PROCEDURE

Prior to lesson

Have white paper for the students to draw on.

Hand out Duotangs to students and ask them to write
their name on the top of the first page in their duotang.
Read the description of the unit with the class.
Read the description of the reflections with the class.
(ask students to cross out where it says double, and
instead write single).

Ask the students to come and sit up at the front in a


reading circle. I will read the story out loud and have the
students follow along in their duotangs.
Ensure students are paying attention to the story.
Discussion
Ask students what they thought of the story. Use the
following questions as prompts.
1. Why do you think Mrs. Jones handles the situation the way she
does in the story? What is she trying to accomplish?
2. How do you think this experience is likely to affect Roger?
3. 2. Why do you think Mrs. Jones makes a point of getting Roger
to wash his face? Why does she give him food?
4. What does Mrs. Jones mean when she says that shoes got by

5. Why do you think Roger cant say thank you to Mrs. Jones
as he is leaving?
Students do not have to raise their hand to answer these
questions. Ask the students if they agree with other
responses to the questions.

Explain writing reflections again


Ask on a scale of 1 to 5 if the students understand
what they are supposed to do.
Remind students to use the prompts on the
reflections description.

Help students as they work and if they have questions


about the feedback. Remind students that when they
write business letters it should be in a formal tone.
If students finish early, they can begin looking at the
response assignment and start brainstorming
characteristics of Mrs. Jones and Roger.

they like it?
Ask students how far they are on their reflections.
