Introduction
We were given an assignment that involves the three modules,
which are Measurement 1, Building Material and Construction
Technology 1 where each of every one of us need to write and submit a
site report.
The construction site visit was held on 23th of November 2016
(Wednesday) at Taman Impian Murni. The construction site is located at
Taman Impian Murni (Lot 3607), Jalan Tanjung Balai (Lorong Haji Yusof)
Seksyen 30, 40460 Shah Alam, Selangor. This project is to construct 42
units of 2 & 3 storey terrace house.
Lecturers have told us the safety precaution which we have to
obey by wearing safety helmet, proper clothing and shoes. We gather at
the site at 8.30 and we were brief by Mr Yong about the current project
and some safety precautions. After that we are separated into 2 groups
and we started the tour in the construction site.
The aim of this site visit is to expose us for a better understanding
about what we had learnt in class such as the construction process,
equipments, building materials and technology on site.
Foundation.
A foundation is the bottom most part of the substructure which transmit
load of the structure along with its own weight into the soil underneath or
surroundings
This construction site has applied strip pilling foundation. Strip pilling
foundation is the combination of strip foundation and pilling. It consists of
a number of piles connected by a ring of concrete called the ground
beam. The strip foundation also act as a ground beam in this case.
Beams
Beam is the horizontal member of a structure, carrying transverse loads.
Beam carry the floor slab or the roof slab. It transfers all the loads into
the columns.
They are two types of beams which are non-suspended beam and
suspended beam. A suspended beam differs from non-suspended beam
because they are suspended above the ground via columns while nonsuspended beam sits directly on the ground.
Non-suspended beam
Suspended beam
Upstand beam
There is also a type of beam called a upstand beam. An upstand beam
is a beam projecting above a concrete floor rather than concealed
beneath it. For this project, the upstand beam is built for the drainage
system.

Isolated column
Starter bar
Column
Column is a vertical structural member that transmits the load from roof
slab and beam, including its self-weight to the foundation.
The second diagram shows a starter bar coming out from the side of the
column. The function of the starter bar is to tie the brickwork to the
column to prevent the brickwork from falling to the front or the back.
Non-suspended slab
Suspended slab
Slab
Concrete slab is a very common and important structural element that is
constructed to provide flat, useful surfaces.
Slab are also can be categories into 2 types which is non-suspended
slab and suspended slab. A non-suspended beam differs from
suspended slab because they sit directly on the ground while a
suspended slab suspended above the ground via beams.
The photo above shows the concrete truck pouring concrete into a
concrete bucket. The concrete bucket is hook to a mobile crane so it can
transfer the concrete easily to the top floor. A slump test will be done to
make sure that the concrete from the factory is workable before pouring
into the formwork.
Blinding
A thin layer of concrete blinding or sand blinding is poured into the
formwork before pouring in the concrete. The purpose of this blinding is
to seal in underlying material and prevent dirt and mud from interfering
with the structure.
Reinforcement bar
Before pouring the concrete into the formwork, layers of vertical and
horizontal of steel bars are placed in the formwork. This is because
rebar is used as a tension devise in reinforced concrete to strengthen
and hold the concrete in tension. The rebar is tied together with
stirrups(in beam) and links(in column) to hold the main rebars together in
an RCC structure.
Concrete covers are tied to the rebars to act as a spacing to prevent the
rebars to expose out from the concrete after curing. The concrete cover
can prevent the rebars from corrosion and provide thermal insulation
during fire.

Conclusion
After the site visit, I realised that working at a construction site is much
more difficult than expected, mainly because of the weather condition
and the danger exists in the site.
This site visit is a very eye opening experience for me and I wish I can
gain more practical knowledge to prepare myself in the future.
