RESIDENT PROFILE

Cheryl and Bill McLaughlin

Hi there! My name is Joslyn McLaughlin and I am excited to introduce my parents,
Bill and Cheryl McLaughlin. Bills mother has lived in Surprise for 37 years so my
parents have become familiar with that general area. In the last few years they
began exploring various active adult communities and have rented in Festival for
a couple years. They have really gotten to know the community and many residents. In reviewing their options, they chose to build a home in Sun City Festival
and moved with their English Bulldog, Joey, primarily because of all the great
people. My parents continue to emphasize that its all about the people and that
you wont find a greater group of people in any other community. Of course, the
sunshine, pickleball, golf and the Sage Recreation Center also made the decision
to live in Festival a very easy choice. My dad sums up living in Festival as, like
being back in grade school and the whole day is recess.
Cheryl and Bill are heavily involved in all types of sports and if you hear screaming
from their home during football season, dont worry, its just Bill trying to coach
the Oregon Ducks and they have needed alot of help with their coaching this year.
During their 33 years of marriage, they have lived in many parts of the country
due to my dads career in the insurance and financial services industry. Some of
these places included Portland, Eugene, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Minneapolis,
and Pacific City, Oregon.
You might say that my parents are risk takers, especially my dad. Theyve done
everything including kayaking resulting in an incident on the Pacific Ocean. We still thank the Coast Guard for their timely
intervention. They also took two trips to Egypt in the last two years. In addition to these travels, they have been all over the
world and arent finished, unless dad has his passport revoked for instigating an international incident. Bill is like a cat, but
he has more than nine lives.
My parents are blessed with two wonderful, loving, beautiful (I could go on...) daughters and one perfect grandson. Were all
very excited to visit your wonderful community this December and take a break from Oregons winter gloom.

What You Dont Know

About Fat

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C..

Fitness/Wellness Director

Fat, a simple three-letter word, is something which can have a significant impact on
our physical and mental well-being. We work to keep fat off our bodies. We strive to
avoid consuming too much fat. Actually, having fat in our bodies is critical for optimal function. Too much fat, especially certain types, can create health problems.
We need fat for multiple reasons. Fat acts as fuel for all of our life processes including body cell growth, nutrient absorption (think of fat-soluble vitamins, and hormone
production). We also use fat as fuel for movement. In addition, stored fat helps to
protect internal organs and to keep the body warm (insulation).
According to Shawn Talbott, Ph.D., a nutritional biochemist, we have different types
of fat, white and brown. Each type of fat has a different function.
White fat makes up more than 90 percent of the fat in the body.
This type of fat has a low metabolic rate (burns very few calories).
Most believe the white fat is basically useless and serves mostly
as storage for extra calories.
Brown fat, darker in color due to greater blood supply, can
actually burn calories. Certain mammals use brown fat to
provide fuel and create body heat in times of cold. Humans have
small amounts of brown fat and, unfortunately, are unable to get
any metabolic boost and body heat from it.
Location of fat on the body is also important. Belly fat, sometimes
called visceral fat, can create health issues not seen from fat
stored in other parts of the body (thighs, arms, etc). Visceral fat is
very sensitive to the stress hormone cortisol and tends to be the storage of choice
in times of stress. Also, visceral fat, on its own, releases inflammatory chemicals
which travel to the brain creating feelings of fatigue and hunger that leads to overeating and sedentary behavior. This vicious cycle leads to storage, more belly fat
and more inflammatory chemicals. Anything that fights inflammation, omega 3 fats,
yogurt with active cultures, and other foods, help reduce the brain signals from the
belly fat.
We can also measure the amount of fat on or in the body. Body fat percentage
(percentage of weight that is fat vs. muscle, bone etc) is a good measurement of
how much fat is in the body. A mans body fat percentage should be around 20 and
a womans body fat percentage should be around 29.
Creating a calorie deficit is the best way to get rid of fat. The notion of fat burning
exercise as a specific type of exercise is inaccurate. Simply burning more calories
by working longer and/or harder during exercise and by consuming fewer calories
(especially high quality calories and caloric ratios) is truly the answer to fat loss.
Fat, as we see, has an affect on mood and health. Creating caloric deficit and consuming foods with anti-inflammatory properties can minimize fat storage and reduce
the amount of fat already stored in the body.
