4. What are the various sizes of black powder engines?

5. According to CASA, what regulations exist regarding the use of

model rockets?

Small Model Rockets that weigh less than 500grams Gross Lift Of Weight
(GLOW), carry less than 25grams of propellant can be flown pretty much
anywhere and to any height.

Model Rockets that weigh between >500g and 1500grams GLOW, carry
less than 125grams total propellant (no more than 62.5grams per individual
motor). If you are outside of controlled airspace, you can fly these to any
altitude below controlled airspace e.g. if there is controlled airspace starting
at 2,000feet (609.6metres), that will be your maximum ceiling.

High Power Rockets that weigh >1500grams GLOW and/or have greater
than 62.5grams in an individual motor. It does not matter how high you plan
to fly; you must have an instrument in place to operate high power rockets.
6. What is the maximum height model rockets can reach without a
permit?

101.470 Model Rocket

(1) A person must not launch a model rocket into clouds.
Penalty: 10 penalty units.
Note for model rocket, see regulation 101.425
(2) A person must not launch a model rocket to higher than 400 feet AGL within
5 nautical miles of an aerodrome.
Penalty: 10 penalty units.
7. What environmental conditions must be considered when
launching rockets? What are the main safety issues requiring
attention when launching from the school oval? How can these be
minimised?
The environmental conditions involve placing the launch pad on flat terrain, no
nearby trees or tall structures and no launching rockets in the rain or windy
weather. This can be minimised by placing the launch pad on a large patch of
flat terrain with no surrounding trees or buildings on a clear day. The main
safety issues include distancing yourselves and others from the rocket launch
area and clear attention to any falling rockets aiming downwards with sharp or
pointy fins and nose cone. These issues can be solved by spreading out more
than 10 metres from the launch pad and sandpapering pointy edges and paying
close attention to incoming rockets.
