Application of Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

Shell and heat exchanger is involved in many applications such as petrochemical

industry, oil and gas and other related fields. Presently, a shell and finned tube heat exchanger
with an integrated current (IC) with an engine setup is used to extract heat from the exhaust gas
and a thermal energy storage tank to store the excess energy available is examined in detail. For
thermal energy storage using cylindrical phase change material (PCM) capsules , a combined
sensible and latent heat storage is planned. This paper evaluates the performance parameters
pertaining to heat exchanger and storage tank such as amount of heat recovered , heat loss,
charging rate , charging efficiency and percentage energy saved.
Next, this application is a way of fuel combustion or chemical reaction that released
waste heat to be reused for something beneficial and economic reasons. The application is valid
depending on the temperature level of exhaust stream. For different temperatures , heat pipes and
combustion equipment can be employed to assist the procedure of the recovered heat. Gases
have lower heat transfer coefficient than water , oil and other liquids. Functions of the tube
surface geometry , the flow pattern and tube Reynolds number can be observed and taken with
the following parameters such as the exchanger heat duty , overall heat transfer coefficient,
effectiveness and tube side friction factor, Chinna , Malan, Pandiyarajan , Seeniraj & Velraj
(2010)
Waste heat recovery system had been experimented for an internal combustion engine
exhaust gas and coolant using two different liquids operating at different pressure and
temperature in two separate circuit path. A lot of figurative samples and various terminologies
regarding the energy and exergy analysis of sensible heat storage. Many research and experiment
has been done on the objective stated above . In cold winter time, heat storage system for pre
heating a petrol engine operated under real condition had experimentally studied and calculated.
Besides that, advantages of combined sensible heat storage system mentioned and experiment on
waste heat recovery from diesel engine exhaust had done.
Selection of heat exchanger and storage tank configuration in the present work a finned
shell and tube heat exchanger is selected to extract heat from the exhaust gas and a separate
storage tank filled with oil and PCM encapsulated containers to store the heat. Briefly the surface
convective heat transfer coefficient for gases will be very low and hence heat transfer surface on
the gas side needs to have a much larger area for better heat transfer, Chinna , Malan,
Pandiyarajan , Seeniraj & Velraj (2010) The primary purpose is that a shell separator and tube
heat exchanger is chosen for heat recovery. The solidified PCM on convective heat transfer
surface acts insulator. Moreover , the thickness of the solidified layer increases with respect to
time the resistance for heat transfer between HTF and liquid PCM in the storage tank increases.

Many attempts of studies have been made to recover the maximum possible heat from the
exhaust gas through a finned shell and tube heat exchanger plus to store it in a TES tank filled
with cylindrical PCM capsules. The performance is evaluated by analyzing the heat loss
coefficient of the TEC tank , temperature distribution inside the TES percentage energy saved at
various parameters. There is no stratification found and a near uniform temperature is observed
throughout the TES tank Chinna , Malan, Pandiyarajan , Seeniraj & Velraj (2010) . Due to the
presence of stainless steel containers and high conductivity storage wall. In conjunction with that
both the charging rate and charging efficiency are very high at higher load and the respective
parameters decreased with respect to load.
As a conclusion, the diesel engine exhaust gas can be improved by using HRHE.
Nevertheless, main technical constraint that restricts successful implementation of such as
system is intermittent and time mismatched demand and availability of energy. Through this
research , a finned shell and tube heat exchanger and a PCM based tank were modeled and
invented by integrating with a diesel engine of capacity.
