. Itwas easily the most talkedabout event since the dinner for the Prince and Princess of Wales in
1985 (and of far greater significance to history).

DUST-JACKET DUST-UP

Even though Americans and Brits speak a variation of the same

language, it is common for the United States and the United
Kingdom to publish separate editions of the same title. When a
book travels across the Atlantic, the editors typically do more than
simply remove or add a U to words like candor and flavor.
Nearly always, there is a different concept for the dust jacket. One
reason is because the jacket is a means of advertising, and American
and British audiences have divergent interests and sensibilities.
In the case of autobiography, it is also a question of public image.
Consider the case of My Turn, The Memoirs of Nancy Reagan. In
the American edition, the former first lady appears sans jewelry,
wearing an all-American red-checkered blouse, as if she was en
route to a church picnic or Wal-Mart. In the English edition, she
was able to dress more elegantly, as if she were preparing to meet
Lily Safra for luncheon at the Savoy.
The Reagans and Gorbachevs at the December 1987 White House State Dinner

Ronald Reagan joked of the Republican Party, Sometimes our right

hand doesnt know what our far right hand is doing. However, that
is not entirely true. Someone in his campsomeone quite close to
him in factmade it her business to know such things. That person
was his wife Nancy. If indeed the President did ascend a greasy pole
unsullied, it is obvious on whose shoulders he stood to get there.
Her husbands legacy was always Nancy Reagans top priority.
It surpassed any concern she had for her own approval rating.
As Thomas Mallons fascinating (and worthwhile) novel Finale
proposes, Nancy Reagan worked tirelessly behind the scenes
against the hardliners in her husbands administration. She wanted
peace to be his legacy. In Finale, and perhaps in real life, it is Nancy
Reagan who tipped the scales in favor of a pact with the Soviet
Union.
Consider her maneuver at the 1987 state dinner for Mikhail and
Raisa Gorbachev. Mrs. Regan paid careful attention to the political
implications of the seating chart. According to then-White House
Social Secretary Gahl Hodges Burt, Mrs. Reagan purposefully sat
United Nations Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick to Reagans right.

One imagines the English version was more to her liking. It is

easy, however, to see the logic behind the dressed-down look for
the American edition. She spent the previous eight years battling
accusations that she was overly obsessed with clothes. See Nancy
Reagan, A First Ladys Style (p. 7).
Verdict: The English. We like posh Nancy!

It is chronologically impossible that Gene Markey was referring to

himself when he wrote about this flaw with American husbands

extraordinary marital career that saw him wed (and divorce) three

LORD CHAOS, THE LIFE OF SIR FRANCIS ROSE

[Francis Rose] is a man who causes such extraordinary
violence around him. His life story is a long succession
of suicides, killings, fatal accidents. In his wake he brings
chaos.
--Cecil Beaton
If I were to live again in the same circumstances I would
not change one minute of the poetryincomprehensible
as it isof my living.
--Sir Francis Rose
Francis, Age 3, Riding His
Bateau de Fleurs

Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein,

Portrait by Sir Francis Rose

Francis Rose had an unconventional childhood and one of extreme

wealth and privilege. He was born at the grand English estate
Moor Park, near Hertfordshire, and inherited his British baronetcy
while still a child. He was also of noble Spanish descent, and Rose
claims that on his behalf, his grandmother petitioned the Spanish
Sovereign for permission to revive the ancient family custom of
owning dwarves. As a teen, he fell under the spell of Jean Cocteau,
taking his lead in both artistic pursuit and amorous adventures.
LEnsemble by Sir Francis Rose (1938)

What Francis Rose lacked in constancy, he made up for in

originality. An artist and man about town, his name is most likely
to arise today in the context of his friend and patron Gertrude
Stein. She purchased four hundred of his canvases and promoted
him as the next Pablo Picasso. Critics disagreed, and Sir Franciss
work has fallen into obscurity. To some extent, justifiably so. Yet
Francis Roses artistic output was as erratic as his life. On occasion,
there was brilliance.
One of his most successful paintings was LEnsemble, an oil on
canvas mural that was exhibited in 1939 at the Petit Palais Muse
des Beaux Arts in Paris. It depicts those in his circle, a Whos Who of
literary and artistic Paris, including Jean Cocteau, Gertrude Stein
and Alice B. Toklas, Pavel Tchelitchev, Christian Brard, Serge Lifar,
and Natalie Barney. It was most recently exhibited at the England
& Co. Gallery in 2014.

Following a bizarre love affair with Nazi Ernst Rhm that ended
with Rhms execution in 1934, Sir Francis fled to the Far East,
traveling on a massive yacht with his own private zoo. He spent
three years happily touring Southeast Asia until world events again
intervened, becoming stranded in Peking as result of the Japanese
invasion. In preparation for his escape, he weaned himself off
opium and donated his menagerie to American and Japanese zoos.
By wars end, his fortune was depleted and he spent the remainder
of his life living off of friends such as Cecil Beaton. Saying Life,
published in 1961, was not the financial success he desperately
needed. However, it is one of the most quixotic memoirs of the 20th
Century, notable not for its accuracy but for its originality.

After Stein, Francis Roses most important connection was with his
frenemy Cecil Beaton. Yet, it is a mistake to define him based upon
those two associations. He lived extravagantly and audaciously.
Both Stein and Beaton seem bourgeois by comparison. Rose threw
caution (and his inherited fortune) to the wind. His life story,
Saying Life, The Memoirs of Sir Francis Rose (p. 12), is a remarkable
albeit fanciful book. Uncommon, the only task more challenging
than locating a copy is successfully fact-checking it.

A Tale of Two Trumans

Melanie Benjamins recently released novel The Swans of Fifth
Avenue opens with the oft-told but unreliable tale of how Truman
Capote met his best friends Bill and Babe Paley in January 1955.

