Lessons 14: Literacy Night Word Family Sort

Materials:
White or colored copy paper
Copy machine or printer
Envelope
Marker
Pencils

Objective:
Families will attend Literacy Night to learn how to encourage and support literacy in
their homes on a daily basis.
Families will make take-home literacy activities to bolster literacy skills at home.

Procedure:

Print the Sign-in Sheet for Literacy Night. The Sign-in Sheet can be found in the
Additional Resources on pages 107-108.
Print the Parent Questionnaire/Survey for the end of the event. The Parent
Questionnaire/Survey can be found in the Additional Resources on page 109.

Procedure Continued:

Print out the word family sort mats, one of each mat for each family.
Print out the word family word cards, one sheet of word cards for each family.
Provide each family with an envelope for their word cards.
Print the game directions in English/Spanish and provide for families.
Model how to prepare and play the game:
o Each family will need one of each word family circles mats.
o Show families how to cut out the words for sorting.
o The object of the game is to sort each word into the correct word family
circle and say the word.
o Extension: find other possibilities for sorting, such as animals.
o Place the word cards in an envelope labeled Word Family Sort.
Ask parents to complete the Parent Questionnaire/Survey at the end of the
Literacy Night event.

Assessment:
Maintain a Parent Sign-In sheet for your records.
Give the Parent Exit Survey and reflect on the parent feedback.

English/Spanish communication with parents through the materials and flier.


Parent friendly language is used to explain how to use literacy games in the
home.

o Place each word in the circle with the
word family ending that it belongs to and
say the word.
Take home, play, & enjoy!
