VISION

international Maritime Industry demands anticipating the foreseeable future in an effort to raise the standards of
competence and professionalism of seafarers, upon whom the safety of life, property and the environment depends.

MISSION
The University of the Visayas - Maritime College is steered:
1. To produce competent maritime officers equip with knowledge, understanding, proficiencies, skills, and competencies,
as stated in the STCW Code.
2. To instill good attitudes geared in a strong sense of leaderships, discipline, integrity, and moral, spiritual and social
values tempered with a love of God, fellowmen, and country.
3. To imbued a sense of purpose and continuous development of maritime industry needs thru research.
4. To abide and maintain the standards set forth by the International Maritime Organization (thru SOLAS 1978, as
amended, STCW 1978, as amended, MARPOL 73/78, MLC and others), Philippine Government and other maritime
agencies and governing bodies locally and internationally.

Program Objectives:
The BSMT program aims to: (CMO #20, Series of 2015)
a) Provide and equip students with knowledge, understanding, proficiencies, skills, competencies, attitudes and values
to qualify and prepare them for assessment and certification as Officer-in-Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW)
on seagoing ships of 500 gross tonnage or more; and
b) Produce graduates who are qualified to pursue a professional career or advanced studies in a related maritime field of
specialization.
Program outcomes: (CMO #20, Series of 2015)
The graduates of the BSMT program shall have acquired the knowledge and competencies necessary to perform
the following:
a) Demonstrate the ability to perform the competence, at the operational level under Section A-II/1 of the STCW Code;
b) Apply knowledge in mathematics, science and technology in solving problems related to the profession and the
workplace;
c) Work in a multi-cultural and/or multidisciplinary team;
d) Understand professional and ethical responsibilities;
e) Communicate effectively in oral and written English;
f) Understand the impact and implications of various contemporary issues in the global and social context of the
profession;
g) Engage in lifelong learning and keep abreast with developments in the field of specialization and/or profession;

Requirements for Grading:


1. No provisional, conditional or temporary final grade for any curricula or component course shall be given to a student.
2. In case a student fails to take a final examination or submit an academic requirement for completion of a course and
that his/her scholastic performance is not sufficient to merit a final passing grade, give the student a final grade
which does not earn any academic credit nor indicates failure such as NC for No Credit or NG for No Grade.
Such a grade is permanent and cannot be subsequently changed. Provided however, that where the failure to take the
final examination, or to submit the academic requirements, is due to excusable grounds such as, sickness,
emergency, or accident, the student may be given an incomplete mark or INC. In no case shall an incomplete or
INC mark remain for more than one academic year.
3. The passing standard shall be the grade of 70%, to get the percentile grade, the number of correct answers called
raw score shall be divided by the total number of test points and multiplied by 100.
4. Percentage (%) is used in determining and expressing a students raw scores in every examination. The table below
shows a sample of the range of percentage marks and their corresponding equivalents.