Is it plausible the Paleys assumed it would be former President

Harry S. Truman, two years out of office, who would be boarding
the plane? We think not. Lets examine the evidence.

Truman Streckfus Persons Capote showed up one day on

William S. and Babe Paleys private plane, a tagalong guest of
their good friends Jennifer Jones and David O. Selznick. Bill
Paley, the chairman and founder of CBS, had gaped at the
slender young fawn with the big blue eyes and funny voice; I
thought you meant President Truman, hed hissed to David.

Truman Capote by William S. Paley

The Credibility of the Source

Truman Capote was a great stylist and raconteur. Effect mattered

far more to him than actual truth. That he said or wrote something
makes it no more or less likely that it was true. To friends he once
wrote, not that I mind inventing details, as you will see, which
might be the most honest statement he ever made.
Bill and Babe Paley at Round Hill by Slim Aarons

It is a marvelous tale, and if factual, a hilarious case of mistaken

identity. But, is it true? The Swans of Fifth Avenue is, after all, a novel.
It is a story of friendship gone awry: how Truman Capote met and
charmed the Beautiful People and then betrayed them nearly as
badly as he betrayed himself. Trumans friendship with Babe and
Bill Paley is its emotional center, but on its perimeter are others
in their circle, including Slim Keith, Pamela Harriman, Gloria
Guinness, Marella Agnelli, and C.Z. Guest. It is a delicious treat
and under the cloak of fictionalization, it delves into the psychology
of its subjects in a way that biography cannot.
This version of the story exists in nonfiction as well, such as in
Gerald Clarkes well-regarded biography Capote. Tru becomes
acquainted with producer David Selznick and his wife Jennifer
Jones on the set of John Hustons Beat the Devil for which Capote
wrote the screenplay. The Selznicks are invited to fly on the Paleys
private plane with them to Jamaica, and they inquire whether
Truman might come along. Bill Paley replies, It would be an
honor. Then, when Truman boards the plane, Paley whispers to
Selznick, I assumed you meant Harry Truman. Who is this?

President Harry S. Truman (Would he have brought his bowling ball along?)

A Tale of Two Trumans

The Improbability of the Supposed Invitee

In 1955, President Truman was not only outside of caf society,

he could barely afford a cup of coffee. He was certainly not the
prototype for presidents who came after him, all too willing to hitch
a ride on the private plane of any affable billionaire who makes the
offer. President Truman rejected all corporate proposals, believing
it would besmirch the office of the presidency. Instead, he returned
to Missouri to live in reduced circumstances. His only regular
income was a $112.56 per month army retirement (presidential
pensions had not yet been approved by Congress). Alas, Harry
Truman was so outside of the Paleys social world that he would
have made an awkward and unlikely guest, and both of the Paleys
would have known it.

Truman Capote Had Already Met the Paleys

Babes pal Slim Keith writes in her memoir Slim, Memories of a Rich
and Imperfect Life that she first met Capote in the early 1950s at a
party hosted by Diana Vreeland. It is possible that Babe met Truman
at the same party, or if not then most likely shortly thereafter. This
aligns with the recollections of Trumans publisher Bennett Cerf
who says that Truman met Mrs. Paley through friends and Babe
immediately invited him somewhere they were going.

Truman Capote by Slim Aarons

The Absence of Follow-Up Questions

After David Selznick inquires whether Truman might accompany

them, it is difficult to imagine that Paley would have simply left it
at that without further comment or question. For starters, he might
have queried, Will Mrs. Truman be coming along as well? And,
if the answer was affirmative, imagine the trs chic Babe lounging
poolside for a week with Trumans salt-of-the-earth wife Bess. Of
course, kind and well-mannered Babe would have worked tirelessly
to make it all seem perfectly natural should she have found herself
in that position (Slim Keith or Gloria Guinness, not so much).

According to Capote, John F. Kennedy also confused the two

Trumans. In a November 24, 1960 letter to Alvin and Marie Dewey,
Capote writes, Sent a congratulatory telegram to the Kennedys,
and recvd. a reply from Jackie who said that at first they thought
it was from Harry Truman until they realized a) Harry wasnt in
Switzerland, and B) wouldnt have signed it love and hugs. Ha! It
seems as if the mistaken identity gambit was a set piece to be edited
and re-edited as Capote saw fit.

Bill Paley Already Knew President Truman

As Sally Bedell Smith details in her biography In All His Glory, The
Life of William S. Paley, Paleys lieutenant at CBS Frank Stanton
arranged a meeting between President Truman and Bill Paley five
years earlier in 1950. It resulted in Paleys appointment to head the
Presidents Materials Policy Commission in which he took a sixmonth leave of absence from CBS that ultimately stretched into
eighteen. President Truman would not have been a stranger to him.

explores a farm interacting with puppies, pigs, turkeys, cows, etc., mostly babes like himself. So charming.

[then] Imperial China, Hawaii, Panama, and Washington, D.C. It stimulated a sense of wonder and curiosity
that burned bright for an entire century. This is a nice association copy: Albert Hadley designed the red lacquer

Before her death in 2007, Mrs. Astor was one of the few still living to have remembered the fall of Imperial
Russia and have a father-in-law perish aboard the Titanic. Her significance to history is she was one of two Mrs.
Astors who presided over New Yorks social order. The first worried about how to squeeze four hundred guests
into her ballroom. This Mrs. Astor was concerned with how to distribute two hundred million dollars to New
York charities. Here, she recounts her life story with equal parts warmth, humor, and noblesse oblige.

