Common Core Highlights

Below are some of the common core math standards for each grade level. This
might be a place you want to start thinking about how to incorporate math into
your everyday classroom. Keep in mind these are really shortened versions of
the standards, but it is a quick reference guide.

Grade 6

Solve unit rate problems

ex. If it took 7 hours to
mow 4 lawns, then at that
rate, how many lawns
could be mowed in 35
hours?
Find a percent of a
quantity as a rate per 100
ex.30% of a quantity
means 30/100 times the
quantity (Solve problems
involving finding the
whole, given a part and the
percent)

Divide fractions by
fractions

Add, Subtract, Multiply,

and Divide multi-digit
decimals

Represent and analyze

relationships between

The other main objective that might be new to some of you in math is that
students must be able to explain their thinking. Anytime you promote students
to explain their answer, also helps them to be able to articulate their thinking in
math.
Grade 7

Identify the constant of

proportionally (unit rate) in
tables, graphs, equations,
diagrams, and verbal
descriptions

Write those relationships in

equations

Use proportions to solve

problems like interest, tax,
markups, and markdowns,
gratuities and commissions,
fees, percent increate and
decrease, percent error

Solve real-world problems

involving rational numbers

Solve problems involving

scale drawings of geometric
figures

Use measures of center and

measures for numerical data

If you are struggling to find one of

the common core standards that fit
your lessons, below are the
mathematical practice standards
that all math classes are working
toward.

Persevere

I can make sense of problems and persevere in

solving them by planning and checking my
progress with diferent strategies.

Represent

I can analyze and represent problems

mathematically using symbols, words, pictures, and
expressions.

EXPLAIN

I can explain my strategy using symbols, words and

pictures and I can compare my strategy with
others.

MODEL

I can apply what I know about math to different

problems and I can show my work in many
diferent ways.

Tools
accurate
structure

I can choose appropriate tools and use them

efectively to solve problems.
I can accurately and precisely calculate, label and
specify unit of measure when solving problems. I
work carefully and check my work.

I can find patterns and use prior knowledge to

solve new problems.

REPEATEDREASONING I can use patterns, properties, and structures to

create and explain rules and shortcuts when
solving problems.
