UJJAIN
Demographics
According to the 2011 census Ujjain District has a population of nearly 20
lacks. This gives it a ranking of 233rd in India (out of a total of 640). The district
has a population density of 326 inhabitants per square kilometer (840/sq mi) .
Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 16.11%

Climate
Ujjain has a humid subtropical climate, with cool, dry winters, a hot summer
and a humid monsoon season. Summers start in late March and go on till midJune, the average temperature being around 30 C (86 F), with the peak of
summer in May, when the highs regularly exceed 40 C (104 F). The monsoon
starts in late June and ends in late September. These months see about 40
inches (1020 mm) of precipitation, frequent thunderstorms and flooding.

Providing maximum shading through shading
devices.

In the hot period, windows must be protected from solar radiation

and glare. In the cold season, however, solar heat gain through
openings is desired. Hence, shading devices should be movable.

Hospital and Considerations

A hospital is a living organism , made up of many different parts ,

having different functions , but all these must be in due proportion &
relation to each other & to the environment to produce the desired
result

Hospital Design
Hospital must meet two basic fundamental needs:

Must meet the needs of the patient it is going to serve adequately.

It must be in a size and proportions which the owners or promoters
will be able to build and operate
For these two fundamental needs I have prepared the following 9
points or Building Attributes to consider in design according to books
and case studies :-

1) Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness

Promote staff efficiency by

minimizing distance of necessary
travel between frequently used
spaces
Include all needed spaces, but
no redundant ones.
Make efficient use of space by
locating support spaces so that
they may be shared by adjacent
functional areas, and by making
prudent use of multi-purpose
spaces
Consolidate outpatient functions
for more efficient operation
Group or combine functional
areas with similar system
requirements

2) Flexibility
Flexibility to Adapt
Flexibility to Convert
Flexibility to Expand

Be served by modular, easily accessed,

and easily modified mechanical and
electrical systems
Use generic room sizes and plans as
much as possible, rather than highly
specific ones
Be open-ended, with well planned
directions for future expansion; for
instance positioning "soft spaces" such as
administrative departments, adjacent to
"hard spaces" such as clinical
laboratories

3) Therapeutic Environment

Using familiar and culturally relevant materials wherever consistent with sanitation
and other functional needs
Admitting ample natural light wherever feasible and using color-corrected lighting in
interior spaces which closely approximates natural daylight
Providing views of the outdoors from every patient bed, and elsewhere wherever
possible; photo murals of nature scenes are helpful where outdoor views are not
available

Homelike Environment
Meaningful and Worthwhile
experience
Culturally familiar
environment
Natural Lighting

4) Cleanliness and Sanitation

Appropriate, durable finishes for

each functional space
Special materials, finishes, and
details for spaces which are to be
kept sterile, such as integral cove
base. The new antimicrobial
surfaces might be considered for
appropriate locations.
Adequate and appropriately
located housekeeping spaces
Careful detailing of such features
as doorframes, casework, and
finish transitions to avoid dirtcatching and hard-to-clean
crevices and joints

5) Accessibility

Ensuring grades are flat

enough to allow easy
movement and
sidewalks and corridors
are wide enough for two
wheelchairs to pass
easily
Ensuring entrance areas
are designed to
accommodate patients
with slower adaptation
rates to dark and light;
marking glass walls and
doors to make their
presence obvious
All the departments of a
hospital must be properly
integrated.

6) Controlled Circulation

Outpatients visiting diagnostic and treatment areas should not travel

through inpatient functional areas nor encounter severely ill inpatients
Typical outpatient routes should be simple and clearly defined
Visitors should have a simple and direct route to each patient nursing
unit without penetrating other functional areas
Separate patients and visitors from industrial/logistical areas or floors
Outflow of trash, recyclables, and soiled materials should be separated
from movement of food and clean supplies, and both should be
separated from routes of patients and visitors
Transfer of cadavers to and from the morgue should be out of the sight
of patients and visitors
Dedicated service elevators for deliveries, food and building
maintenance services

6) Controlled Circulation

7) Aesthetics

Increased use of natural

light, natural materials,
and textures
Use of artwork
Attention to proportions,
color, scale, and detail
Bright, open, generouslyscaled public spaces
Homelike and intimate
scale in patient rooms,
day rooms, consultation
rooms, and offices
Compatibility of exterior
design with its physical
surroundings

8) Security and Safety

Protection of hospital
property and assets,
including drugs
Protection of patients,
including incapacitated
patients, and staff
Safe control of violent or
unstable patients
Vulnerability to damage
from terrorism because of
proximity to highvulnerability targets, or
because they may be
highly visible public
buildings with an
important role in the
public health system.

9) Sustainability
Hospitals are large public
buildings that have a
significant impact on the
environment and economy
of the surrounding
community. They are heavy
users of energy and water
and produce large amounts
of waste. Because hospitals
place such demands on
community resources they
are natural candidates for
sustainable design.

Regardless of their location, size, or budget,

hospitals should have certain common
attributes.(shown above)

Concept for Hospital Design?

It is considered to be a one line idea behind a building but in reality all great
architecture is more like a novel.
Concept Derives the Theme and Emotions in a building.

Concept
The art and science of designing a hospital anywhere is a complex affair.
Beyond technical requirements that modern medicine demands and rigid
functional relationships between different medical departments, the
designer has to cope with a host of more subjective issues like the anxiety of
the patient, the stressful work environment of the staff and the need to build
a sustainable and healing building; Hippocrates injunction to the medical
community being, First, do no harm.
So, my concept for this building is to associate all the building attributes with
all requirement of the project(In the list of requirement commercial areas
are also present )
All the functions will summit according to the hierarchy and will form a
system which will be running without any loophole.
Initial focus is the U shape activity in which a patient involve when he first
come to hospital. It is a patient experience in the hospital. This experience is
the most important thing for an architect to consider.

Form of a Hospital
The basic form of a hospital is, ideally, based on its functions :

bed-related inpatient functions

outpatient-related functions
diagnostic and treatment functions
administrative functions
service functions (food, supply)
research and teaching functions

Zoning
The different areas of a hospital shall be grouped according to zones as
follows:-

Zoning
Outer Zone

areas that are immediately accessible to the public: emergency service,

outpatient service, and administrative service. They shall be located near
the entrance of the hospital.

Second Zone

areas that receive workload from the outer zone: laboratory, pharmacy,
and radiology. They shall be located near the outer zone.

Inner Zone

areas that provide nursing care and management of patients: nursing

service. They shall be located in private areas but accessible to guests.

Zoning
Deep Zone

areas that require asepsis to perform the prescribed services: surgical

service, delivery service, nursery, and intensive care. They shall be
segregated from the public areas but accessible to the outer, second
and inner zones.

Service Zone

areas that provide support to hospital activities: dietary service,

housekeeping service, maintenance and motor pool service, and
mortuary. They shall be located in areas away from normal traffic.