Astor that was surely taken by Zerbe himself. Visit our website to read the inscription in its entirety.

good condition; dust jacket is in good plus conditionjacket shows taped repairs, a small chip to the upper
spine, and fraying. This copy is inscribed to Jane and Hillen Koetter, To Jane + Helly with much love, Schiap.
Ever wonder what becomes of a precocious child like Kay Thompsons Eloise? Well, sometimes she becomes one
of the most whimsical, creative, and celebrated designers of the century. In this idiosyncratic memoir, Schiap
recalls her childhood in Rome, the difficult marriage that led to her fabulous career, and her collaborations
with artists like Christian Brard, Jean Cocteau, and Salvador Dali. Includes an appendix titled, The Twelve
Commandments for Women. [Though God was able to make do with ten, Schiap one-upped him by two.]

jacket are both in good plus conditionthere is a minor seam tear, and jacket shows edgewear and minor
repaired tears. It is signed Jacqueline Susann on the flyleaf.
No major publisher was interested in this potboiler about three single women whose quests for fame and
happiness are derailed by addiction and heartbreak. They must have regretted their decisions, because this
became one of the best-selling books of the 1960s. Susann was a master of publicity and popular culture, much
like her uptown neighbor Andy Warhol. He predicted everyone in the future would be famous for fifteen
minutes. Her codicil, as implied in this novel, is they will then spend the next fifteen in rehab.

FICTION/CAMP. Campbell, Lady Colin. Empress Bianca. First Edition. 2005. Book and dust jacket are both
in very good condition.
Nothing is more intriguing than a book pulled from the shelves as result of a lawsuit, which is the case here.
Litigation initiated by Lily Safra, who apparently saw some of herself in the heroine of this story, sent most
copies to the incinerator, and the few survivors were priced accordingly. The book is a barely disguised roman
clef of international society, and the criminal acts that sometimes occur there. A sanitized softcover version
was later printed in the United States, but only this scarce original edition contains the material that provoked
Mrs. Safra to contact her lawyers.

When James Ellroy visited Kim Basinger on the set of the movie adaptation of his book L.A. Confidential, the
film for which she would win an Academy Award, he presented her with a signed copy of American Tabloid, his
novel about the Kennedy assassination. Within minutes, he returned with a second copy, explaining she also
needed one signed by his dog, Barko, thus explaining the drawing in it.

good condition. Book is inscribed on the title page, For Kim, with my admiration and appreciation, and my
best wishes for the film, John Irving. On that same page is Kim Basingers ownership signature.
The first section of this three-part novel was filmed as The Door in the Floor, starring Kim Basinger to whom
this copy is inscribed. The New York Times praised Basingers performance in the film and declared it surely
the best movie yet made from Mr. Irvings fiction. Considering Irving also wrote The World According to Garp,
that is high praise, indeed.

very good minus condition; dust jacket is in very good conditionpurple cloth boards show fading to the spine,
and jacket flaps are slightly trimmed. Book is signed V. Sackville-West on the flyleaf.
V. Sackville-West created one of her most memorable characters in the truly noble Lady Slane, a recently
widowed wife of an English earl and Viceroy of India. She played the part of dutiful wife and mother for the
better part of a century, not because society demanded it, but out of love for her ambitious and charming
husband. His death frees her to correct her destiny and live the simple life of an artist, emancipated from her
status-oriented children who never truly knew their mother and never will. Lovely.

whom the author hopes will enjoy this kind of trip around the world. Lesley Blanch Gary, HollywoodDec. 57.
Tastemakers today who write cookbooks are called domestic goddesses. Though Lesley Blanch, the author of
The Wilder Shores of Love, often approached the divine, there was nothing domestic about her. Deeply romantic,
she traveled the world, delighting in the variety of flavors and smells, no matter how exotic or remote. Here she
has produced a cookbook as travelogue, with conversational-style recipes that make up for in dramatic flair
what they lack in specificity. The charming pen & ink illustrations are also by Blanch.

What a great copy of this classic cookbook, which promotes a sensible diet as well as vegetarianism. It is signed

married to each other). The drawing suggests a conversation between them about whether fish belong in a
vegetarian diet.

GARDEN. [Signed] Princess Grace of Monaco. My Book of Flowers. First English Edition. 1980. Book and dust
jacket are both in very good condition. Book is inscribed, To Julian Crosby, Best wishes, Grace de Monaco.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis edited the American edition of her friend Princess Graces book. This English
edition, however, is better in terms of size and quality. It was inspired by a sold-out exhibition of pressed
flower collages the Princess had shown in a Paris gallery. The book includes examples of the collages as well as
other aspects Graces fascination with botanicals, including photographs of the royal gardens in Monaco. Her
husbands high expectations of decorum fitting a princess meant that Graces ability to promote the book was
limited. As such, signed copies are uncommon.

benefit of ghostwriter) in this autobiography that takes her from New York to Los Angeles and back again, as

Broadway acclaim (winning a Tony for her portrayal of Margo Channing in Applause).

First Edition. 1970. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Book is inscribed on the flyleaf, to
Darling good, bad, lusty[?], gorgeous Jimmy, with much love, Zsa Zsa.
If practice counts, this actress is one of the better sources for how to acquire a husband. She had nearly as many
of them (nine) as film roles. And, one of her fiancs was the legendary lover Porfirio Rubirosa. Though one might
quibble with her talent for holding on to men, this book is full of wit and Hollywood glamour and, occasionally,
even sensible advice. She counsels that to enjoy oneself, take the honeymoon before the marriage. She also
fractures Emily Post, recommending that if an engagement is broken, give back the ring, but keep the stone.

