Mornings in Jenin
The story shows a side that I usually try to avoid thinking about.
The idea that I can have a Jewish friend confuses me a lot. Will I
be nice to him and treat him as any other friend or Ill be biased.
The friendship between Hassan and Ari made me think again that
there could be some Jews who are not biased or even could be
kind. The story also stresses on the holocaust and how this could
be reason for the hatred of Jews to Arab people. Another point
that is stressed in the story is that the Arab have taken Jews as
refugees but Jews betrayed them. From linguistic point of view, I
really liked the story and how it was designed to fit in Arab
culture. What really amazed me that the writer used some words
like InshaAllah? This feels me as if the writer knows our culture
well. Finally, Im really exciting about the ending of the story and
what will happen to both of Hassan and Ari and if their friendship
will last.

Q&A
1) - Why did Hassan insist on going all the way to Jerusalem? Does this
meet your expectations? What does this tell you about Hassan?

He insisted on going to Jerusalem to meet his friend Ari. That

was normal to me since the story showed how close friends
they are and this action is a normal one from a good friend.
It shows how loyal and true friend is Hassan
2) The image of Jews in Mornings in Jenin is balanced; no
generalizations are made; while some of them are presented as
villains, others are presented as good. Comment contrasting the
characters of Moshe and Ari.

The story presented a very fair and balanced image of Jews.

It showed an example of a very good and loyal friend who is
Ari. It was obvious from Aris deeds that he is completely
loyal to his friend Hassan. On the other hand, it showed
Moshe who thinks that he is superior and better than all
other Arabs. This was obvious in his description to Dalia as a
filthy Arab. Also his action, when he kidnapped Dalias son
because he couldnt accept the fact that this Arab woman
could have two children while he has none.
