DRAINAGE SYSTEM

OBJECTIVE
The objective of this report is to provide an engineering design calculation for the
establishment of open and closed channel drainage system to accommodate with the authorities
approval.
LOCATION

Drainage system

The location plan and drainage layout of this project

DESIGN METHOD
The design method for this calculation is based on the guideline of Urban Stormwater
Management Manual for Malaysia or Manual Saliran Mesra Alam Malaysia (MSMA),
published by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Malaysia.
DESIGN CRITERIA
RAINFALL INTENSITY DURATION FREQUENCY (IDF)
The design rainfall intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) relationship were developed from data
obtained from:
a) Design Rainfall (Volume 4 - Design Fundamentals).
b) Flow Estimation and Routing (Volume 5 - Runoff Estimation)

The equation used for IDF curves is in polynomial expressions for estimation of the average
rainfall intensity throughout the 35 main cities/towns in Malaysia. The equations are as follows:

ln(RIt) = a + b ln(t) + c (ln(t))2 + d (ln(t))3

where;
R

It = the average rainfall intensity (mm/hr) for ARI and duration t

R = average return interval (years)

t

= duration (minutes)

Notes:
(a) a,b,c and d are fitted coefficients for IDF equation which depends on ARI and
location
(b) IDF for Keluang is adopted for the drainage system design.

If t < 30 minutes, an estimation of intensity using the above equation would result in
large error. Therefore the following modified equation is used to derived the rainfall for
t < 30 minutes:

PD = P30 FD (P60 - P30)

where;
P30,60 = 30 minutes and 60 minutes duration rainfall depth obtained from
polynomial expression

FD

= modification factor for storm duration, values can be obtained

from Table 13.3 (Volume 4, Chapter 13) as a function of 2P24h, the
2-year ARI 24-hour rainfall depth.

AVERAGE RECURRENCE INTERVALS (ARI)

Major and minor system approach shall be adopted for the design of stormwater drainage
system depending on the type of development. The following shows the event ARI
adopted for the drainage design:

Type of development

: Medium density (5 to 20 dwelling units/ha)

Minor system ARI

5 years

Major system ARI

50 years

Use of Manning's Equation

Q = (1.49/n)(A)(Rh2/3)(S1/2)

where:
V = velocity, (m/s)
n = Manning's roughness coefficient

A = cross-sectional area of flow, (m2)

R = hydraulic radius; R = A/P
P = wetted perimeter (m)
S = slope of channel bed, (m/m)
Q = flow, (m3/s)

MONSUN DRAIN AND BOX CULVERT

Proposed monsoon drain and box culvert sizes are as follows:

Box culvert

1650 mm A X 1000 mm D

Jumlah Item B/Q (4) :

CONCLUSION
From the design calculation, the peak pre-development and post development flow for
the site catchment area can be summarised as below:

Q pre-development

2775.791/s

Q post-development

4115.82 l/s

The drainage system proposed for this project therefore is adequate and suitable to cater
the peak flow rate of surface water and catchment runoff. Area of the site is less than 25
acres, therefore OSD ( on-site detention ) system is not provided. Final discharge of this
drainage system shall be connected to the existing 900mm drain in front of the site area.