In the 1930s, a fortune-teller told Lady Edwina Mountbatten, One day you will be sitting on a throne, not an
ordinary throne but a real throne nonetheless. Perhaps Lady Mountbatten had this in mind when she inscribed
this book about India in 1944, two years prior to becoming its final Vicereine. The Spectator praised it as a
marvel of compression, proclaiming the book contained an extraordinary amount of information without ever
becoming dull or bewildering. A great association copy.

We prefer this magnificent, folio-size first version of Allure to the 2002 dwarf version that was issued without a
dust jacket. This edition, published while Vreeland was very much alive, is as grand as she was. In it, she curates
a collection of photographs that meet her elusive classification of allure, which she defines and then expands
upon throughout the book. Includes photographs by Beaton, Horst, Avedon, et al. How great that it is signed
to Kenneth who styled the hair of some of the women depicted in the book (Marilyn Monroe, for example).

No magazine did more to popularize caf society than did Frank Crowninshields Vanity Fair. It is therefore

The premise is that behavior once considered boorish now made one a Bright Young Thing. The book both

millionaires. Uncommon.

Edition. 1965. Book and dust jacket are both in very good conditionjacket shows just a trace of fraying.
Written in collaboration with George Mikes. Illustrations by Nicolas Bentley.
Anyone who cannot make it through this witty and interesting book is truly a non-reader. John, Thirteenth
Duke of Bedford, was an iconoclast who had a birds eye view of post-World War II English society. In this book,
he hilariously lampoons the poseurs, climbers, and snobs who are indigenous to that world, while at the same
time providing extremely useful advice on how to become a part of it. The fun begins with the divine cover
illustration and does not end until the final page. Highly recommend.

What is snobbery? This A to Z book attempts to define it in its many permutations, with contributions from a
rogues gallery of reputed snobs, including Cecil Beaton, Lord Kinross, Violent Trefusis, and Loelia, Duchess
of Westminster. The definition varies depending on the contributor, but in general, the gist is that snobbery
resembles light. It is both particle and wave, and it is everywhere. The text is clever and amusing, and Jullians
frequent illustrations are divine. Scarce.

Based upon this humorous but helpful book, Jerome Zerbe did more than take photographs while stationed

Zerbe muses that the main obstacle for the nouveaux riches is the old poor. He classifies caf society wannabes
as Nescaf. A final treat is an appendix listing his version of Mrs. Astors Four Hundred, circa 1965.

Cary Grant said, Divorce is a game played by lawyers. It was not always that way. The divorce capital of the

With the deft and light touch one expects from the great Ogden Nash, this book rightly suggests the secrets to
successful matrimony are humility and a sense of humor. Poems concern love, marriage, anniversaries, and the
differences between the sexes. Would make a great gift for a recently engaged couple.

Sometimes satire is so good that it actually serves to elevate what it is lampooning. Such is case with this book
and its brilliant evocation of the hijinks of the Bright Young Things generation. Baumer had been a caricaturist
at Punch for over twenty years when the decadent twenties gave him the best gift of his career. This book,
published a year before the flapper era came to an abrupt end, is a collection his cartoons that first appeared in

In this, his first volume of published diaries, Cecil Beaton laments, What a fatuous fool I am, living in a largely
self-invented world of wit, brains, and money. It was a realm he continued to inhabit for six decades, so one
imagines he reassessed the situation. However, self-doubt was a continuing theme for Beaton, because though
he was often accused of being a snob, the target of his derision was often himself. It is a thrilling book as Beaton
emerges from his cocoon to become the toast of London and then goes on to conquer New York and Hollywood.

Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Some Others. First Edition. 1963. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in
very good minus conditionjacket shows minor fraying and tiny edge tears.
Novelist Morley Callaghan mused, Im probably better known for boxing with Hemingway than for anything
Ive written. That famous boxing match comes at the denouement of this memoir of the literary set in Paris in
the summer of 1929, and in its own way, it was as climatic as the stock market crash that triggered the Great
Depression a few months later. F. Scott Fitzgerald was on his way down; Ernest Hemingway on his way up; and
Callaghan was friends with both. It is an insightful account of their friendships with each other and himself.

This clever satire that eventually became a star-vehicle for Marilyn Monroe was one of the best-selling books
of 1920s. It was also critically acclaimed. Those singing its praises included Edith Wharton and James Joyce.
Peppered with 1920s slang, the narration is from the perspective of an American flapper whose romantic life
never veers too far from her financial desires, leading to a series of adventures both stateside and in Europe.

Draper Charles Cavers, Esquire Late of Bond Street London, West. First Edition. 1933. Book and dust jacket are
both in very good conditionjacket shows a mild discoloration to the spine.
The humor is dry but delectable in this book about fashionable London in the frenetic 1920s. It is a faux-diary,
purportedly written by a draper (dressmaker). The diarist is a dandy. He adores women but only to dress them,
and they never veer far from his sentiment, as he opines on a variety of subjects relevant to that era, such as
nightclubbing, the Season, raising hemlines, beauty, etc. As to marriage, he laments that the bridal dresses he
creates are more enduring than the blessings of the Church.

THE THIRTIES. [Signed] Beaton, Cecil. Cecil Beatons New York. First American Edition. 1938. Book is in
very good minus condition. The dust jacket is a reproduction. Book is signed Best wishes, Cecil Beaton.
What is sometimes forgotten about Cecil Beaton is that he was a first-rate journalist. His meticulous
photographers eye translated easily to the page. But, post-World War II (or definitely post-Garbo), he became
an adult, and thereby grew out of the boundless enthusiasm that characterized his youth. In early work, such as
this, he has mastered dialogue and nuance but has not yet conquered his enthusiasm. The energy and excitement
of Art Deco New York practically leap from the page. The book is decorated with drawings and photographs
(also by Beaton) and includes chapters on fashion, society, theatre, music, etc.

