Why this Workshop?

With 4.7 million km of roadways, India has
the second largest road network in the
world, which transports 60% of good and
85% of passenger traffic in the country. The
construction of roadways require a
significant amount of unrenewable natural
resources such as mineral aggregates, energy
and water, and leads to harmful
environmental effects such as emissions.
Furthermore, once built, roadways need
proper maintenance and rehabilitation,
which also require materials, energy and
water, on a regular basis. If the roads are not
maintained properly, their quality suffers,
safety becomes a concern, and the efficiency
of the transportations system drops, which
has negative impact on the economy. The big
challenge that is faced by the current civil
engineers and administrators in India is how
to build and maintain roads in a sustainable
way such that they benefit the society and
the economy of the country, but do not have
negative impact on the environment. Thus,
this workshop aims at identifying ways for
sustainable road construction.
