Lately I have been seeing tweets of some on twitter how they were once again motivated
to pursue medicine when they touched a human brain during BIOSCI 3 Lab, and a dead body
during their cadaver visit. It was not only the actual brain they were touching, but all memories
of the person who once owned that brain that persons whole past life on their hands. I think
every student in the faculty has a dream to enter med school and one day become surgeons.
Some are just not sure if they are called to it. Watching Greys Anatomy makes me one to want to
become a doctor, like any other pre-med students. And like those some other students, I am also
not sure if I am called to be one.
It was the first time I touched a dead human. Its skin were already stiff. I tried to open its
eyelids, but of course, it didnt. I was also able to hold his heart the ventricles, the aorta, and
the pulmonary artery and veins. I think I held three hearts. One of them was darkly colored, said
it was still full of blood. The laboratory technician showed us another cadaver a female one. I
could say that she was overweight. Her fat was about an inch thick. I did not expect that adipose
would look that under your skin. It actually made me grateful I lost weight. The last cadaver was
so thin and he has a tattoo on his abdomen.
During that time, I was thinking how their lives were when they were still alive and why
did they end up in a dissection hall. All of them died in a vehicular accident not so long ago, the
female one is in the hall for just two months. I was wondering where their families are and
whether they even know theyre here. The technician said that there was also one there just the
same our age. Why werent they claimed?
The visit did not actually pushed my drive for med school. Something else is pushing me
to stick in the pharmacy profession. It was cool but I do not know how to feel. Its just sad that
they just ended up like this and it seems like they did not have anyone with them when they were
still alive. Though, I understand that some families actually donate them for medicines sake. At
least even if they already dead, they still have a purpose in the world to help educate medical
students. I think I learned that we should all need to value our lives because we dont know how
will it be when everything is over.
