1.0 PURPOSE

This PSV Projects Grinding Procedure is to clearly identify the


correct sequence of steps to be followed in the execution of
grinding tasks.
2.0 SCOPE

All process aspects related to grinding only.


3 . 0 OBJECTIVE
The objective is to ensure that all personnel are suitably trained
in the execution of dangerous hazardous tasks through the
instructions to eliminate unsafe acts which could cause injury to
personnel and I or damage to plant and equipment ..
4 . 0 REFERENCE

5.0 RESONSIBILITIES

The Director of PSV PROJECTS shall be overall responsible for the


implementation of this Work Instruction Procedure.
It is the responsibility of the Site Managers & Project Supervisors
and Safety Officers to ensure that this Procedure is maintained as
prescribed.

The assigned and designated personnel/Grinding


Operator shall be
responsible for their assigned task and the general concept of
Quality and Safety awareness.
PSV's Human Resources Manager shall be responsible and accountable
for the newly assigned personnel appraised to determine their
capability and training requirement.
The Quality Assurance Manager shall be responsible to ensure
compliance to this Procedure through the application of quality
audits.
6. 0 PROCEDURE

6.1 Actions
6.1.1

Provide Personal Protection Equipment (P.P.E)

6.1.2

Ensure that P.P.E


items are serviceable and
utilised which include Hand Gloves & Eye
protection.

6.1.3

Perform the following machine inspections and


machine defects checks to prevent injury to
operator and damage to plant and equipment:

Casing
Safety Guard
Electric Operating Switch
Power Point Plug
Electric Cord
Grinding Disc
Locknut and purpose made washer

6.1.4

Perform visual inspections on discs issued that


could disintegrate due to inferior Quality, such
as cracks and chips.

6.1.5

Check the correct disc & size for the job and
material to be worked.

Transport.
Transport machine to work place in a safe manner:

Do not carry the machine by its cord.


Do not drop the machine.
Do not work the machine exposed to rain.
Keep the machine out of wet damp conditions.

Work Area
Examine the work area for safe work & environment conditions.
Check the following:-

Power Supply.
Safe access & working platform e.g. scaffolding. Ensure
firm grip and flooring.
Free of combustible material in immediate working area.
Free of water
Safety of co-workers
Adequate lighting & ventilation.

Ensure that the work area is kept clean and clear to prevent
injury to operator due to loss of balance by tripping.
6.4 Ensure that P.P.E.

is correctly applied by the operator and


assistant to prevent injuries
caused by sparks.

6.5

Before grinding operations, ensure that screens are used and


in place, to prevent flying
Sparks, metal particles and disc fragments that can injure coworkers.

6.6

Ensure that the ON / Off machine switch is in the Off


Position before connecting to power supply to prevent
an accident due to a uncontrolled machine starting.

6.7

Switch the machine on and let it run freely for a few


seconds before performing the the activity as required.

6.8

Ensure that:~

At all times a controlled position is taken on during the


working operation.
~ The switch is not locked in the operation position other
than by the lock switch.
~ The safety guard is not removed.
~ By working the machine is not forced or the disc twisted.
6.9

When changing discs, disconnect the power supply first to


prevent a un-intentional start

6.10 On switch off and before placing machine down, ensure the

disc is stationary.
Disconnect the machine from power source and clear the area
on job completion
6.11 Do not leave the machine unattended while the machine is

connected to the power supply.


6.12 Do not grind other than 'sparking' material to prevent the

integration of the disc caused by clogging.


6.13 On completion of shift, remove the disc from the machine
6.14 Store the machine in a dry, safe lockable facility to

prevent loss and damage by Unauthorised tempering.
