Health Tourism
Health Tourism is a fast developing sector in a number of developed and developing
nations. Health Tourism or Medical Tourism is a system that can provide nations with some
leverage to pay for their health bills. These sectors could earn some revenue for their much needed
budget. The number of foreigners seeking treatment in Malaysia has increased tremendously in the
past few years. The revenue generated from these patients has also significantly increased. Most of
the patients are from developed nations like the USA. Overall, Malaysia has very good hospitals
and very skilled doctors and low cost healthcare packages. In the developed nations like the United
Kingdom where there are very good healthcare facilities but they are so expensive that a lot of
their own indigenous people cannot avail them. Competitive medical fees and modern medical
facilities are two vital factors that make Malaysia a popular destination among health Tourists.
Patients can undergo treatment and recuperate in any part of the country for much less than what if
would cost them for a treatment in the UK. For example, a normal cardiac bypass surgery in
Malaysia would cost around US9, 000 whereas in the UK, it would cost six times the amount.
Malaysias success in establishing itself as a regional hub for excellent healthcare, capable of
providing stateofthepart medical facilities and services for health tourists is because of
government supervision and control.
The National Committee for the promotion of Health Tourism was set up in 1998. In the
UK, there is very limited government control and the private sector undertakes all the promotional
activities. In a nutshell, we can say that Malaysia is a better tourism destination compared with the
U.K. because we have comparable and competitive facilities such as a safe and politically stable
country, competitive and affordable pricing and favorable exchange rate, highly qualified,
experienced and skilled comoulitants, English speaking medical staff, state of the Art technology,
multi-cultural and multi religious medical staff and other positive factors. The most important
factor favorable to Malaysia compared with the developed world like the U.K. is its cost of living
and its exchange rate which is very low compared with their currencies. Thus the health tourism
sector is fast becoming a preferred method of seeking solutions for expensive medical treatment
options for people who are not able to pay for unavoidable healthcare. Malaysia is certainly the
best and the most favorable destination in view of, why people choose medical tourism.

2.0 Reason to promote Malaysia as a Tourist or Medical Tourism.

2.1 The best and the most favorable destination
Malaysia is certainly the best and the most favorable destination in view of, why people
choose medical tourism. Affordable costs for procedures, abundance of choices for tourism and
accommodation. Excellent English speaking medical staff, top class international hospitals with
careful and strict accreditation system and a very loving general population of Malaysia. Medical
tourism is carefully governed and watched by government to safeguard the rights of patients and
tourists.

2.2 Medical costs and hospitalization charges

Medical costs and hospitalization charges in Malaysia are very competitive compared to
those in many developed countries. Malaysian medical expertise is also ranked among the best in
the world. For example, a normal cardiac bypass surgery would cost USD 6,000 USD 7,000. The
favorable exchange rate of USD 1.00 to RM 3.80 contributes furthers to make Malaysia an
affordable destination. The number of foreigners seeking healthcare services in Malaysia has
grown from 75, 210 patients in years 2001 to 296, 687 patients in year 2007 which generated a
total of RM203.6 million in 2006. From January to March 2007, Malaysia received 77, 009
medical tourists. The number of foreign patients at private hospitals shot up to 341, 288 last year,
from 296, 687 in 2006 and 232, and 161 in 2005. The hospitals also reported a corresponding
increase in revenue from this sector: RM 253.84 million in 2007 compared with RM 203.6 million
in 2006 and RM 150.9 million in year 2005. Almost 809 increase in 3 years. By year 2010, it is
expected that a total RM 584 million in medical revenue will be generated.
One can find every good services, top class infrastructure, excellent hospitals, and highly
skilled healthcare providers, but still the costs are relatively cheaper than other local and
international healthcare providers. Overall Malaysia costs are 1/3 cheaper than USA and UK costs
of medical procedures. Cost competitiveness is one of the most important factors in medical
tourism. Malaysia has an added advantage of being cost competitive and with highly skilled
healthcare providers, which makes it a top destination in health tourism.

2.3 Excellent medical staff

Another promising factor is Malaysias medical staff. Malaysia is blessed with some
excellent doctors, who are ranked among the best in the world in their particular fields of
specializations. Malaysia doctors are sent to the USA, UK and Australia for further specialist
training and exposure. One of the most promising aspects of medical tourism facilities in Malaysia
is its healthcare facilities. Malaysia has about 400 plus government and 200 plus private sectors
hospitals. Private sector has taken care of medical tourism sector and they are doing it very well.

2.4 Accommodation and hotels

Accommodation and hotels in Malaysia are another very good reason for medical tourism
promotion in this country. Malaysia has very expensive network of all categories of hotels and
motels. All big international chains of hotels are available in Malaysia. All at affordable prices and
competitive in terms of service and cost, Malaysia is enriched with variety of these
accommodation places, ranging from personalized residences at beautiful lush green terrains to
exquisite chalets at the seaside. Hotels in the cities are packed with features of style and living. All
at affordable prices, a sound reason for patients and tourists travelling for medical tourism, to
chose Malaysia as the choice destination.

