GENERAL
Wi-MAX
INFORMATIO
What is Wi-MAX?
Worldwide Interoperability
for Microwave Access
(WiMAX).

WiMAX is an IP based, wireless

broadband access technology that
provides performance similar to
802.11/Wi-Fi networks with the
PURPOSE
is to ensure that the
broadband wireless
radios manufactured for
customer use
interoperate from
vendor to vendor
ADVANTAGE
Primary advantages of the
WiMAX standard are to
enable the adoption of
advanced radio features in
a uniform fashion and
reduce costs for all of the
radios made by companies,
who are part of the WiMAX
WHY IS WI-MAX
NEEDED?
Early broadband wireless systems
began as extensions of indoor
local area network (LAN)
technology known as
Wi-Fi or the 802.11b protocol
WI-FI best performance in
small venues and at short
range ONLY.

What is the range of
WIMAX?
WiMAX multipoint coverage
extending 30 miles (in strict
technical sense)
In practice the average cell
ranges for most WiMAX
networks will likely boast 4-5
mile range (in NLOS capable
frequencies) even through
tree cover and building walls.

of RF transmissions
How busy the RF environment of a city or town is can
greatly degrade signals
The climate can affect radio performance
What is non line of
sight (NLOS)? Does
WiMAX possess NLOS
capability?
Wi-MAX does possess NLOS
capabilities, although how
much and to what extent will
vary depending on the
spectrum bands being used
NLOS Non Line
Indicatesof
thatSight
the signal from
a radio is received by either
passing through impeding
objects, such as tree tops,
walls or even in some cases
buildings or is received as a
reflection from another
building, body of water or land
feature.
OFDM
modulation
The first iteration of Wi-
MAX actually takes
advantage of reflected
signals allowing radios to
integrate multiple reflected
signals to improve signal
strength and accuracy.
Wi-MAX NLOS
In general NLOS
ranges in the 2.5 GHz
band and 3.5 GHz
Internationally will
mostly fall between 6-
8 Kilometers (4-5
Miles).
What is the
actual data
transfer rate of
WiMAX
Technology?
Theoretical
Maximums could
support approximately
75 Mbps per channel
(in a 20 MHz channel
using 64QAM code
rate
REAL WORLD
PERFORMANCE
Around 45
Mbps/channel in

A Wi-MAX system consists
of two parts
1. A Wi-MAX tower, similar in
concept to a cell-phone tower - A
single Wi-MAX tower can provide
coverage to a very large area -- as big
as 3,000 square miles (~8,000 square
km).
2. A Wi-MAX receiver - The receiver
and antenna could be a small box or
PCMCIA card, or they could be built
into a laptop the way Wi-Fi access is
WiMAX 2 forms of wireless
service:

1.LINE OF
SIGHT

2.NON- LINE OF
SIGHT
LINE OF SIGHT
a fixed dish antenna points
straight at
the Wi-MAX tower from a
rooftop or pole
The line-of-sight connection is
stronger and more stable, so it's
able to send a lot of data with
fewer errors
Line-of-sight transmissions use
NON-LINE OF SIGHT
Wi-Fi sort of service, where a small
antenna on your computer connects to
the tower
Wi-MAX uses a lower frequency range 2
GHz to 11 GHz (similar to Wi-Fi).
Lower-wavelength transmissions are
not as easily disrupted by physical
obstructions
