    needlesslyflashy.Inturn,Cianfrancekeepsthedistractionslimitedandthedramaredraw.Thisisassisted
    innosmalldegreebythehonestandgrittyperformancesofWilliamsandGosling,bothofwhomturnin
    predictablyexcellentperformances.MusicisusedsparinglythroughoutthefilmwithGrizzlyBear
    providingtheperfectlofiscoreGoslingsperformanceontheukuleleaside.
    Fromtheoff,thewarningcracksarevisible;Deansplayactingwithhisdaughterandthesubsequent
    wakingupofagrouchyCindywho,inturn,failstoturnuptoherdaughtersperformanceinaschool
    playdontbodewell.Thesearentseismiceventspersay,althoughthetensionsareclearlybrewing
    underthesurfaceandsetthesceneforeachcharactersfoibles.Yes,Deanisacaringandplayfulfather
    figure.Hescharmingandalmosttoodamncoolitshardtobelievethathesalowlypainter/decorator.
    ButthisrevealsoneofDeanskeyfailingssince,inCindyseyes,heisfundamentallyflawedbyhislackof
    ambition.Thisisexacerbatedinthegutwrenchingseedythemedmotelscenes.Inretrospect,Dean
    probablyshouldhavereallypushedforadifferentthemedroomthantheportentousFutureroom.
    Seriouslynow.
    Intheirrespectivepasts,weseeCindyandDeanbeforetheirchancemeetings.Hermotherandfatherare
    deeplyunhappytheyrestilltogetherbuttheymayaswellbeapart.Instarkcontrast,Williamscarefor
    hergrandmotherisdeeplytouching.SetagainstGoslingsownsearchforloveandhisempathictreatment
    ofanoldmaninaretirementhome,itsclearthattheydontwanttoexperiencelifealone;indeed,pastand
    futuregenerationsappeartobeprominentsubjectsthroughout.NotthatthisstopsCindyandher
    daughterfromendingupinasimilarsituationtothebrokenparentalrelationshipshetriesherdamnedest
