Standards:
English language learners communicate for social and instructional purposes within the
school setting.
Materials:
White or colored copy paper
Copy machine or printer
Envelope
Marker
Card stock/construction paper if available
Pencils
Objective:
Families will attend Literacy Night to learn how to encourage and support literacy in
their homes on a daily basis.
Families will make take-home literacy activities to bolster literacy skills at home.
Procedure:
Print the Sign-in Sheet for Literacy Night. The Sign-in Sheet can be found in the
Additional Resources on pages 107-108.
Print the Parent Questionnaire/Survey for the end of the event. The Parent
Questionnaire/Survey can be found in the Additional Resources on pages 109.

Procedure Continued:
Print out the Rhyme Time Dominos cards. Each family should get two pages of
Dominos Cards.
o Print on card stock or construction paper for durability.
Print out family directions in both English and Spanish. Use colored copy paper
if available.
Print the Spanish/English Family Directions for families to take home with the
game.
Model how to make and play game:
o Demonstrate how families should cut out the rhyming domino cards.
o Explain that the domino cards get shuffled and split equally between both
players.
o Model how players take turns to make perpendicular rhyming matches
with the dominoes.
o The object of the game is to try to make as many rhyming word matches
as possible with the rhyming dominoes.
o The first player who uses all of their rhyming word dominoes correctly is
the winner.
Provide families with an envelope to keep the word dominos in.
o Label Envelops Rhyme Time Dominos.
Ask parents to complete the Parent Questionnaire/Survey at the end of the
Literacy Night event.

Maintain a Parent Sign-In sheet for your records.
Give the Parent Exit Survey and reflect on the parent feedback.

Cut out the domino rhyming word cards.
To Play:
o Shuffle cards and divide between two players.
o Player one begins by setting down a card.
o Take turns matching rhyming words together, going
up and down or left to right.
Place your rhyming dominoes in your
envelope.
Take home, play, and enjoy!
