Choose among the materials and activities offered to build a lesson on the properties of
matter that allows students to identify various physical and chemical properties of
matter. The time will depend on the activities, strategies, and reinforcement activities
selected.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION
/ KEY VOCABULARY :
Essential Question: What are physical and chemical properties of matter?
Key Vocabulary: physical property, chemical property, solubility, thermal conductivity,
electrical conductivity, density, malleability, luster, melting point, boiling point,
magnetic attraction

LESSON LEAD IN /
OPENING :

ELICIT
OPTIONS:
Opening Your Lesson (10 minutes)
Begin the lesson by assessing students' prerequisite and prior knowledge.
Prerequisite Knowledge

Definition of matter

Definition of mass, weight, volume, and density

Difference between mass and weight

Teacher Background
Accessing Prior Knowledge
Ask: What is the difference between mass and weight? Sample answer: Mass is a
measure of the amount of matter in an object; weight is a measure of the pull of
gravity on an object.
Ask: How can you determine the density of an object? Sample answer: Divide its mass
by its volume.
ENGAGE
OPTIONS:
Activities and Discussion

Activity Describe It (15 minutes)

Activity Cookie Lab

Students describe matter based on the physical properties of a cookie. Have the
students record answers through the scientific process on the lab sheet.

DIFFERENTIATED
INSTRUCTION :

ELABORATE
OPTIONS:
Differentiated Instruction
Basic Comparing Properties
Synthesizing Key Topics (25 minutes)

Provide small groups of students each with two objects, such as an eraser and a
marble. Have them observe the physical properties of each object. Then have them use
a Venn Diagram to record how the properties are alike and different. Venn Diagram
support
Review Vocabulary Squares Properties
A card game where the students cut the cards apart along the lines, mix the cards, and
then have students put the vocabulary square back together.
Advanced Mixing It Up
Physical Properties(varied)
Research Most matter can be classified as an element, compound, or mixture. Ask
students to look up the meanings of these terms and give examples of each. Then ask
them to look up the term pure substance and to identify at least one physical property
that can be used to identify a pure substance. Sample answers: density, melting point,
boiling point
Ask: Why can't mixtures be positively identified by any particular physical
property? Sample answer: Composition may vary among samples.
ELL What "Belongs" to an Object?
Synthesizing Key Topics (15 minutes)
Write the word property on the board. Ask volunteers to look up the meaning that best
relates to the lesson. Sample answer: Some trait or characteristic of an object that
defines or describes the object. Display or write the name of a familiar object on the
board and ask students to describe the object. Write the descriptions on the board.
Then use the descriptions to generate a discussion about properties.

LESSON CLOSURE :

EXTEND
OPTIONS:
Choose one or more of the following activities to reinforce the concepts students
learned in this lesson.
Extend Science Concepts

Activity Properties Game(20 minutes)

Synthesizing Key Topics

Card ResponsesAfter completing the lesson, direct students to each make a "True"
and a "False" card. Then conduct an exercise in which you provide short statements
that can be answered with "True" or "False". Ask students to hold up the correct card
for each statement after you read it. For example, the response to the statement "Iron
can rust. This is a physical property." is "False". After posing a number of statements or
questions, allow student volunteers to pose questions for classmates to answer. Use
this strategy as a way to quickly assess which students are still struggling with the
material in the lesson.

Activity Property Charades (30 minutes)

Synthesizing Key Topics

Before class, make a list of physical and chemical properties. Write each property on a

slip of paper and place the slips into a container. Divide the class into small groups and
tell the students that they will perform a charade to illustrate a property of matter. Tell
each group to blindly choose one piece of paper. Allow the groups to plan their charade
for 5 minutes. While one group performs its charade, the groups that are watching try
to guess the property.