2.5 Raise the standard of healthcare facilities

Thus the main reason for promoting health tourism are to generate revenue for the country,
raise the standard of healthcare facilities both in the private and government sectors, raise
science and technological advances in the medical and health fields and stimulating local
businesses like setting up new accommodation or hotels or motels, and other tourist related
facilities which can generate revenue to local businessmen.

3.1 The Malaysia perspective

Malaysia has become a top destination for medical and Health Tourism. There are many
advantages in choosing Malaysia for health and medical requirements. Medical Tourism in
Malaysia is fast growing into a big industry. The numbers and figures speak very clearly about its
success. There is a very good increase in the medical tourism, health tourism, related patients and
tourists. Overall, Malaysia has a lot to offer to its medical tourism patients. Malaysia has a wide
choice of state of the Art Medical Centers. These establishments are well-equipped and staffed to
serve the healthcare needs of people from all over the world. Medical specialists in the country are
highly qualified professionals. Malaysia is certainly the best and most favorable destination
because medical tourism quests have unending choices to make which puts Malaysia as the top
destination in medical tourism.

3.2 The United Kingdom perspective

Overall the entire developed world, where there are good hospitals and very skilled doctors
but they are very expensive. Like the USA and Australia, the health tourism sector in the UK has
developed into a sophisticated medical and health hub. But the cost of healthcare facilities and
surgeries are very high and expensive in the UK. The cost of heart bypass, heart valve
replacement, Angio plasty and other surgeries or procedures are there or four times more expensive
in the UK than in Malaysia. In the UK, the private sector plays an important role in the
development of the health or medical tourism sector.

3.3 Comparing Malaysia and United Kingdom

SAROJINI A/P GOPALOO

Overall, Malaysia has all the hop-notch facilities like the UK. Like the UK, Malaysia has
very good hospitals, skilled doctors, good accommodation, hotels and motels, a very good English
speaking medical staff, top class international airports and excellent roads and intra structure
services for tourists and other excellent tourist destination.
Everything is comparable to the facilities in the UK. But in Malaysia, the cost of living is
low compared to UK. Thus the cost of the medical facilities or treatments or procedures is 1/3 of
that in the UK. Furthermore the exchange of the UKs pound to Malaysia ringgit is about 1.00 to
RM 6.00. Thus Malaysia has a very favorable exchange rate. Thus the medical treatments and
other related facilities are very cheap and low compared with the UK. Malaysia has a multireligion, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural population. The medical staff could treat any medical
tourists or health tourist from any religious, cultural or ethnic background. In the UK, the medical
staff is only from the English background. Thus people from other religious, cultural or ethnic
background would find it uncomfortable to get treatment in the UK compared to Malaysia. The
truth and irony is that people from the UK are increasingly coming to Malaysia for treatment and
as well as normal tourists.

formulated various policies and guidelines to make Malaysia one of the most desired destinations
for health or medical tourism.

of Malaysia. These people practice Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity. These people also
have multi-cultural norms of life. Each racial group has their own cuisines and dishes.

SAROJINI A/P GOPALOO

791006-05-5322

Overall, the weather climate in Malaysia is not extreme compared to other countries. There is
sunshine and intermittent rain fall throughout the year. Thus tourists can enjoy visiting the various
parts of the country without any worries about the weather. Most of the above stated fasts are
considered the advantages of Malaysia becoming the best and favorable destination for health or
medical tourism.

5.0 Conclusion
Medical tourism isnt just about getting more reasonable priced medical care, it is also a
trend, a culture that people travel to find a place where there is more natural beauty and better
option for wellness, recuperatin and recovery.
Thus, Malaysia is in a better position to provide a relaxing and tranquil place to have
recovery and healing fast. Malaysia has excellent beaches and tropical forests and jungle.

patients, ranging for wide variety of tourism choices, excellent hospitals with the state of the Art
medical technologies and facilities, top class international airports, excellent roads and
infrastructure services for tourists, a widely English speaking community and excellent hotels and

In a nutshell, Malaysia has many advantages to be better choices than the United Kingdom
in the medical or health tourism. Although the UK has all the excellent facilities like Malaysia,
their exchange rate is not favorable to them. The healthcare facilities in the UK are very expensive
and their own people cannot afford them. The health or medical treatment in Malaysia is only 1/3
of that in the UK.
Another factor is the climate. The weather in UK is extreme with winter, summer, spring
and autumn. But in Malaysia, there is always sunshine and occasional rainfall. Malaysian weather
is suitable for tourists to visit May part of the country, anytime of the year. In the UK, you can only
visit certain months of the year. Asian is not used to extreme weather like the UK. Even the
Europeans Flock to the Far East during winter or other period of the year.

cheaper rate.
Another factor that contributes to making Malaysia centre of medical excellence in the
region is that Malaysia is a politically stable and safe country. Like the UK, Malaysia has all the
top-notch facilities but Malaysias advantage is that its favorable exchange rate, climate, beautiful
beaches and jungle, multi-religious and multi-racial people, stable government and excellent
communication system. Overall, Malaysia is a better choice than the UK in the medical or health
