BIG ROOM DRUM HITS

Cr2 Records are very proud to present Big Room
Drum Hits, the 8th production toolkit from their
sample pack label Sample Tools by Cr2.
This pack focusses on one of the cornerstones of
dance music production - the drums.
Its packed with tight and punchy kicks, snares,
cymbals and percussion hits totalling 631
individual hits. These drums can be used across
the board from EDM, Techno, Tech House, Deep
House and Drum and Bass. The high production
values that have been applied mean that these
drums can be used for Big Room larger than life
tracks and pack the necessary punch to underpin
the biggest productions.
Not only that, but bundled with the pack, we
have given you 2 tutorial videos giving you an in
depth look into how these drums were created.
Have you ever wondered how you favourite drum
hits were created? Well the wait is over as we
uncover the secrets behind the sounds. Finally we
have our booklet which is jam packed with
production techniques from the producer.

From the producer....

For this pack we focussed on punchy, crisp big
room drum hits for a variety of electronic genres.
GET A LIBRARY CARD
When looking for snare samples to layer, search
for nice clear punchy transients. Try to develop an
ear for great sounding drum hits and when you
find sounds you like remember to save them in
folders. This makes drum production quicker as
you have your own custom folders of sounds to
use.
HUUUGE SNARE
For a huge snare sound, you need a sample that
punches through the 200HZ area. This can then
be layered with a sound that has a lot of mid
range energy in the range of 400-3000HZ. On
top of this try layering a clap or crash cymbal or a
sound with lots of high frequencies to give you
that really punchy high frequency sheen to the
sample. Use EQ to isolate these frequencies so
that each sound works in its own range.
PLAY WITH PERCUSSION
For percussion sounds, start off by setting your
envelope with a fast attack and fast decay. Then
by combining different waveforms and
modulation, you can create a whole variety of
different percussive sounds.

SOFT CLIPPER
Use soft clipping to drive your snare sounds.
Plugins such as Izotope Ozone have a built in soft
clipper. This really adds punch and grit to the
sound.
MULTIBAND
Trying using a multiband transient shaper such as
Izotope's Alloy or Waves Trans-Multi to focus on
bringing out a certain frequency in the kick or
snare.
FM SYNTHESIS
Try using FM synthesis to create percussive hits
and cymbals. FM is great for creating metallic
sounds which make it a great choice for
synthesising cymbal sounds. For percussive
sounds, try routing a fast decay envelope to
amount of FM modulation to create that transient
snap.
SHAPERS & COMPRESSION
Use transient shapers and parallel compression.
Transient shapers can be amazing at bringing out
the attack of a kick or snare or boosting the decay
of a sample and therefore boosting the tail.
Parallel compression allows you to bring more out
of the kick or snare whilst maintaing the character
of the original sound.

From the producer....

OVERDRIVE!
For snares, use overdrive, saturation distortion
and more overdrive, saturation and distortion!
One of the tools the pros are using is saturation,
overdrive and distortion. Think of EQ as bringing
in or out frequencies that are in your sound and
distortion effects as adding extra harmonics that
weren't originally present.
200HZ PUNCH HURTS
For mainroom and Dubstep style snares, try
layering a 909 snare sample for the 200HZ punch.
I LIKE SYNTHESISERS
Synthesisers can be used to make snare sounds.
In the video, you will see that by generating a
200HZ woody hit, then a metallic, noisy transient
and blending these with a white noise style decay
you can make your own customisable snare
drums. On top of this you can even tune the
200HZ woody hit to be hitting the root of your
scale or maybe tune it to a fifth. This gives you
great control.
DONT MISS THE BUS
When layering samples, bus the sounds together
and use compression, EQ and distortion to help
unify the layers into one sound.

AVOID THE MUSH

For the big room distorted kick tail, make a kick
tail using a plugin like Nicky Romero Kick or
similar, bounce it down and add a combination of
filtering, EQ and distortion to bring out lots of
harmonics without the sound becoming mush!
Combine this with a nice clean punchy kick
transient to create this style of kick. The tail of the
kick should be at the root note of your scale so it
becomes a drone that the melody can sit on.
SINCH SYNTH SINE WAVE
Any synth can be used to create custom kicks.
Take a sine wave and route an envelope with a
fast decay to the pitch of that sine wave. Play with
the decay time to generate a wide variety of
custom kick drum sounds.
PUNCH, KICK, CRASH & SCREAM
To add more punch to a kick, you can add a ride
or crash cymbal on the top. This will help your ear
find the kick in the mix.

We really hope you find the pack and the

information in this booklet useful. Welcome to
Sample Tools by Cr2!