How extraordinary that Londons best diarist since Pepys was actually born an AmericanHenry Channon. He
relocated from Chicago to London in 1918 and married well (to a Guinness heiress), became a British citizen,
and embarked on a career in politics. He was the ultimate insider in the 1920s and 1930s, and his diaries are
full of references to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and the Abdication Crisis, as well frequent mentions of
one-of-a-kind personalities like Duff and Diana Cooper and Emerald Cunard.

Book is warmly inscribed To Edmond, friend + guru, with much love, from Daphne. Laid in is a full-page,
handwritten letter addressed to Monsieur Edmond Colomb de Daunant and signed Daphne.
Daphne Fielding, having had friends in common with both mother and daughter, writes about the Cunards
from a uniquely personal viewpoint. A trove of personal reminisces and anecdotes make the inimitable Lady
Cunard come alive. Yet, a hagiography it is not. Fielding makes no secret of Emeralds aversion to motherhood
and how it contributed to daughter Nancys later difficulties.

W.C. Fields quipped, Once, during Prohibition, I was forced to live for days on nothing but food and water. He

THE THIRTIES. Horst, Horst P. Salute to the Thirties. First Edition. 1971. Book and dust jacket are both in
very good conditionjacket is price-clipped. Foreword by Janet Flanner. Photographs by Horst and George
Hoyningen-Huene. Notes on the plates by Valentine Lawford.
If there was any doubt that the 1930s were the centurys most glamorous decade (how strange it was also the
most turbulent), this gorgeous book of photographs puts the issue to rest. Its subjects include many of those
that made the decade so remarkableGertrude Stein, Jean Cocteau, Marlene Dietrich, the Duchess of Windsor,
Chanel, Elsie de Wolfe, Josephine Baker, Babe Paley, et al. And, with its heavy paper stock and photogravure
plates, even the production quality evokes that era.

Sir Francis inherited a fortune and was a talented artist, a charmed combination that opened many doors.
That most were ultimately slammed in his face in no way diminishes the appeal of this original and outrageous
memoir. In spite of traveling with his personal zoo (including an elephant), he managed to be present for every
major event of the turbulent 1930s, from Paris to Germany to China and back again. He might not understand
himself, but he perfectly captures those he encounters (Gertrude Stein, Adolph Hitler, F. Scott Fitzgerald, et al.).

in very good condition. Illustrations by Don Herold. There is a third party gift inscription from 1930, which
indicates the recipient might have been involved in the repeal of Prohibition (or was it just a tease?).
With the trend towards decriminalizing marijuana, this satirical, well-illustrated book about Prohibition is
once again of the moment. Gilbert Seldes makes the case that banning a product will only assure its popularity.
Praising the ingenuity of Americans, he discusses the various ways in which those in society dealt with the ban.
He also puts forth the amusing (and true) proposition that though bootleggers might have been the enemies of
the drys, the drys were a necessary evil for the bootleggers.

Contrary to its name, this thick book is more autobiography than memoir. In it, the Duke seeks to set the record
straight about the love story of the century and its resulting abdication. However, it covers much more than
that. He describes growing up at Windsor, Sandringham, and Balmoral among cousins from most of the royal
houses of Europe. He also proudly recaps his greatest achievementthe globe-spanning goodwill tour he took
as a young and dashing Crown Prince.

Wallis, Duchess of Windsor. Rickenbackers bookplate is attached to the flyleaf.
Following the success of her husbands memoirs, the Duchess of Windsor published her own. With surprising
candor and self-deprecation, she discusses her Southern upbringing and the scandal of her first divorce, which
was, of course, nothing compared to that of her second. Social Historian Cleveland Amory quipped, You cant
make the Duchess of Windsor into Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Yet why would anyone want to?

to the clubs success. Film stars, debutantes, and anyone of note all made a pilgrimage there in order to be
photographed by him in the clubs famous zebra-patterned banquettes. This, Zerbes first book, is a collection of

THE FORTIES. Beaton, Cecil. The Years Between, Diaries: 1939-44. English Edition. 1965. Book is in very
good condition; dust jacket is in good conditionjacket shows repaired tears and creasing.
Cecil Beatons second volume of diaries begins as World War II looms, and he worries that a war is specifically
designed to show up [his] inadequacy in every possible capacity. Such a concern is typical of an aesthete/
perfectionist like Beaton. However, subsequent entries prove his doubts where unfounded, as he travels the
world as official photographer for the British Ministry of Information. In between sorties, he writes about how
the war has affected the lives of society friends like Diana Cooper (very well, actually--she truly proved her
mettle). Includes b & w photographs.

An intimate said of Cecil Beaton, I never knew anyone who had nearly as much joy in being a member of the
cast of the play we all act out, and it is only in terms of that joy that one can really know him. The improbable
female lead in this volume of that play was Greta Garbo. He fell in love with her in 1946, and this book
chronicles their romancehence the titular happy years. Other topics include visits to the British Embassy in
Paris during the reign of Duff and Diana Cooper and the beginning of Beatons career as a theatrical designer.

Vogue was in a quandary during the wartime years. How does a magazine devoted to luxe, cover a decade
dominated by war and austerity? patriotically attempting to make the unfashionable au courant by renaming
Spam Ham Americaine and favoring knee sox over hosiery. Includes illustrations by Salvador Dali, Georgia
OKeeffe, Eric, Ren Bouch, and Ludwig Bemelmans; as well as photography by all the great names, including
Horst, Beaton, and Penn. Diors New Look, the big fashion story of the decade, is also covered.

Fortunately, strenuous does not mean boring, and these years are some of Beatons most fascinating. He has
a new maturity and purpose as he expands and adds depth to his career. His society friendships remain, but
his insight into themalways perceptivesharpens even more. Entries on the deaths of Emerald Cunard and
Duff Cooper are particularly good. He also covers the feud with the Laurence Oliviers, the ongoing (but futile)
pursuit of an elusive Greta Garbo, and his emergence as the official photographer of the British royal family.

