The Wonderful World of Economics

Do you have money in your pocket? Do you make daily decisions on how to
spend that money? If both of these answers are yes then you are
considered an economist!
Economists, or people who work in economics, cover a variety of fields
normally based around production and consumption of money. They are at
the heart of all businesses and act as the driving force behind every
company in operation.
For every Target or
Walmart store you shop
at, there is an
Economist working
behind the scenes to
insure the company is
moving in a positive
direction towards
profitability.
If you think about how
many businesses there
are today in the world
you shouldnt be surprised, then by how many economists there are working
for all of them. Economists are everywhere! Look at the shoes or shirt you
are wearing right now, there is an economist out there deciding how many
models of that shoe or shirt to produce. Theres also an economist deciding
how much to charge for that model of shoe or shirt. And theres another
economist deciding where to sell them from! Sounds like a lot of Economists
right! You can see now they play a role in every aspect of the business cycle!
With that said, you may be wondering what is it exactly that they are doing?
What does the job actually entail? And what can I do with an Economics
degree? Well, let me tell you, its just about anything!

Economics Explained
If you look Economics up in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, youll find the
definition: the science concerned with the process of production,
consumption, and transfer of wealth. Simply put, this means economics is
anything dealing with money. If you havent noticed already, money is
everywhere and plays a role in almost everything we do as humans! And did
I mention that the words economics and economy share the same root of
econ? That means they can be derived from each other, or you could say
that they go together hand in hand! Taking this idea one step further you can
say that the open market and free trade system our United States
government operates, is all run by economists!

Economists analyze data from all sorts of fields such as sales, population
distributions, production costs of products, salaries of employees, or financial
investments and calculate results to predict what will be the most beneficial
or productive route to take in the future. This is critical to businesses as they
dont want to lose moneyever!
Any business in operation utilizes an economist to guide company decisions.
Where to spend more money, who should be targeted more in sales, where
the company should expand to. All these decisions and many more fall on
the shoulders of economists. Because so many important financial decisions
are made by economists, the demand for graduates with economic majors
has steadily increased and will continue to do so for years to come.
One of the reasons demand for Economics graduates is rising and one of the
main job fields in Economics is working with the stock market. Many
Economists study trends in the market and calculate predictions for good and
bad investments. They accumulate data over a period of months, weeks,
days, or even hours and calculate just what is happening in the market
through a series of mathematical formulas. Economists in this type of field
often have more financial and statistical background experience making it an
even more valuable job. This a critically important job in the economic field
and in the working class in general.
This isnt the only job available in the Economics field though, nor is it the
only important one! There are many others such as the ones listed below
