It is my privilege to recommend Ms. Jillian Schulte for the position of Principal at Western Hills Elementary School. I have had the opportunity to get to know Jillian as an adult learner this summer in a class I am teaching at Drake University, and in this relatively short period of time, I have been witness to an instructional leader who could seamlessly transition to the role of a principal if given the opportunity. First and foremost, Jillian is passionate about learning. While student learning is her priority, she possesses a strong understanding of her role in developing capacity of the adult learners with whom she works in order to impact student growth. She is vulnerable and reflective, and she consistently maintains a positive demeanor. She models a growth mindset for all learners, and she articulates the importance of providing ongoing descriptive feedback and coaching as an instructional leader. It is important to note Jillians ability to quickly adapt to new situations. During this current class, Jillian entered a pre-existing cohort. While it would have been expected for her to be uncomfortable or nervous entering a group where relationships had been previously established, she handled herself with grace and the utmost professionalism. I observed her new peers quickly connecting with her, and she carefully and positively engaged in discussions, asked thought-provoking questions, offered reflective thinking, and provided gentle pressure to push the thinking of others. Simply put, they respect her as a learner and a leader, and she has made them better as a result of her contributions. I have no doubt Jillian would demonstrate this same approach while transitioning as a principal in West Des Moines. If given the opportunity to serve as your principal, Jillian will require a conditional license to serve in this capacity while she finishes her coursework. As someone who has been involved in hiring administrators over the years, I confidently offer this consideration: While Jillian will not bring you current administrative experience, she will bring you the skills, passion, and results-oriented approach to serve as an instructional leader in your district. If given the opportunity, she will prove to be an investment of talent for your students, staff, parents, and community. Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information. I welcome the opportunity to advocate on Jillians behalf for the betterment of your district. Sincerely,
Dr. Jill Urich