Beaton obviously thought of these years as his restless ones because his feet hardly ever seem to touch the
ground. Here, he travels the world, visiting exotic locales and also Paris, New York, and Los Angeles. Friends
like Diana Vreeland, Truman Cooper, and Greta Garbo make repeat appearances. He also recounts a grand ball
given by Barbara Hutton in Tangier and an argument with Alfred Hitchcock at a movie screening hosted by
Edie Goetz. There are also descriptions of visits with Coco Chanel and Prince Felix Youssoupoff in which not
one fascinating detail goes unnoticed.

This attractive book falls just short of the lavish production quality of Cecil Beatons Scrapbook, and it is
something of a sequel to that 1930s masterpiece. Like Scrapbook, it showcases a wide range of Beatons talents
photography, fashion illustration, reporting, costume design, etc. It lacks some of the unbridled enthusiasm of
Scrapbook, but in its place is the perspective of a confident man of the world. It includes many pages of b &w
plates, accompanied by the reportage at which Beaton also excelled.

This is Lord Snowdons first book. It was published two years prior to his marriage to Princess Margaret. Though
the royal connection amplified his career, this book shows Armstrong Jones was already on his way. Only
twenty-seven, he was a rising star at British Vogue. It is mostly full-page b & w images (very little text). Subjects
depict the last remaining Edwardians as they collide with post-World War II austerity and modernity: the calm
before the storm of Cool Brittania.

Maxwells biographer Sam Staggs called it a foreshadowing of Vanity Fair. It contains eleven image-filled

1969. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition. Text by Peter Evans.
The Los Angeles Times summed it up best. Whereas David Bailey, as much as anyone, created the swinging
sixties, it is only fitting that by publishing this book, he helped bury it. Released in 1969, it perfectly encapsulates
a decade that had not yet officially ended (an exception to the rule that only hindsight is 20/20). Bailey supplied
the photographs, many of which first appeared in British Vogue. Peter Evans text is in perfect accord with the
photos, and it includes an appendix with a cast of characters. A gorgeous book that has withstood the test of
time: it is a classic.

In this, the final volume of diaries published during his lifetime, Beaton writes, I dont really feel that I am ever
going to come into my own, to justify myself and my existence by some last great gesture. I am likewise certain
that nothing I have done is likely to live long after me. Time proved him wrong, but actually the quality of the
writing in this book does as well. It is filled with perceptive and superbly written epitaphs of friends who were
dying at an alarming frequency in this era. He also chronicles adventures with new acquaintances (such as
David Hockney and Mick Jagger), as well as his misgivings on the knighthood bestowed upon him.

jacket are both in very good condition. Book is signed Snowdon in black felt marker on the half title page.
There is also a third party gift inscription.
The common themes in this book of photographs by Lord Snowdon are its sly, theatrical references. It is akin
to David LaChapelles work (minus the psychedelics). The subjects are mostly from the arts and include actors,
painters, ballet dancers, writers, musicians, and fashion designers. The section with portraits of late 20th
Century leading fashion designers is nearly encyclopedic. Also, there is lovely epilogue to one of the centurys
great ballerinas, Margot Fonteyn. She is depicted in retirement at her ranch in Panama, elderly but still elegant.

ANDY WARHOL. Smith, Patrick F. Warhol. Conversations About the Artist. First Edition. 1988. Edition.
1988. Book and dust jacket are in very good conditionminor writing on the flyleaf.
The title is apt. This is a book about Andy Warhol as a serious artist, not as the impresario of popular culture,
which is more or less the theme of another Warhol book in this catalogue, Andy Warhols Exposures. The author
witnessed for himself the distinct differences between the public and private versions of Andy Warhol. He used
that perspective when conducting over one hundred extensive interviews with Warhol friends, art dealers, and
associates, which are excerpted in the book.

by Ernest Jones.
Ronald Firbank had been dead twenty years when New Directions publishing house elected to pursue an old
direction and revive his novels. This book followed the enthusiastic response to a Firbank collection New
Directions released the year prior. That the jacket is credited to Andrew Warhol means it dates back to Warhols
salad days as a fashion illustrator working for Diana Vreeland at Harpers Bazaar, when her nickname for him
was Andy Paperbag, because that was how he delivered his sketches to the magazine.

Rather cryptically, Carl Andre once commented, Andy Warhol was the perfect glass and mirror of his age and
certainly the artist we deserved. What did we deserve? Based on the additional information provided here, not
much. The recipient was the filmmaker Emil de Antonio. It was de Antonio who launched Warhols Pop Art
career when he suggested Warhol deviate from the then-prevailing Abstract Expressionist style.

first American critics to take it seriously. In all, Van Vechten contributed over five thousand images to the Dance

As World War II claimed the lives of millions, the noted modernist launched a crusade against the real threat
to the civilized world: Elsie de Wolfe, Syrie Maugham, and their obsession with pickling antique furniture.
With great wit, Robsjohn-Gibbings questions the centuries-old notion that antiques are more desirable than
newly designed furniture, skewering Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sheraton, and etc. He goes so far as to declare
Harry K. Thaw a hero for murdering Stanford White, the celebrated Beaux Arts architect. Hilarious but also
informative.

