Management Plan
My general classroom management philosophy is to create an atmosphere where students
feel safe, comfortable, and excited to express themselves. I believe it is important to be
accessible to students and to be a safe resource who they know is trustworthy and cares about
their best interest. Building relationships with each of my students is essential.
Ideally, my classroom would have plenty of natural light, and many plants. I would love
to have tables in a circular fashion in order to get students interacting and sharing their process. I
will work to create natural light, greenery, and circular working spaces in any classroom I teach
in.
I will stand outside the door between classes, and when students enter the class each
period, I will greet them with a smile and a brief conversation. As students exit class, I will give
them a high five and a smile.
In order to create a safe environment, expectations will be an important part of the
classroom. I will start with the famous one rule of do anything as long as it doesnt negatively
impact anyone in the world. I will have the class help to create a set of expectations so they can
take ownership of what that looks like. I will use the CHAMPS model with conversation, help,
activity, movement, and participation. I will have a three different sets of expectations while
explaining projects, having work time, and doing critique. After each break and at least three
times per year I will remind students of the expectations.
To get students attention in a silent and transportable way, I will use an index finger
raised with a hand until I get all eyes and ears.
In order to create a safe classroom culture, predictability will be an important part of
organizing schedules. I will have an established order of events for each day and write it on the
board with the learning target so students will know what to expect.
Awareness with language while interacting with students is important. When commenting
on students personal expression, I will use the language I noticed rather than I love in order
to make it about them and noticing them. In regards to art, I will be conscious in responding to
student artwork by giving reason for my comments. For example, Jimmy, I like the way you
made the grass a light green, it gives me the feeling of fresh spring air. This way students have
reasoning behind comments rather than just I like that.
The same language goes for response to positive behavior in the art classroom. I will
provide positive feedback with reason. For example, Connor, I appreciate your focus in the
classroom today, it is really helping the whole class work together. In response to negative
student behavior, I will take a Love and Logic approach. Depending on grade level, I will tell
them to meet me after class and not worry about it, or take them aside at an appropriate time. I
will ask them how I can help them, what is going on, and respond with things such as Wow
youre in a tough spot, would you like to know what other students have done in the past? Non

negotiables in my classroom will be racial or social slurs of any kind, and in that case, I will
immediately take a student into the hall with me, address the behavior, and send them to the
office if need be. It is important to me to also correct every student regardless of the degree of
negative behavior in order to hold all students accountable. For me as an empathetic, caring
individual, a huge part of this is checking in with how students are doing. I will make it clear that
I am available and for them to let me know if there is anything I can do to support their growth.
In order to be a resource to my students, I will make it clear that I am available after
school if they need help, or if they want to talk. This will give me time before school for silent
work, and at lunch to re-group my own energy.
I will collaborate with colleagues as much as possible to create a conducive art
department. This would include planning together and touching base on teaching concepts.

Welcome to Ms. Willows Art Classroom!

AVAILABILITY
I am available after school until 5, and you can email me anytime at
wbrook@rams.colostate.edu, or call me at 7206213884.
EXPECTATIONS
In my class, I have one rule:
Do anything that doesnt negatively impact anyone in the world.
In this class, we will be working to create an environment where every student feels safe to
express themselves. In order to create a mutual understanding, we have developed a set of class

expectations. If any of these fail to be met, a one on one meeting will occur and we will work
together to find a way to help students meet the expectations. If behavior doesnt change after
that, family will be contacted, and after that administration.

ATTENDANCE
Attendance is mandatory to art class. Missing class puts a student behind on classwork.
Unexcused absences will drop a students grade.
TECHNOLOGY
Visual research will happen often in art class. Cell phones are permitted for listening to music
and doing art based research only.

RESOURCES
When checking out any material from the art room, students are expected to sign and date the
sign out sheet posted in the closet with date and material when they check out and when they
return it.
DIFFERENTIATION
Giving choices will provide for the most accessible in my classroom. If a student has a desire to
express themselves in a way that I am not providing access to, they are welcome to meet with me
directly.
PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
Students are expected to take responsibility of their own learning in my class. Each student will
have a personal website where they will document their work process.

Please sign, date, and return to Miss Willow. Thank you and I look forward to working with you
this semster!