It turns out the A Star Is Born scenario does not always play out in the course of ones lifetime. For best-selling
author Somerset Maugham, that is a good thing. He surely would not be pleased that ex-wife Syrie dazzles in a
lavish 2010 design monograph; whereas, some of his books are now out-of-print, and he is out of fashion. This
earlier monograph on Mrs. Maugham marked the beginning of her resurgence. It includes mostly b & w (but

second husband Somerset Maugham behaved. Painstakingly researched, the book reveals Syries decorating
secrets and offers up many anecdotes not repeated elsewhere. With delightful cameos by Elsie de Wolfe and

noting how stable the trajectory has been compared to its roller coaster counterpart, womens fashion. It then
proposes a classic mode of dress and comportment that resonates today, even as some of its specific guidelines
have relaxed. Includes b & w illustration of its instructions, which are every bit as classic as the book itself.

there are many lesser-known styles, including the Onassis, the Byron, and the Gordian. It is a great reference,

The Pursuit of Love is sublime, but this, Mitfords first work of nonfiction, is a landmark achievement. Much
as Chanel released women from their corsets, Mitford freed the historical biography from the mind-numbing
constraints of inconsequential dates and meaningless statistics. Her conversational style, then groundbreaking, is
now widely imitated. She also ignited a re-evaluation of de Pompadour, whom male biographers had considered a
trivial character. Here, the clever courtesan emerges a great aesthete and influential patron of the arts.

They say that if you are thrown from a horse, you should get right back on. But what if the fall is bad enough that
you are laid up in bed? Well, then write a bestselling gardening book. At least, that is what C.Z. Guest decided
upon back in 1976. In doing so, she established a new archetype: the entrepreneurial socialite. Beautifully
illustrated by Cecil Beaton, it is an American classic, much like C.Z. Guest was herself.

GAY. Dukahz, Casimir. The Asbestos Diary. First Edition. 1966. Book and dust jacket are both in very good
condition.
Lolita has nothing on this spectacularly idiosyncratic novel, a series vignettes about the authors experiences
with male hustlers, circa the late 1950s and early 1960s. The title references asbestos, because even though the
text is inflammatory, the pages have not gone up in smoke and flames. Given the carcinogenic properties
asbestos is now known to have, there are more contemporary metaphors to be made. The book juxtaposes
stereotypesthe author is as anti-government as he is pro-hedonism. Many passages are echoed by todays tea
party, but others are decidedly not.

HOLLYWOOD. Wiseman, Thomas. The Seven Deadly Sins of Hollywood. First Edition. 1957. Book is in very
good condition; dust jacket is in good conditionjacket shows significant fraying that has been disguised with

Even a great wit like Oscar Wilde would be impressed by the frequency and brilliance of the aphorism in this
book from the entertainment columnist for the London Evening Standard. He spent six weeks in Los Angeles
in the winter of 1956 and returned to London with some startling conclusions. Expecting decadence, he found
a company town, which he affectionately but hilariously lampoons in this book. I felt as if I had set out for
cannibal territory only to find that the natives are all vegetarians, he writes. Fun.

who settled in Ft. Myers, Florida) refers to Bergs follow-up book Lindbergh, which won a Pulitzer Prize.

THE MITFORDS. [Signed] Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire. Wait for Me! Memoirs of the Youngest Mitford
Sister. First English Edition. 2010. Book and dust jacket are in very good condition. Book is signed Deborah
Devonshire on the title page.
One of the most interesting qualities of this youngest Mitford sister, who rescued the magnificent Chatsworth
estate from the tax collector, is that though impeccably aristocratic, she was paradoxically remarkably down to
earth. Her style never varied, whether discussing the glamour of attending the Paris collections or the particulars
of her prize-winning hens. This fascinating memoir was the latest word on all matters Mitford, and given the
Duchesss recent death, sadly one of the last.

the flyleaf is a cartoon saluting Mitford and Rachel Carson with the text, Never underestimate the power of a
woman.
This book runaway best seller from the early 1960s won Mitford no friends in the funeral industry. It did,
however, make her a household name. In it, she comically vilified the unscrupulous undertakers who took
advantage of the poor and bereaved.

THE MITFORDS. Mitford, Nancy. The Pursuit of Love. English Edition, Third Printing. 1947. Book is in very
good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus conditionjacket shows minor edge tears.
This is Nancy Mitfords breakthrough novel. The principal family, the Radletts, is a barely disguised version
of Mitfords own. Its lightness and laugh-out-loud funny passages do not mean this is not a work to be taken
seriously. Part of the genius is how the romantic never overwhelms the comic. Style and delight always prevail,
which is also how Mitford lived her own life. This work is only improving with age. Early printings of the
English edition are in short supply and are preferred to the American, which has a less attractive dust jacket and
was released after its English counterpart.

John Betjeman might have loved the Mitford girls for their sins, but history will remember them for their
correspondence skills. How fortunate the 20th Century was to have the intelligent and lively Mitford sisters to
record its twists and turns, with letters beginning in 1925 and not ending until 2003. All six were gifted writers
with distinct points of view. Moreover, they were on intimate terms with Churchill, Kennedy, and many others
who shaped their era.

THE MITFORDS. Murphy, Sophia. The Mitford Family Album. First Edition. 1985. Book and dust jacket are

Ever wonder how the pastoral Cotswolds became the hothouse that produced the one of the most fascinating,
well-connected, and diverse families of the 20th Century? The answer, like so much of social history, is enigmatic,
but its essence is rooted in this scrapbook, which contains both the images one expects to find and those never
before released to the public (the author is the daughter of Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire). Emphasis is on
the personal, but history was never far from the familys doorstep, and the book succeeds on both levels.

This book is uncommon in the United States, because there was not an American edition until 1990 (under
the title Souvenir Portraits). The 1956 English edition is more lovely, with an exceptional Cocteau-illustrated
dust jacket and finer quality interior pages. Originally published in Le Figaro, it is a collection of illustrations
interspersed with Cocteaus reminisces on his childhood in Belle poque Paris. His prose is as good as his
sketches that accompany it. Isadora Duncan, Sarah Bernhardt, and Anna de Noailles share the pages with
Cocteaus parents, the circus, and adolescent school days.

in which they appear as themselves. Most of the events depicted actually occurred. [Of course, Samuel Stewards
life was nearly as outlandish as Sir Franciss but that it is another story.]

Digby (each of her four marriages took her farther east until she was finally the consort of a Bedouin chieftain);
the beautiful Aime Dubucq de Rivery (the cousin of Josephine Bonaparte who was kidnapped by pirates but
became the influential wife and mother of Turkish sultans); and Isabelle Eberhardt.

The jury is still out on who killed society, or if it is even in fact dead. However, we do know who shot it: Town
& Country lensman Slim Aarons. In the book, noted social historian Cleveland Amory postulates that upstarts
were using publicity to make society irrelevant, and offers a thousand anecdotes in support of the idea.

SOCIAL COMMENTARY. Raven, Simon. The English Gentleman. First Edition. 1961. Book is in very good
condition; dust jacket is in very good minus conditionjacket shows minor chipping and a faded spine.
The premise of this witty book is that World War I wounded the grand tradition of the gentleman, and World
War II administered the deathblow. How banal if the author was a beleaguered type, complaining loudly that
he was the last of his kind. How fun, as is the case here, when he freely admits to being a highly accomplished
cad. The inspiration for the book was that if the author, a notorious scoundrel, was able to prosper in society, it
could only mean the English gentleman truly was dead. The London Telegraph put it best, However little else
Mr. Raven may have in common with the angels, he certainly writes like one.

This is Barrows sequel to his successful Gossip, 1920 to 1970. That earlier volume focused mainly on the dayto day social happenings in London. This one, however, acknowledges the impact of the passenger jet on
society. It moves about the world, with emphasis on not only Europe but New York and California as well.
Its chronological format leaves some entries open-ended, but many conclusions are reached by 1980. Cast of
characters includes Aristotle and Jacqueline Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Margaret, Mick Jagger, Andy
Warhol, and many others.

How fitting that the inscription in this copy refers to an aphorism from the book, because this page-turner about
New York society is jam-packed with them. Equal parts wisdom and mirth, they flow effortlessly into the fastmoving plot in which a deposed socialite discovers that being poor in New York is hideously expensive. Most
of the characters are stand-ins for actual Manhattan personalities. Clara Wilamen, for example, is based upon
the authors close friend Jacqueline Onassis.

Pulitzer Prize in 1975.

The affection Land-Rover owners have for their vehicles is legendary, which might explain why this title,
published only in the U.K., is already so difficult to find. Or, it could easily be the appeal of the book itself. A
travel memoir, it is set in the still-unspoiled Africa of the mid-20th Century, as a British expat living in Rhodesia
explores the Dark Continent via a second hand Land-Rover. As the title promises, the vehicle is very much a
character of the book, bravely traversing even the most inhospitable of terrain.

nobleman convinces Bemelmans to adopt the title of a forgotten German prince, and the pair travel from Paris
to the Riviera, trading in on the grandeur of their fading nobility. Along the way, they encounter maharajahs,
American tourists, and other such characters one used to read about in an Elsa Maxwell column.

including its couturiers, artists, nightclubs, politicians, expatriates, Existentialists, etc. Particular illuminating
are his insights into French marriage, and how though it is good to be a Frenchman; to be a Frenchwoman
means to be extraordinary.

This is the midcentury travel diary of a six-month journey through South America by Christopher Isherwood

for Uruguay and Brazil. The condors of the title refer to vertiginous countries nestled in the Andes and the
cows to the plains regions of Argentina, but there is an alternate, macabre connection between the two animals
(described on page 110). The book includes ninety-four gravure images of photographs of their journey.

assistance of can openers and prepackaged mixes. Consider her a champion of the unnatural foods movement.
Hilariously, her culinary qualifications are now in doubt. A former secretary has since disclosed that Cannon
lived on takeout and did not even have her oven and stove connected. Yet, this folly somehow only adds to the
appeal of the booka most amusing gift for the bride of today. Copies in dust jacket are uncommon.

This satirical masterpiece is not appropriate for the rom-com set, but it is a sublime choice for the lover of satire.
Collier, who also wrote the screenplay for The African Queen, relates an absurd love triangle between a man,
his intended, and the loyal and intelligent ape that accompanies him home from Africa. It is an absurd set-up
that is not to be taken literally but instead championed for its comedic dividends and insight into human frailty
and the capriciousness of love. Published in 1930, it escapes mainstream best-of lists, but it is highly praised by
sophisticates like the London decorator Nicky Haslam (Simon Fleet recommended it to him).

into the 20th Century, imagining the challenges Prince Charming and his rags-to-riches bride endure after they
marry. Their problems include the embarrassment of her over-dressed and ill-mannered stepsisters at court
functions, a cheeky fairy godmother that refuses to fade into the woodwork, and a chinless wonder Prince that
is not as charming as his moniker suggested (of which Lady Diana would certainly have agreed).

jacket are both in very good condition. Illustrated by Paul Darrow.
This tongue-in-cheek book of advice offers hope to the bridegroom, assuring him a long and happy marriage.
Ho hum: there are many such self-help titles, but the twist here is that the author considers the greatest danger
to wedded bliss is not an extramarital dalliance but its discovery. Therefore, most of the advice concerns how
to keep ones indiscretions discreet. Published at the height of the sexual revolution, the book evokes Playboy
magazine from that same periodcomplete with erotic cartoon illustration. This would make a fun gag gift for
a bachelor partyperhaps signed or inscribed by the attendees (if they dare risk the wrath of the bride).
